Title: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 13, 2013, 04:24:57 PM
United have just had their first pre-season friendly today against the Singha All-Star XI and lost 1-0. Young Adnan looked great good performance from Zaha who hit the woodwork. Zaha still has this look of awe on his face, bless his cotton socks, and comes across as a real quiet and shy lad in the two interviews I've seen him in.

Played against a team made up with 7 players from the top side in Thailand who are halfway through their season, including the top scorer who got the deflected goal. I expected us to win but it was a tough match in very humid conditions...not a good start for Moyes but not a disaster either, it was a decent performance.

The one thing that's disappointed me is that we seem to be playing an offside trap for the first time in donkey's years which I never like seeing, way too easy to beat a side playing that way. :-\

Nice comfortable 4-0 win to kick off our pre-season today against Preston, celebrating what would have been Shankly's 100th birthday. We looked lively despite the conditions, dominated possession throughout and created plenty of chances.  Well-taken goals from Coutinho, Ibe, Sterling and new boy Aspas. No complaints from me. :)

Now we're off on our Asia/Australia tour, beginning next Saturday in Jakarta to play an Indonesia XI side.

Zaha starting this morning, Welbeck looking like he's up front on his own again with Van Persil on the bench. Really looking forward to seeing Zaha and Adnan playing again, Adnan is on the bench but he's bound to see some more action after his great performance last week.

Fucking hell, the tickets sold out for this game in 5 minutes :o

0-2 at halftime against the A-League XI, goals from Lingard and Welbeck. Both players have had a great first half but I think Welbeck may have picked up an injury. I reckon Van Persil will come on for the second half. Zaha has had another solid game with some nice bits of skill.

A much better performance than last week but then the lads have had an extra week of training and they're not playing in a temperature of 86 degrees with 75% humidity :o

Woah! Outstanding goal from Lingard after the Aussies pulled a goal back. 1-3 now, not a bad game so far. ;D

4th from Welbeck with a nice header and the final goal from Van Persil. 1-5 final score and our first trophy lol. :P

Welbeck got the MOTM award but I reckon that should have gone to Lingard myself with Welbeck and Zaha coming very close to deserve it. 8)

Only played one friendly so far,

Dorados de Sinaloa 0, Norwich City 3

We are playing another in the small hours of tomorrow morning against San Jose Earthquakes.

Zaha really is looking like the real deal so far, can't wait to see how he does against better opposition. He needs to work on his finishing but that will improve with confidence. He came pretty close to scoring a few this morning and he already has the confidence to take people on and beat them so I reckon it's only a matter of time before the goals come. 8)

Adnan Madeupnamethatsanightmaretospell is also looking very tasty, he was voted the Reserve player of the season last season and I can see him getting plenty of first team action. Lingard has also impressed.

Some great young players coming through, the future is very bright for United. De Gea, Jones, Smalling, Rafael, Fabio, Butner, Michael Keane, Cleverley, Adnan, Zaha, Lingard, Will Keane and Welbeck. That's us pretty much sorted for the next 10 to 15 years in loads of different positions. Fergie was right when he said that the squad was in great shape for Moyes. 8)

Fucking hell, you can add Kagawato that list too, didn't realise he was only 24 :o 8)

He won't be playing tomorrow though, but I think he has started training. Moyesie is learning Japanese too apparently in case Kagawa struggles to understand Sweaty Sockese lol :P

Great equaliser from Lingard after Zaha roasts the defence. He really is looking special, no wonder Palace wanted him back to finish the season :o

An entertaining game though but Yokohama were sharper due to being halfway through their season. >:(

We'll have to wait and see. ;)

I think we're going to retain the Premiership this season, but if there was one manager that deserves the 'clueless' label it would be Wenger. Makes you wonder what arse would have won if he didn't inherit the best defence and keeper in the division when he took over. ;D

Wenger created most of the invincibles team, not even Fergie had a team that went an entire season unbeaten and the goblin Moyes has no hope.

Liverpool chopped and changed and are now out of the top 4 for the forseeable future, manyoo with the goblin in charge won't be long behind

True, but Fergie won more than Wenger over the years they were against each other. If you are happy with one season of invincibility, against many seasons of winning trophies you are as deluded as Harv.  8)

It's ok Moyes is a slow starter. When your bottom half by Christmas just believe. You'll be fine.....still can't believe you appointed David "No European pedigree - Won Fuck All" Moyes.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 26, 2013, 10:58:39 PM
Given our nightmare fixture list I'll be very happy to be in the top 4 by Christmas, if we're within 10-12 points behind the leaders on New Years Day then we'll win the Premiership again.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: bealec on July 27, 2013, 08:51:54 AM
Not with Moyes and his master plan of failing to sign big players and settling for Everton players who, like him, have won sweet FA.

Man United under Fergie is attractive to big name players. United under Moyes...No Thanks. Chelsea under Jose is much more attractive.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 27, 2013, 11:36:58 AM
United will always attract big players, doesn't matter who's managing the club.

Plenty of other attacking midfielders available if we don't get Fibreglass too. As for us signing Everton players the only one we've made a bid on so far is Baines, but I'd be quite happy if we went for Fellaini.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: bealec on July 27, 2013, 06:00:21 PM
You don't need to buy Fellaini you just get someone to blow on his head and all the little Fellaini seeds will fly off and create new ones.

Our pre-season tour came to an end today with a 3-0 win against a Thailand XI after beating Melbourne Victory 2-0 and an Indonesia XI 4-0. Nice to have 3 clean sheets and a few goals but the real work will probably start after Stevie's testimonial against Olympiacos as we get closer to the big day!  ;D

Pre season friendlies and tournaments mean shit about the new season........they are what they are, a friendly to get players fit and try to find/hone a formation or group of formations with the players. Even though no team wants too lose, it means tiddly squat about the new season.................................look at the Premier Asia Cup, after Spurs easily lost 3-1 to Sunderland, Man City beat South China 1-0, only for Spurs to put 6 goals past South China, and City beat Sunderland in the final by only 1 goal.

Yeah, as if you won't be bragging about the Abramovich era in 20 years time... ::)

Besides, we've won more major trophies, have a richer history, and were a massive part of the roots of English football. You could argue in many respects that Chelsea may not even have existed without teams like the Villa paving the way for professional football in this country...Chelsea were a spec before Roman and his millions came to the forefront...You got extremely lucky that he chose your club to plough his fortunes into, because there's no way you'd have won the amount of stuff you have without that money.

Say what you want about Villa, we've won trophies over periods of time where money hasn't been a massive influencing factor on success...We might not have won much recently, but who has in the monopolisation of 21st century professional football?

0-3 to United at halftime, goals from Welbeck, Smalling and Fabio. Very poor opposition, could have had twice as many goals at least. Adnan coming on at halftime, think that Moyesie may be thinking about bringing him through if we don't manage to buy another attacking midfielder.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread

Adnan with his first goal as a first team player makes it 0-4. Will be disappointed if we don't get another 3 at least.

Omfg, another quality goal from Kitchee makes it 2-4 :o

Oh well, keeps the crowd happy lol :P ;D

We lost a bit of attacking prowess when Zaha moved from the right wing into the middle I think. He's still pretty good in the middle but diagonal runs from a player running inside towards the goal are always a bigger threat to defenders than a run through the middle.

Bugger, was in Miami last week and thought it was a bit weird seeing a few Chelsea signs around, didn't frickin realise we are actually playing at the sun life stadium there on Wednesday against real, we drove past it on way to Orlando, it's huge!  Could of sorted something out had I known sooner, as it is, going back to Miami on Saturday instead  >:(

Vidic and Nani back from injury, no Roonster because he's got a 'shoulder injury'.

Henriquez is on the bench, very interested to see him play because there's been a fair amount of hype about the young Chilean.

Wow, it's looking like having a new manager has lit a fire under Nani's bum, he's been great for these first 15 minutes. Good to see.

This is looking like a good test for United, AIK are unbeaten in 10 matches and certainly aren't pulling any punches. :o

0-0 at halftime, plenty of chances for both sides and some excellent saves from both keepers. I'll be really surprised if this ends up goalless. Henriquez hasn't impressed too much which is disappointing but he only had 15 minutes so will be patient. :P

2 wins out of 6 in pre-season for United now...

I know it's only really pre-season, but given the way you always bleat on about how good Man United's strength in depth is, it's a little bit concerning your deeper reaches of the squad are failing to put away teams that would struggle in League 1 and 2.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread

Just wait until the season starts mate. Even with our nightmare fixtures at the start of the season we should still be in the top 4 after Christmas. And the transfer window doesn't close until 2nd September so there's plenty of time to get a new player or two.

One interesting thing is that Anderson is another player that's had a fire lit up his bum. Not sure if it's down to the yoof players coming through or because there was a problem between him and Fergie but he's played the best during these pre-season friendlies since we signed him.

I'm quite confident we'll retain the Premiership this season, and that's even if we let the Roonster go and don't sign anyone.

Well going into our final friendly on Saturday against Celtic we've had a good pre-season in terms of results:

Preston - won 4-0
Indonesia - won 2-0
Melbourne Victory - won 2-0
Thailand - won 3-0
Olympiacos - won 2-0
Valerenga - won 4-1

More important than the results is that the team is looking sharp and our new signings have looked decent - Iago Aspas getting 5 goals over the 6 games. If Sturridge isn't fit and Suarez goes, he could end up starting upfront in our first league game against Stoke, so it's been good to observe his clever movement and neat tricks and flicks. Hopefully he can produce the goods when the time comes.

Would be glad to see the back of him. Ideally to someone other than Arsenal though for 3 reasons:

1) By strengthening Arsenal we will effectively rule out any chance of making the top 4.

2) If he has a good season there, Madrid, PSG or some other filthy rich club will probably come in and take him off Arsenal, making them a profit in the process.

3) Their £40,000,001 bid was an insult.

Aw bollocks, had a bad hypo and missed Rio's testimonial >:(

We ended up losing 1-3 :o

The way we've been going with our pre-season we might end up getting relegated lololol ;D

Charity Shield on Sunday (I'm refusing to call it the Community Shield cos it sounds shite imo) so it's Moyes' first attempt at a trophy since joining United. 8)

I think that Adnan should have done enough during pre-season to get a start against Wigan, he's been absolutely phenomenal. If Iwwere Moyesie I'd be tempted to drop all attempts to sign a midfield playmaker and stick with him.

Very nice finishing in Arsenal's 3-1 win against citeh.  Even without Suarez we are looking good.  Giroud has been banging them in for fun, yes a lot came against lesser quality opponents, but they were of the same quality as yanited faced.  He scored another nice goal against citeh so is doing it at all levels.  Can see him getting 20+ goals this season.

Van Gaal's first United lineup:

De Gea

Smalling Jones Evans

Valencia Herrera Fletch Shaw

Mata

Roonster Welbeck

So 3-4-1-2 (or for those of us that are old fashioned 3-5-2 with an attacking midfielder in the hole).

Quite happy with that. A tough test for United, LA Galaxy are 17 games into their season so their match fitness and match sharpness is far superior and the players for United are working on a new way of playing. Robbie Keane is also in great form, 9 goals in 15 matches.

Going to be interesting to see how this turns out. 8)

Great work from Mata and a fantastic strike from Welbeck puts United a goal up. Quite an open game so far, Mata and Herrera have put in some great work in these first 15 minutes. ;D

The Roonster gets number 2 with a penalty. Galaxy started to get into the game a bit more around the 30 minute mark for about 5 minutes but we've got control of the game again now. Our passing movement is back again, as are our lovely triangles. Herrera and Fletch are in control of the midfield.

And the Roonster gets number 3. 8)

We'll have to wait and see how they do against better opposition, although LA Galaxy are a decent side to be fair. And we're doing better than we were during last season's pre-season friendlies already. If I remember correctly we won 2, drew 2 and lost 3.

I have already said that we'll win the Premiership next season though. We've got a manager with plenty of tactical nouse who likes his teams to play fast-paced attacking and counter attacking football. Our passing movement is back, our triangles are back and in Herrera we have a player in the middle of the park that's able and willing to deliver Scholes-esque diagonal balls with accuracy to players out wide.

We've got a difficult group in this pre-season competition though.

Next up is Roma on Saturday, Inter on Wednesday and Real Madras the following Saturday. Citeh and the red scouse gits have got things a little easier with Olympiakos and AC Milan in their group. The winners of each group play each other in the Final for the mickey mouse trophy.

At least 3 matches that are going to be a good test for United and their new setup.

Going to be interesting to see what sort of signings he's going to make, we need cover in central defence and at left back as well as maybe a central holding midfielder. But we could see him giving the yoof a decent shot, perhaps..? :-\

Been an up and down pre-season for us so far.

First off we lost 2-1 to Brondby and one of our new signings (Emre Can) had to go off after 20 mins with an injury. Not good.

Then we beat Preston 2-1 which was a promising performance from our youngsters. Suso with a peach of a goal.

Last night we lost 1-0 to Roma with a last minute Agger OG. Was an extremely dull game and Borini injured his shoulder after about 15 minutes, but on the bright side we created a little bit more than they did, Coutinho and Can looked very good, and a few youngsters played well again.

Next up we've got Olympiakos in this International Champions Cup thingy. We should see some more of our first-teamers come in now like Sturridge, Gerrard, Sterling and hopefully we get to see Lallana and Markovic, and maybe even Remy depending on how quickly we wrap that up.

Have been watching a fair bit of MUTV these last few days and watching an interview with Eric The King. He says he left Leeds because the relationship between the manager and the players changed and because they started playing the long ball a lot more. Didn't mention anything about him shagging the captain's, Lee Chapman's, wife lol ;D

Mind you, that was when she was a right hornbat, before she had the cosmetic surgery cock up and ended up looking like a trout lmfao ;D

Blackett and Cleverley are the two players that are playing for 90 minutes this time around. I can see Blackett playing center back for half of the game and as a wing back for the other half. Blackett is a great defender, part of the reason why I wasn't too worried about Evra and Buttner going. He's ideally a center back but is a pretty good left back too.

Think we'll also be seeing Hernandez playing 45 minutes too. ;D
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 26, 2014, 09:06:32 PM
Johnstone

Jones Evans Blackett

Valencia Herrera Cleverley James

Mata

Roonster Welbeck

Much tougher opposition this time and playing at a mile above sea level in hot and humid conditions. The winning side gets 3 points, 2 points for a win on penalties and 1 point for losing on penalties with penalties happening if it's level after 90 minutes.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 26, 2014, 09:50:51 PM
Roma have had the better chances, United's chances were few and far between. Roma trying to exploit our back three with pace but most of their runs have been poorly timed resulting in offside decisions.

The Roonster has one chance from 25 yards or so and bungs it in the top corner. A great strike. And a few minutes later the Roonster plays a 20 yard through ball from the center of midfield to Mata, a great first touch and a great finish.

2-0. 8) ;D

We don't really deserve to be ahead on the balance of play but the difference is that we've put our chances away.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 26, 2014, 10:05:45 PM
The Roonster makes it 3-0 with a penalty.

That's 4 goals in 2 matches, or rather two 45 minute halves lol :P

He's been the real difference between the two sides. ;D

Really haven't been expecting us to be playing as well as we have been so far during pre-season, we may concede a goal or two in the second half as Van Gaal makes 9 changes though.

We weren't really in the game that much during the first half hour but after the water break we just seemed to turn it on, mainly due to our passing in the middle third of the pitch improving. The movement was there but most of the passes were going astray for some reason. Looking at the highlights of the first half I've just noticed that one of the Roonster, Welbeck or Mata dropped a little deeper, probably why our passing improved. Interesting that they rotated that, made things less predictable and kept possession.

Post by: harv on July 26, 2014, 10:56:34 PM
5 minutes to go. Roma got one back with a Beckham/Roonster type lob from inside their own half. Looked like about 3 yards further out too.

Now they've got a dodgy penalty and got another one back. 3-2 with a minute to go :o
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 26, 2014, 11:07:27 PM
That's 3 points in the bag, 3-2 final score. Just about deserved the win. Young and Smalling both look like they're putting last season behind them so far. Nani is still a waste of space lol ;D Cleverley had a good game but played 70 minutes instead of 90...think Van Gaal did that just to shut the fucking Mexicans up lololol ;D ;D ;D

Not a bad performance at the end of the day, certainly reinforced the importance of discipline and concentration for defenders playing with 3 central defenders and wing backs as well as the importance of one of the 3 forward players dropping deeper to retain possession in the middle third when the wing-backs are pushed back.

Just seen that first Roma goal again, absolutely outstanding, although not too sure what Amos was doing so far off his line. Oh well, he made up for it with a fantastic save about 5 minutes later though. ;D

A good test for United though and with the altitude a great help with improving fitness and sharpness before the season starts. Next up is Inter on Thursday and then Real Madras on Saturday.

Here's the starting selection for United:

Linda

Smalling Jones Evans

Valencia Fletch Herrera Young

Mata

Roonster Welbeck

Looks like Van Gaal is happy with using Young as a wing back after all. Not so sure about that myself.

0 - 0 at halftime, quite a tight game but United have had the better chances. Inter are doing the same thing that Roma tried the other day - trying to catch our back three out with long balls over the top but, as with Roma, it isn't doing them a lot of good. Am quite confident that if the same sides were to come out for the second half that we'd end up winning the game.

Fletch is doing a great job of directing the play and is captain again. Wonder if he's going to end up in the back three again for the second half..?
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread

0-0 fulltime, penalties it is. Good performance from United, had the best chances and kept Inter's chances to a bare minimum. Think De Gea was the only United keeper that had a save to make. Could have had a penalty in the second half too. 2 points for a penalty win and 1 point for losing on penalties.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread

Nice! United won 5-3 on penalties. We deserved 3 points from that though tbh.

Quite like the way these fixtures have turned out, they've been getting progressively harder as they've gone along - LA Galaxy<Roma<Inter Milan<Real Madras.

All of our matches so far have been pretty comfortable, we've been good at keeping possession and when losing possession we've been pretty quick winning it back by pressing quickly. Not sure what the other table is looking like but it would be great to make it to the Final and win it.

Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 30, 2014, 06:05:41 PM
Yup, although we've got to get some sort of result against Real Madras first though. Very happy at the way we've been playing so far under Van Gaal. Our fast-paced attacking game is back, we're keeping possession well, when we lose possession we tend to win it back by pressing well, we're playing with plenty of width and are defending well again.

Roma and Inter have both tried, and failed, to exploit our back three with high balls over the top of the back three but they've held their line very well despite multiple changes to our defence. A bit of a daft way to play against us tbh, bunging those long balls in allows the keeper to sweep the ball away without much of a problem. You're better off attacking us using width and crosses into the goal area or through the middle with one and two touch passing and one-twos to get past our defenders...just the way that we played against Inter last night in fact.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread

Well that was bloody entertaining! We beat City 3-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in 90 minutes. Smart finishes from Henderson and Sterling in normal time, and then good penalties from Can, Henderson and Lucas. Mignolet the hero with 2 saves. We go top of the group on 5 points.

Most importantly, some seriously promising stuff from the likes of Henderson and Sterling. Can continues to impress, and Coutinho is doing everything right but his shooting ability lets him down. We look even more of a threat going forward than we did last season.

As for the defence, more than enough shaky moments for my liking. Too vulnerable down the flanks but it's good that we played a side like City who are good enough to show us where we need to improve before the season gets underway.

Fantastic passing movement from United and Young puts United a goal ahead. Great piece of football. A 20 pass move with mostly one touch football. This is a weakened Real Madras side but even so they've still got a good few big name players such as Casillas, Pepe, Ramos, Modric and Bale.

Keane gave away a daft penalty though >:(

Don't know what Van Gaal has done to Young but he's looking like he's worth every penny we've paid for him. 2-1 now, not sure if the Roonster or Young got it in. Will have to see a replay.

7 minutes to go until halftime and we deserve to go in ahead.

We're in the final no matter what happens in this game against Milan due to us having a stronger head to head record against both Olympiacos and City and all 3 teams being on 5 points. Should be an interesting "friendly"...  :P
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on August 02, 2014, 11:41:44 PM
Yup, didn't realise that the red scouse gits were confirmed as being in the Final.

Think Mr Rodgers should take everything he learnt about playing against United last season and throw it in the bin. This is a completely different Manchester United we're seeing here under Van Gaal:

Played 4, Won 3, Drawn 1, Lost 0, Goals For 13, Goals Against 3 :o

7 goals were against LA Galaxy but they had the best defensive record in the MLS and Robbie Keane before the match started had scored 9 goals in 15 games, and they were 15 games into their season so had an advantage with regards to fitness and sharpness. :)

The commentators during the match on MUTV said that people were paying $100 for a parking space :o :o :o

109,318 people in the crowd...wonder how much money was paid in total for parking. Fucking hell, hope United got a decent cut of that lmfao ;D ;D ;D

Good luck for later on mate. I think you may be a bit shocked by how United are playing since Van Gaal has taken over, and this is just after two weeks. :o It's quite remarkable tbh. And we're only going to get better too as the players get more used to the new formation, movement and one touch passing. I can see a great deal of Premiership teams struggling to cope with our pace next season. 8)

Mind you, now I've said all that we'll probably play like a sluggish pile of old pants and get hammered lmfao ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: ancelotti on August 04, 2014, 10:54:35 PM
Aye, best of luck.  :P I'm under no illusions about this United side. I watched your game against Madrid and a bit of the game against Inter. I was surprised, especially because I thought the Italian sides might cope better with your 3 at the back formation given that it's always been a very popular formation in Serie A. The Italian sides tend to be more tactically adept than English sides but neither Inter nor Roma (seemingly) knew how to combat it. Some of the football LVG has got you guys playing is incredible compared to how clueless you looked at OT last season when we turned you over.

Moreover, this game means more to you than it does to us as you've got something to prove. LVG has taken the pre-season very seriously by warning first teamers they're basically playing for their places in the squad. Ours on the other hand has been very relaxed.

I don't think Rodgers will put out a very strong side, and I think he'll probably throw out a formation we don't use very often, like 4-2-3-1. Win or lose, I just don't want any more injuries given we've already got 3 important players out (Sturridge, Lallana, Markovic) going into the start of the season.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on August 04, 2014, 11:25:22 PM
The problem that Roma and Inter had against our 3-4-3 formation is that they decided to throw long balls over the top of the back 3, which allowed the keepers to act as a sweeper. And they didn't really seem to have a Plan B. Another problem that all 4 teams against us so far have had is dealing with United's intelligent pressing when we lose possession. The pitch appears quite large when we have possession but is compacted right down VERY quickly when we lose it.

Other things I've noticed are United having one of the back 3 pushing forward every now and then which either leaves them free topreceive the ball and start something off if an opponent's midfielder doesn't track back or leaves one of our midfielders free in the middle if they do. And with most passing movement the triangles are equilateral but due to the wing backs pushing forward so much our triangles are often right angled and longer, which players aren't used to dealing with.

I do get nervous when I see any side playing mostly one-touch football though, it's very risky if for some reason a couple of players have a bad game.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread

De Gea

Smalling Jones Evans

Valencia Herrera Fletch Young

Mata

Roonster Hernandez

The Roonster is captain. I can see Jones, Evans and Fletch being favourites for the permanent position though.

Ah well, punished for not taking our chances when we had them. United took their goals well. Couple of things should be obvious to Rodgers now:

1) Glen Johnson is shite
2) We need another striker

Time to try and get about 5 hours of sleep, tops.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on August 05, 2014, 01:33:35 PM
You forgot one:

3) Lambert is shite

I can't believe that Rodgers has spent so much money on so many average players. Should have offered a big chunk of that cash on someone like Cavani. Sturridge is always good for a few goals and Sterling will also cause teams a lot of problems but the dodgy red scouse gits should have spent money on a player that's capable of scoring 30-odd goals per season. :-\
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: ancelotti on August 05, 2014, 04:52:12 PM
Unfortunately it isn't that simple. Suarez didn't just score 30+ goals last season, he also created more chances for his team mates than any other player in the league except Hazard. Losing him meant there were two voids to fill - the goals and the creativity.

Blowing the cash on Cavani wouldn't have done us much good as he's a pretty basic finisher. His wages are also likely through the roof. I'm confident we'll pick up another striker before the window is closed. Lambert will chip in with about 10 goals this season. He's not had a great pre-season but then he's adjusting to a completely new style of play, and that's not always easy for a player of his age. He'll get there.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on August 05, 2014, 05:10:04 PM
What do you mean a different style of play..? He's playing with half of his old team mates :P ;D

Seriously though, I've always thought that he's overrated. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

As for affording players' wage demands, all you need to do is piss off your kit producer (who's name escapes me for the moment!) and give Adidas a shout for £750m...worked for us anyway lol 8)

Interesting that the U21 side isn't playing 3-4-3 yet. They're playing 4-5-1 with 2 defensive midfielders. The U18s are playing on Sunday, I wonder if they'll be playing a different formation and tactics to the first team too..? You would have thought all 3 sides would be playing the same philosophy. :-\

1-1 at halftime. We went a goal down early on and surrendered A LOT of possession in the first half. United aren't pressing well at all. Wilson got the equaliser just before halftime against the run of play. They need to step their game up otherwise they're going to lose this.

Am really surprised that they're not playing 3-4-3 and one touch football, we've certainly go the players to do it.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread

Make that a goal or four for Wilson. I think we may see Hernandez going and Wilson taking his place in the first team squad. Funnily enough the thing that changed the game for United in the second half was playing with three at the back and wing backs. They're not playing with one and two touch football but did start to press better.

Last.pre-season friendly before the season kicks off at the weekend and Van Gaal's first time managing at the Theater Of Dreams against Valencia.

De Gea

Jones Smalling Blackett

Young Fletch Herrera James

Mata

Roonster Hernandez

Good to see Reece James playing again, he looked pretty tasty against LA Galaxy on his first team debut, scored a couple of goals and hasn't made another appearance until now. No surprise to see Blackett there, he's going to make competition for the left center-half position very close next season.

2-1 to United. Fellaini's height causing problems at the back and he got the winner. Goalie and defenders got in each other's way, a chest down and an easy finish into an empty goal. He was getting loads of grief from the crowd too, was feeling sorry for him lol ;D

Last kick of the game too. :o

Valencia deserved at least a draw from that too.

Still, that's Van Gaal's United unbeaten. Played 6, W5, D1, L0, GF18 GA5.

Pretty good considering the fact that they've been playing a new system for just 3 weeks and the quality of our opposition.

This season coming is going to be interesting.

First pre-season game for United against Club America. Surprisingly United are playing 4-4-2:

Johnstone

Darmian Jones Blind Shaw

Mata Schneiderlin Carrick Young

Roonster Memphis

Although Memphis is playing behind the Roonster rather than beside him, but not deep enough to make it 4-5-1. Looking a class act so far.

Blind is showing that he ISN'T a central defender. Darmian looking great so far, Schneiderlin put United ahead early on with a nice header.

Johnstone is having a fantastic game so far. Hasn't put a foot wrong so far. Almost the end of the first half and a completely different 11 for the second half. Memphis the best player so far. :o

United 1-0 up at halftime. Team for the second half:

1-0 final score, would have had another couple of goals if this wasn't their first match since their break. Solid game from the back four, and a solid game from Schweinsteiger. Great performances from our youngsters, particularly Pereira. Van Gaal would have been happy with the performances from both sides in each half I think.

Surprisingly, Schweinsteiger wasn't the best of our four debut performances...Schneiderlin and Memphis were the most impressive.

Aw bollocks, 2-1 now. Good goal too, although Schneiderlin could have done better.

Post by: harv on July 22, 2015, 04:54:16 AM
2-1 at halftime, great performance from United in the first half. The better side by far, have looked pretty solid at the back and Shaw  and Young were tearing them apart on the left. Darmian not as good going forward as he was during the first match but he has still had his moments.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 22, 2015, 05:26:49 AM
The second half has been a lot tighter and a little scrappy but Pereira gets goal number 3. A patient build up but the Earthquakes's defending could have been better. 3-1.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 22, 2015, 06:10:47 AM
3-1 final score. They played a lot more defensively during the second half, a much less open game than the first half. Still a good runrun around to raise fitness levels. 8)

Match against Barcelona kicking off at 9pm tonight. Will probably give an indication of who he's going to play against Spurs. The squad will be split into two again, one half playing 60 minutes and the other playing 30 minutes.

Going to be interesting to see if De Gea starts and how long he's going to play for. He may be the exception to that rule above and play 45 minutes perhaps..?
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 25, 2015, 08:30:31 PM
Team news:

De Gea

Darmian Jones Blind Shaw

Schneiderlin Carrick Young

Mata Roonster Memphis

Could be 4-3-3, 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 with two defensive midfielders.

Going to be interesting to see how the game goes.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 25, 2015, 09:16:55 PM
Barcelona hit the post, later produced a great save from De Gea. United looking dangerous down the left, win a corner and the Roonster's bonce puts United a goal ahead.

Great game so far, really open.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 25, 2015, 09:47:27 PM
Think Memphis may have had a slight strain on his hamstring. Darmian was down injured for a bit but hopefully he's okay to continue. After a shakey first 5 minutes or so at the back we're now looking pretty solid. Fantastic game so far.

Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread

Very strong last 5 minutes from Barcelona, they probably deserve to go in ahead on balance of play but United have defended well for the most part.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 25, 2015, 10:35:35 PM
Lingard gets number two. A really well worked goal from our youngsters, great build up and a good finish. 8)

Mostly the same changes as the previous two matches apart from Valencia and Fellaini coming on.

Major changes from Barcelona too now, the pace of Lingard, Wilson and Pereira is causing them all sorts of problems.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 25, 2015, 11:05:01 PM
Barcelona got one back, cracking volley from Rafinha...then 45 seconds later Adnan makes it 3-1. We certainly rode our luck at times, they hit the woodwork three times. Plenty of positives to take from this game and the other two games too - Darmian has been great both defensively and going forward, despite a dodgy game against Club America Blind has been looking good as a central defender, Shaw and Young are going to create LOADS of sides major problems with their pace and Memphis has been looking amazing. 8)
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread

United kicking off against PSG in half an hour. Team news:

De Gea

Darmian Jones Blind Shaw

Carrick Schweinsteiger

Mata Memphis Young

Roonster

Just one change, Schweinsteiger for Schneiderlin.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 30, 2015, 01:51:23 AM
Van Gaal is limiting himself to just 3 substitutions for this game, he'll be taking off Schweinsteiger and putting on Schneiderlin at halftime because his injury has interfered with his time playing. I'm expecting the same line-up and formation against Spurs that we had for the start of the match against Barcelona.

And if we win tonight we win the mickey mouse trophy again. ;D 8) ;D
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 30, 2015, 02:35:36 AM
Bollocks. 1-0 down. It's been an even game so far too. The movement of the Roonster and Memphis is causing them all sorts of problems.

Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 30, 2015, 04:06:10 AM
2-0 final score, a pretty poor performance. Our passing right from the start was awful and the final ball in the final third just as bad. Van Gaal made 7 substitutions I think. I've changed my mind about Johnstone, he's a good keeper but keeps on rushing out of the area. Great when it's timed properly (and to be fair he's only fucked this up once on this tour) but he's going to concede daft goals if he doesn't work on his decision making. :-\

We'd better do better against Spurs >:(

Only 25,000 seats filled out of 27,000 for United's first pre-season friendly. No surprise though because those tickets unsold will cost you £400 apparently :o Talk about LA Galaxy taking the piss lol

De Gea

Smalling Jones Blind

Valencia Herrera Carrick Fellaini Lingard

Mata Rashford

And Rashford puts United a goal up after a couple of minutes lol
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 16, 2017, 03:31:15 AM
0-3 now with 26 minutes gone. Another goal from Rashford and the third from Fellaini. L.A. Galaxy are fielding a second string side for the first half to be fair but I can see us beating the 0-7 score we got a couple of years ago hopefully.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 16, 2017, 03:55:55 AM
Bah! Only 0-3 at halftime which is disappointing. L.A. Galaxy's first team should be starting the second half, as well as Lindelof and Lukaku for United.

0-5 now, goals from Micki and Martial. 73 minutes gone. Lindelof is looking fantastic going forward so far. Loads of pace, good vision and a good passer of the ball.

2-5 final score, Real Salt Lake next on Monday.

Very impressed with Lindelof so far, but Lukaku had a poor 45 minutes imo.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 18, 2017, 02:11:21 AM
Looks like United will be playing 4-3-3 against Real Salt Lake. The starters for the first 45 minutes are:

J Pereira

Fosu-Mensah Lindelof Jones Blind

McTominay Carrick Pogba

Micki Lukaku Lingard

The weather is a bit crazy over there today apparently, they said on MUTV that they've had all 4 seasons in a few hours lol :o ;D

Looks like it's going to piss down any moment, hopefully not a storm otherwise we could end up seeing the match being abandoned.

Valencia got a straight red early on in the second half, daft decision by the ref. It was a yellow. So United played with 10 men at a high altitude, they're going to be knackered after that lol. 1-2 was the final score.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 21, 2017, 02:30:55 AM
History to be made in half an hour or so with the first Manchester derby to be played outside the UK after that one in the Far East got cancelled due to that shite pitch.

Their new keeper is making his debut too. Hopefully he's going to be just as shite as Bravo was lol. I still can't believe that Pep signed him tbh given that he previously worked with him and knew how bad a keeper he was. :-\

Here's the United side for the first half:

Dr Gea

Valencia Lindelof Smalling Blind

Micki Herrera Pogba Lingard

Lukaku Rashford

Not sure if he'll be playing 4-4-2 or whether he'll play 4-5-1 with Herrera and Pogba as the two defensive midfielders and Lukaku alone up front, probably the latter.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 21, 2017, 03:12:06 AM
Yup, 4-5-1 with Micki as the number 10, Lingard on the right and Rashford on the left.

Edersen is looking good early on, made a good save from a great effort from Herrera from distance and looks decent with crosses too. Looks like City may have solved their keeper problem, perhaps.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 21, 2017, 03:36:59 AM
Goal number 2 for Lukaku, an amazing finish from a tight angle after a howler from Edersen. I think he probably underestimated Lukaku's pace.

And 2 minutes later Rashford makes it 2-0 to United  8)
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 21, 2017, 03:49:27 AM
And that's 2-0 at halftime. An entertaining game so far, United have been the better side in the first 45 minutes but to be fair we have fielded the stronger side and are on our third pre-season friendly whereas City are playing their first.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread

United vs Real Madras in 10 minutes. Team for United:

Romero

Fosu-Mensah Bailly Jones Darmian

A Pereira Carrick Fellaini

Lingard Martial Rashford

A strong side fielded by the curried ones but this is their first game and our fourth so we should have a fitness and sharpness advantage.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread
Post by: harv on July 23, 2017, 10:50:48 PM
Martial beats 3 Madras defenders and sets up Lingard with an easy finish. 1-0 to United.

And keep your eye on the news. Real Madras have just contacted the FBI because Bale has gone missing, last seen in Timothy Fosu-Mensah's pocket :P 8)

Not a bad game so far, United have been the better side during the first half but I was expecting that due to us being 4 matches in.
Title: Re: The Pre-Season Friendly Thread

Madras have switched from having 8 Champions League Final players to giving a load of youngsters a chance. Herrera off injured and replaced by McTominay.

Hopefully he won't be out for long. Didn't look too serious though I don't think.

Haven't seen the United side yet but Barcelona are playing with practically a full strength side, Messi, Suarez and Neymar up front.

De Gea

Valencia Smalling Lindelof Blind

Carrick Pogba

Rashford Micki Lingard

Lukaku

Bailly suspended after that Europa League red card. I think that Blind is going to get torn to pieces at left back too lol

Barcelona really hitting their stride towards the end of this half but they're still looking vulnerable when United break.

1-0 at halftime, Barcelona the better side so far...particularly during that last 10 minutes. The second half should be easier for United in theory because Barcelona will make 11 subs. I reckon Maureen will make 5 or 6 at halftime.

Well that's 1-0 fulltime. Barcelona deserved to win that and on balance of play the scoreline was fair. Quite a good game, plenty of chances for both sides and United could have had a goal or two in the last 7 minutes to snatch it.

1-0 at halftime and Real Madrid deserve to go in ahead. The scoreline could have been VERY different if both Pogba and Lukaku had made sensible decisions during the first half. Oh well, only a goal in it and another 45 minutes to play.

A mixture of yoof and experience for United's first pre- season friendly against Club America. This back four is probably the back four that's going to start the season:

Grant

Valencia Bailly Smalling Shaw

Herrera McTominay  A Pereira

Mata Martial Mitchell

Mitchell is looking a bit frisky! I think he might break through into the first team this season, along with Chong and Gomes.

Here's United's team news for the game against San Jose Earthquakes:

J Pereira

Valencia Bailly Smalling Shaw

Herrera Garner A Pereira

Chong Martial Sanchez

It's looking like this back four is going to start against Leicester for the first Premiership match of the season, and Sanchez is starting soon after he got off the plane to the States.

Chong starting too after his impressive performance a few days ago. I'm really hoping that Maureen is going to take a chance on him becoming a first team regular this season. He really is something special but I think Maureen may be a bit cautious with him after he had 10 months out when his knee exploded last season.

0-0 at half-time but Bailly should have buried a chance he had and put us 1-0 up but he hit the crossbar.

Sanchez has had a good first half, Martial has been pretty much missing AGAIN. He wants to go according to reports and I wouldn't be too upset if he went tbh. Chong has had another decent game too.

Loads of changes for the second half for the Earthquakes, probably 10 or 11 changes I reckon.

And now it's 1-1. A fantastic free kick from A Pereira. That was Roy Of The Rovers stuff. He's had a great pre-season so far but I don't think he's going to see first team football, he'll end up going out on loan again.

Post by: harv on July 29, 2018, 08:54:59 PM
He hasn't done more than two seasons during his managerial career, has he? Or did he do 3 at Chelsea?

I don't think it's anything to worry about just yet. The red scouse gits had a MUCH stronger squad tbh and we had De Gea, Romero, Smalling, Jones, Lindelof, Pogba, Matic, Fellaini, Martial, Rashford and Lukaku missing.

The only first team players we had starting the match was Bailly, Herrera, McTominay, Mata and Sanchez, with Fred and Shaw on the bench.

Gomes has REALLY disappointed so far but Chong, Mitchell and Pereira have all been top class so far. Lee Grant has also impressed but not quite up to the standard of De Gea and Romero.
