Sunset Overdrive looks nice, love the art style. Forza 5 looks great as always.

Dead Rising 3 an exclusive so is killer instinct, DR3 could be a launch game, Forza 5 did look awesome

Post by: harv on June 10, 2013, 06:47:34 PM
Crimson Dragon looks like shite, looks no better than a 360 game. :-\

Dead Rising 3 looks pretty good but would benefit from a more realistic art style imo now that there's more power under the hood to make it possible. Weapon customisation is pretty cool. 8)

Witcher 3 sounds pretty cool, looks fantastic too. Definitely the most interesting game for me so far.

Frostbite 3 lighting and environmental effects are very impressive but no depth of field which is pretty disappointing. The weapon and water splashing on screen should be out of focus unless reloading. Still, looks great.

Told you it would be over £400, 20 quid cheaper than I thought it would be though, we normally end up paying £50 less than the dollar value.
Title: Re: E3 2013
Post by: jman on June 10, 2013, 07:09:13 PM
Well I won't be paying anymore than £400 thanks to zavvi preorder, I thought the games were pretty decent, DR3, Forza 5, BF4, MGS, KI, Halo and Titanfall looked amazing
Title: Re: E3 2013

I still can't see it being a success though, that 24 hour check-in and DRM bollocks is going to be a major problem for many people.

Also from 1st July, all gold members are getting 2 free games to download and keep each month, sounded great until you saw the first two - AC2 and Halo3 lol

Quantum Break looked fantastic too, certainly can't fault the games shown

If they're going big in the first month (a sensible course of action) and could only come up with halo 3 and ac2 the signs aren't too promising tbh.

Battlefield 4 looks great, loved the building coming down. And a sequel to Mirror's Edge too. A better conference this year, going to be interestingto see if Ubisoft are going to steal the show again, they 'won' E3 by a country mile last year.

Fucking hell, Ubisoft's The Crew pisses all over every other driving game we've seen so far. :o An open world driving game set in the US that's actually the size of the US. Unless I've misunderstood you can drive absolutely anywhere you want to :o

Another good show from Ubisoft. The Crew, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed 4, Rayman Legends, Splinter Cell and The Division all looking great. The interactive Rabbids telly programme looked pretty cool too. ;D

Sony just annihilated Microsoft... Support for used games? Check. No daily authentication needed? Check. Cheaper than the Xbox One? Check. £349 is a great price.

20 PS4 titles coming from Sony, 12 new IPs.

The Order looks very cool. ;D 8)

Killzone 4 looks average.

Driveclub looks good.

Infamous looks cool.

Knack looks meh.

Quantic Dream tech demo is very very cool lol. ;D

Transistor looks cool, going to see plenty of indie games here. Woo hoo!!! Remake of the first Oddworld game!!! 8)

Final Fantasy looks bloody gorgeous, Kingdom Hearts 3 too.

Assassin's Creed 4 doesn't look too impressive visually :-\

Watch Dogs looks gorgeous and very cool.

NBA 2K14 looks a bit pants.

Elder Scrolls Online looks good but not as pretty as I was expecting. Beta exclusive to PS4 first.

Ooh!!! A Mad Max game!!!!! :o Awesome!!!

Lol, PS4 supports used games (applause lol), lending games, renting games, don't need to be connected online to play, don't need 24 hour authentication lol ;D ;D ;D

Free online continuing, as is PlayStation Plus.

Bungie's Destiny looks gorgeous and very cool. ;D

Meh...cloud bollocks. ::) Not available until 2014 lol.

Shit. That's Microsoft fucked. $399.99, £349 :o That's a real surprise, didn't think they would have been able to go below $400...guess that money from the shares and office buildings sold recently has enabled them to go below $400.

It's essential that Nintendo cut the price by $50 at least now.

I think they missed a trick with the Gaikai cloud-gaming announcement. More talk about possible backwards compatibility would have drawn applause. Surely it shouldn't be too difficult to make a massive library of previous games available?

Great round up, Kieron. Thanks - will have a look over those links when I have some time.

At the moment I'm very much leaning toward the ps4 rather than the xb1 (out of those two options - but I still have my eye on steambox).
Xbox has some great features and exclusives, but it's got a lot of negatives - and I ain't enamoured at the proposition of paying £430 for a console with that many negatives when it's rival is slightly more powerful and costs eighty quid less. Of course there's other considerations, that I'll consider more fully when I'm making my purchase - such as games catalogue, non-gaming features, and console reliability. But eighty quid's eighty quid...

I've always said I don't anticipate buying a machine at launch, and will probably wait until next summer, so I'm not saying for certain that I'll be getting a ps4. There's a lot can happen in the next twelve months. But that's the way the wind's blowing at the moment...
Title: Re: E3 2013
Post by: jman on June 11, 2013, 12:33:34 PM
Well lets face it, Microsoft have fucked up in several aspects here.. the machine sounds great.. the games look awesome.. but the price is too high and its policies are baloney... the PS4 will be the run-away leader of next-gen - no doubt.

I'm really undecided that I'm toying with buying both - I don't want to miss out on the xbox games I know and love.. plus the exclusives sound far better to me... but on the same hand I don't want to put up with shitty policies when I don't have to.

You can't get both. The xbox will go fuckin' mental!

Good news, Wii U fans. You're getting some revamped Pokemon and Mario games. But you might have to wait until next year.
Way to blow everyone's socks off, Ninty.

Their E3 Nintendo Direct was a complete clusterfuck. It was unwatchable, buffering all over the place and what little I did see was disappointing. I'm watching it again now as I post. Graphically Mario Kart 8 is streets ahead of the 3D Mario game, and the 3D Mario game is surprisingly disappointing.

Basically Nintendo and Microsoft have handed this gen to the PS4.
Title: Re: E3 2013
Post by: harv on June 11, 2013, 05:08:56 PM
Have just watched the parts that I missed due to the shite stream. The only 'next gen' looking games were Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong, X and Bayonetta 2. I was really expecting more from 3D Mario and less from Mario Kart 8...am really surprised.

I'm hoping this is their Pre-E3 Nintendo Direct and we'll see more in the next few days, particularly fromthird parties for next year. Very disappointing. :'(

I thought the PS4 reveal was quite a success...They announced alot of things that consumers wanted to hear...I know you now you have to effectively subscribe to play online, but you'll be getting free stuff for doing so in the process, which is a great counter offer for people who loved the free PS3 online.

Alot of redeeming features too...12 new IP's exclusive to the PS4, upgradable hard drive, region free, can play pre-owned/used games without being penalised (the instructional video on how to share your games on the PS4 was laugh out loud hilarious), marketing at £329 and a ton of partnerships with big music and movie groups.

Just don't understand the logic behind Microsofts decision making...They've handed the crown to Sony. Which has the better game line-up is merely opinion...But it's a fact Sony have a stronger machine regarding hardware. Really don't know where Microsoft go from here tbh.
Title: Re: E3 2013

I know you now you have to effectively subscribe to play online, but you'll be getting free stuff for doing so in the process

All that free stuff... that costs money right??.. lol.. there's no way of sugar-coating the fact that your getting rinsed to play online just like the rest of us.. as a strong advocate of free online gaming.. I'm surprised your so upbeat about the news.. well I'm not really.. but y'know - its kinda funny with the arguments you've tried to raise in the past... I've no doubt you'll adopt PS+ as soon as the PS4 arrives.  ;D
Title: Re: E3 2013
Post by: AVFCRoss on June 11, 2013, 09:05:03 PM
Well put it this way, they could have very easily said "We'll charge you for the online service, and if you want PS+, we'll charge you for that too."

Sony could have very easily kept both services seperate and charged double, or something...At least they're giving customers something back for them having to fork out a little bit more to play online, whereas Microsoft have just completely ripped the soul out of their consumer base with all their nonsense decisions.

Having to have your console connected online at least once every 24 hours is a joke, and I don't even need to go into their policy on used games...Oh yeah, and you also need to have gold subscription if you wanna use Netflix, as well as pay the 5 quid a month on top.

Whats with all the kinect bullshit too? They're becoming as bad as Nintendo with all this gimmicky shite...The sad thing about that is, the hiked up price compared to the PS4 is probably down to the fact you have to have kinect with the bundle...Take it out and you probably save at least 50 quid, but you're doing stuff Microsofts way and thats the bottom line.

Not that I give a shit or anything, I'm more than happy with what the PS4 is offering and I don't even need to give it a second thought at to what console I'm picking up this winter.
Title: Re: E3 2013
Post by: Late on June 11, 2013, 09:20:23 PM
Everyone with a ps3 should already be on PS+ anyway. The "free" games they give you are fantastic.

In most respects Sony has Microsoft beat hands down, by my reckoning.
However I much prefer the Xbox controller to the PlayStation controller. Don't know what the fuck use it's touchpad is.
Title: Re: E3 2013
Post by: harv on June 11, 2013, 10:10:37 PM
Hang on. Sony aren't charging anyone to play online. It's the same deal as with the PS3 - you can play online without paying a penny but get charged for PlayStation Plus which gives you 'free' games and access to Beta versions of games. Online is still free for the PS4, it's working exactly the same way as the PS3 online system. They said this during their conference.
Title: Re: E3 2013

Nope, check again, one of their PS+ slides said online multiplayer was now part of the program

Title: Re: E3 2013
Post by: harv on June 12, 2013, 12:16:28 AM
Fuck it. I'm just going to do my multiplatform gaming on my PC. Online gaming should be free, I already pay enough for the games and my internet connection, Sony can sack my cook if they think I'm going to pay over the odds just to play games online. Fuck them. >:(

Wouldn't be so bad if we end up paying the same currency value as they do in the States but I can see those of us unlucky enough to live in the UK getting shafted as per usual.
Title: Re: E3 2013
Post by: Late on June 12, 2013, 01:43:48 AM
Tbh you could buy a ps4 and subscribe to PS+ and never need to ever buy a game - the games they give you free each month would be enough. You wouldn't be bang up to date with all the latest games, but who is these days? I still haven't bought xcom even though it looks fantastic and came out 8 months ago. I'm waiting for it to drop to £15.
If I were on ps3 I'd be downloading it for free this month, along with uncharted 3, lbp karting, deus ex human revolution, saints row 3, and machinarium...

£35 a year for those games and dozens more? Absolute bargain.
Title: Re: E3 2013
Post by: jman on June 12, 2013, 08:21:26 AM
Aye.. we've been over this before though.. technically any free game you download via PS+ is not yours, you cant keep, nor sell, nor trade it... only play it.. and the second you stop paying your subscription, you lose access to the games... technically its a glorified renting service... I don't think I'd of bothered given the choice.. but now as its just an added bonus to having to pay for online gaming - you'd have to hope that Sony don't water down the service.   Bit puzzled as to why Deus Ex Human Revolution is on this months list though... wasn't that the game that started this conversation last time??  I mean that's an old game now.. does PS+ repeat quite a few of its games then ??

If money on games was really your concern you'd turn to the PC.. with the expense of these next-gen consoles.. it wouldn't cost much more to put a decent PC together.. plus the PC offers free online, far cheaper versions of games and deals where you can pay what you want for the games (Humble Bundles)... Machinarium (as you have mentioned it) was available for whatever price you wanted to pay for it well over 2 years ago on the PC.

Not that I give a shit or anything

No, of course not,  ;D ;D

Well you enjoy paying extra on top of your games to play them online next-gen... personally I couldn't give a stuff about it, I'd get PS+ and XLG for each console if I wanted them... but I remember how much of a bitch-fit you had before over it - hilarious.
Title: Re: E3 2013
Post by: Late on June 12, 2013, 10:25:26 AM
...technically any free game you download via PS+ is not yours, you cant keep, nor sell, nor trade it... only play it...
Semantics. Technically any paid game you download via xbla is yours, but good luck trying to sell or trade it.
My hypothesis was you could buy the console and pay the subs and not need to buy any games - so we'll take the payment of subscription fees as a given in that scenario. Own it or rent it makes no difference in practical terms on a digital download, so long as you keep paying your subs. It's just a name. The reality of it is that once you've paid your subs you can download any game they offer you at no extra cost, and you can play that game as much as you want - that month, years later, whenever you want. Just like owning it.

Now I'll confess I know little about PS+, but my understanding is you usually get around 3 games a month for ps3 and a couple for vita. I'll ignore the vita element of that (though the inclusion of free games for that handheld plus it's integration into all ps4 games makes it a compelling purchase) and I'll assume that releases for the ps4 will be similar to on the ps3 - so around 3 games a month. Assuming of those 3, one is a good game you haven't played before, one is a mediocre game you haven't played before, and one is a game you've already played (sound about right? I have no idea, but that sounds fairly likely to me) that means every month you're getting a good game, a mediocre one, and occasionally a game you've already played before - for around £3.
That's enough to tide me over nicely. I probably average around one good game and one mediocre game a month on the 360, but I pay for them. I usually wait until prices drop, but it still adds up to quite a lot of money. And I pay my gold subscription. I could sell those games, but I usually don't - I like to have a catalogue available to me, even though I don't often go back to games I've completed. And if I did sell them I wouldn't get anywhere near the difference in price between buying them on xbox and getting them for free on playstation.
(Another consideration, but this is entirely personal preference, is I quite like digital copies of games rather than physical ones - partly because there's no disk spinning, so it's quieter and less likely to fail, but mainly because I have a bad back and my console's only a few inches from the floor - so I hate changing disks!)

I don't want to sound like I'm hailing the ps4 as the saviour of the generation. There's a lot of stuff I don't like about it, and there's a lot of stuff about the xb1 that I really do like. I'm just putting forward the argument that ps+ seems fantastic value to me.

As for your argument about pc gaming being the better option in terms of keeping annual costs down, I'm in complete agreement - as you know, I'm seriously considering having a steambox or other pc hooked up to my tv instead of a console next generation.

NB I couldn't be arsed to put quote marks around all references to "free" games, but if we assume you're going with the subscription service on whichever console you buy (which I would do) then to all intents and purposes those games are free.

What exactly did I have a "bitch-fit" about?

Whilst it's true that, I'm not a huge fan of subscription based services for online games, I'm not exactly surprised Sony have moved in this direction, and I'm willing to accept the compromise that they've proposed regarding the subscription being linked to PS+...If it was JUST a one off fee with PS+ separate from the package, I would have had a problem.

As Late has already said though, PS+ is fantastic...The only reason It's never appealed to me is because 90% of the games they offer are ones I've already purchased...Majoirty of stuff I buy on the PS Store are DLC packs for existing retail games I own, and since PS+ doesn't offer DLC, then I have no reason to buy it...That doesn't make it any less of a fantastic deal, it just doesn't cater to my needs.

I'm more than happy to sign up and try out new PSN titles next-gen, and any game that comes free that I don't own I will happily download and play.

Bought a mate's PS3 off him just so I can buy The Last of Us.  ;D Gave me all his games too so I'm playing GT5 atm. For a game that's nearly 3 years old it's still gorgeous. I've noticed the PSN Store looks a lot better since I last had a PS3.

The main point about digital downloads over a renting service like PS+ is that I can keep my games long after my subscription or anything else has finished.. they are mine forever.  Say there goes 2 months on PS+ where I've played all the games on offer or I'm not interested in them.. and there's likely to be months like that - your paying money to upkeep the games you have downloaded in the past.  That doesn't interest me.. and I don't know too much detail about the games on offer on PS+ either but if Ross is saying he owns 90% of them.. there's a good chance that I too would own a vast majority of them too before they arrived on the service.

Plus I wouldn't be too expectant for the service not to get watered down now that it includes online multiplayer features are there will be a ton of new subscribers... the first game you'll get with PS+ on the PS4 is a bit of a jip.. a F2P version of Drive Club.. even MS are doing a F2P version of Killer Instinct... :-\  Maybe it will be like this for a good few months until there's actual games they can give away for free.. who knows.

Ross.. your actual word about having to pay for online gaming was "criminal"  ;D  ;D

You're see it as you're paying for the games.
I'm seeing it the other way round. I'm paying for the online service. The games are just a bonus. (And a pretty bloody good bonus.)

I'm paying for gold anyway. I'll pay for ps+ in the exact same way.
I don't care if the free games require me to keep my subs up - I was going to pay them anyway. Irrespective of what games are on offer. Even if no games are on offer.
I'm getting it because I'm perfectly prepared to pay a couple of quid a month for online gaming (even though I don't often game online) - exactly the same as on the xbox.
Getting dozens of full games for free every year is just a bonus - and one that means I may well save a lot of money buying retail games.
It's entirely possibly the games might stink some months, but the service has been up and running for a year now and the quality so far has been impressive, from what I've seen.
It'll probably take a bit of a dip in the year or so after ps4 starts, because it's all about giving people back-catalogue games and of course there's unlikely to be much of a back-catalogue when the console's new.
Either way, though, I maintain ps+ is a better service than gold.

Well.. at the moment you are just paying for the games.. because you don't get much else with PS+ on the PS3 .. its implementation with the PS4 is yet to be seen.. whether the PS+ service will continue in the same fashion I mean.. either way, if I had a PS4, I'd be in the same boat as Ross, which would be paying for the online service primarily.. I haven't been paying for much online action with XBLG in the past 2 years either way.. I think I paid for about 1-2 months when Halo 4 came out and that was it.. the rest have been free trials and offers... my online presence has taken a nose dive since Bungie stopped making Halo and I found it tougher to make time to play online.  The Netflix side and all the other stuff that comes with the packages doesn't really appeal to me.  But I'm still of the opinion that XBL is a better online platform than PSN.. and you get what you pay for.. that's just an opinion but I think that's why Sony have introduced this online paywall... they want to give a better service to their customers which is fair enough... personally I don't have a problem paying for online gameplay.. as long as there are great games to play online!!

That games list is fairly comprehensible too.. but yeah, there's probably only about 3 or 4 that I would of taken advantage of.. I'd of probably downloaded a fair few of them that I wouldn't of bought normally.. but actually getting round to playing them.. doubtful.

Typed a long reply but deleted it for fear we're just going to keep going in circles. We'll never get past the "ifs and buts" on this, as we're looking from completely different perspectives, so we're probably best putting it to bed by saying that ps+ is great for some folk but isn't for everyone.

Yep absolutely...

Back onto E3 and something that has been slightly overlooked with the old Sony vs Microsoft hoohah.. (you may agree with me on this one)...

Oculus Rift (http://www.pcworld.com/article/2041464/eyes-on-oculus-rift-vr-headset-ramps-up-the-resolution.html) is awesome.. well it sounds awesome anyway with people getting tech demos at E3... would love to give this a go.. and is certainly something I'd be looking into buying at release.

I love the idea of Oculus Rift.

Would love to get my hands on one (so long as there's a few games, and there's no latency/lag issues). Everything I've read and seen about it has been really positive. It's one of those things, though, where you'll never be sure how good it is until you have a go on it yourself.

I think I mentioned a while back on here that the idea of combining an Oculus Rift headset and a Falcon controller is a very exciting prospect.

I think the main reason OR is going down a storm everywhere is because everyone at some point must of had the idea that VR will be the future.. I actually played a virtual reality game back in the 90s when everyone was going nuts for VR and it was awesome.. but very disorientating and the graphics were shit... but it was still great!  I cant for the life of me remember what game I was playing.. but you were in charge of an orb shaped ship and I remember flying through some desert.. I always thought it was "Dune" but I cant find anything to corroborate that a VR game actually existed for it.

That falcon controller looks good... although I think it just proves that playing a game using OR alone is probably not going to be as immersive as most people think.. you would need other peripherals to get the most out of it I reckon.
