So many rumours to quash/confirm..

Aye, I'll definitely be watching it - just hope the steam holds up better than the Sony one did!

Cant believe we havent had any leaks yet  :o

6 days to go!

There was a leak a week or so back from an internal Microsoft email (to all ms staff) specifying that the console does NOT require "always on" connection to function. But as with all the other leaks in the last year or so, it's meaningless until the presser when they give us confirmed details.

Yeah absolutely.. but even the PS4 had its leaks with its controller.. theres usually something that comes out a week or so before-hand that is so nailed on - its hard to ignore.. but theres nothing like that so far... nobody has a scooby what this thing will do or how it will function.. it makes me think we aren't going to see a lot next week to be honest.

6pm tonight - I think you can watch the conference live through your xbox or via the link I posted above.. cant wait!  :D

You have to download an app to watch it on your xbox, but it's a pretty short download - I got it last night.

Oops! Looks like there was some truth to that rumour that One games are 6 months behind schedule. They pretty much showed bugger all games there, and what they did show wasn't too impressive in terms of eye candy. Sony's reveal was much more impressive.

Glad that they've finally got rid of the lag from Kinect too, although I still think they should have done a Sony and cloned the remote and nunchuck. Using Kinect and the bog standard controller will be less immersive than using Kinect and remote and nunchuck type controls for FPS, TPS and any game involving the use of a sword. :-\

And I missed the first 10 minutes...why the fuck are they calling their third console One..? A bit of a shite name imo.

I was impressed, all in all. Not much shown on the games front, but it's fair enough to wait three weeks to e3.
I like the look of the console (very much a "Philips AV equipment" styling), the controller looks good (not much change from the current one), Kinect looks better (hopefully works in smaller rooms than the original version) and the interface looked very slick.

Don't think they mentioned the thorny issues of always on, or pre-owned games - but I did miss a few minutes here and there - and more info is being released to journalists/trade today.
Title: Re: Xbox 720
Post by: jman on May 21, 2013, 08:09:59 PM
They said the games would be shown at E3... 15 exclusives in the first year with 8 new IPs is pretty impressive IMO...

The presentation was more about interactive tv.. which all looks great... but not that appealing to me, at least Kinect is lag-free... which you said couldnt be done harv... Im really not that excited over the Kinect stuff.. voice activated, gesture movements.. the snap mode looked pretty funky but other than that.. meh.. half the tv stuff wont be accessible outside the USA anyway.

The controller really looks the biz though.. force-feedback through the triggers is an awesome idea, and glad they have kept the same kinda model.

The console and kinect itself look a bit square, a bit plain and the console looks bulky if Im being honest.. it looks like something that you should have under your tv ... plain and boring... at the end of the day, I wouldnt be buying it for what it looks like - I bought an original xbox!!

The specs of the console look at least on-par with the PS4 specs, so ten times better than the Wii U in any case.

I quite like the Xbox One name personally.. its One console to rule them all kind of thing lol

More worringly though - is Microsoft pretty much confirming that everything is cloud based... games will be installed on the HDD... could this spell the end for used games... not enough information at present - thats my main issue with the thing.  I suspect Sony will be doing the same though...and this will spell even more worry for the Wii U - whats the incentive to develop on that platform.

Ultimately at the end of the day - its all about the games for me and how I can play those games.. and until E3 thats a decision I cant possibly make.

I didn't say that lag free Kinect couldn't be done. The original Kinect was lag free until Microsoft took the CPU out of it to keep the cost down. It should have shipped lag free to begin with.

What I did say was going to be difficult was to have Smartglass lag free without infringing on Nintendo's patent.

That'll probably change to £449.99 when the prices are announced, I'm expecting it to be $499.99 in the States. Same with the PS4.

You'll probably find both the PS4 and One doing between 1 and 1.5m before the end of the year and struggling to sell going into the launch window and beyond. The ideal price for just about everyone would be £299.99/$299.99 but I can't see that happening considering the hardware and what's bundled in the box for each. Microsoft are in the better position to have a console priced closer to that figure because they can afford to take a bigger loss on each unit sold and a GPU pushing 1.1TFlops and 8GB of DDR3 is a great deal cheaper than a GPU pushing 1.8TFlops and 8GB of GDDR5...but bundling in an updated Kinect 2 is going to up the retail price again.

Looks like you have to pay a fee for used games (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/407912/microsoft-confirms-pre-owned-fee-for-xbox-one/). And of course this also means you can't borrow a game from a mate. Terrible decision. And with a 500GB hard drive you're going to run out of space pretty soon once games start taking up 25GB-50GB of space on discs.

What a daft decision. :o :-\ :o

Looks like I'll only be a 2 console guy this gen.

Found myself generally underwhelmed with MS's conference. "Xbox One" would be a decent name if I didn't have a HTC One.  :P Not enough games on show for my liking, but I'll keep an eye out at E3. The requirement for Kinect to be always on is a bit wank... I've got my 360 in the living room so space isn't an issue... but I just don't care about Kinect lol. The seamless switching between apps looked cool, can see our XBL subscription fees have gone to good use on the 300,000 new servers!

So I'm completely on the fence now. One problem with getting a PS4 would be that I love FIFA, and I play a lot of Ultimate Team... and that's going to be an Xbox exclusive.  :o Given what an incredible cash cow it is for EA (they bundle it with FIFA for free and made $100m off Ultimate Team in FIFA 12 alone!), MS must have chucked an insane amount of cash their way to swing it.

Always online connection...Except, it's not "always online", but you "still have to connect once within every 24 hours"...So, it IS always online then?

Also, 1 copy of 1 game per 1 console is a shocking idea...I always thought the pre-owned clamp down to that extent were just the top end rumours but they were actually true!

Yup, that's going to be a dealbreaker for a fair few people.

Both Nintendo and Sony shares have gone up after that reveal, not surprising.

Not a dealbreaker for me.. personally I can see why some people are bothered.. but if your a pc gamer, its how you've been playing games for years now..  Sony will be doing exactly the same thing - you'd be mad to think otherwise - Nintendo will be left trailing again and will suffer the consequences with developers steering clear of them and higher retail prices for their games... yep Im expecting xbox one & ps4 games to be at a pc price point.

Details are still sketchy on the whole 1 game per console thing.. if I buy a game on a console, I expect all users that originated from that console to be able to play it - thats what I'd like to see... lending to a friend Im not bothered about... I just dont do that very often anyway.. again - its something I cant do with pc games.  They have stated that the game purchaser can play their games on any console as long as they are signed in, so no problem playing a game round a friends house.

Its great they have put in plans for trading and re-selling on the Xbox One... so its not the end for pre-owned games.. Microsoft haven't gone into any details on this yet.. but at least its something!  It could spell the end for retail shops that exist mainly on pre-owned game sales though.

Kenny.. is Ultimate Team a One exclusive.. I thought he said features of Ultimate Team were.. maybe I misunderstood.

Ross.. its quite simple.. it doesnt require an always online connection.. but does require a connection in some areas.. installing games I imagine will be one of them.

Harv.. the xbox one has 500gb on its HDD - and your moaning about this - when you bought a console with what.. 32gb ?? lol.. Plus the One has USB 3.0 as standard and I imagine will support pretty much any external hard drive.  Also, zavvi would of priced higher than they thought the console will cost.. otherwise they would have to honour all £399 orders.. I personally think there will be two flavours.. and they should really aim the cheapest at a kind of £249 price point.
Title: Re: Xbox 720
Post by: harv on May 22, 2013, 10:02:42 AM
The difference between the 32GB and 500GB storage is that with the Wii U you aren't forced to install the entire contents of the Blu-Ray onto that 32GB. And I haven't made any comment of the speed of the hard drive, the speed of using the Cloud storage though is going to be an issue, particularly for those of us living in the UK which is practically a Third World country as far as internet speed is concerned. You're also going to find people installing their games onto the Cloud leaving those with bandwidth limits well and truly screwed. And if you're expecting to be able to install any hard drive to increase your storage capacity then good luck with that, you'll probably have to pay way over the odds for a proprietary again. I can't help feeling that Microsoft have included such a small hard drive for precisely that reason.

Unless they address the used games fee issue then the One is going to flop, just have a look at the gaming forums all over the place...just about everyone is going apeshit. I've seen plenty of people saying they're going to switch to the PS4 instead, even people that have been with Microsoft ever since the original Xbox was released. :o
Title: Re: Xbox 720
Post by: jman on May 22, 2013, 11:17:35 AM
I know you didnt comment on the speed.. but the Wii U only supports USB 2 - far slower than USB 3, you were quite happy with that as well ::)  Plus any external hard-drive can pretty much be used with the 360.. cant see why they would go back to using proprietary drives again - maybe you could be right - nobody knows 100% at the moment so I can only take your comments as doom mongering because you dont like microsoft.

And the people jumping ship from xbox to playstation are in for a big shock come E3 when Sony announce similar plans to microsoft in regards to used games... if the PS4 offered free online gameplay along with no fee to pay used games - then I think I'd buy one along with a lot of other gamers... its just not going to happen though - console gaming is evolving with the ps4/xone.

There is certainly a lot of nerd-rage about at the moment - no denying that... thankfully I have my own opinion about what I want and expect from a games console and theres not enough concrete information on both systems to make an informed decision - anyone making a decision at this stage is just an idiot.

My initial reaction was that 500gb was too small, too - but if you consider you don't need to keep the game installed on the hard drive if you're not playing it, then I guess 500gb should be fine. Install your game, play it for a few weeks, and a year later when you see you've not played it in 11 months and are unlikely to play it again soon uninstall it but keep the save files. You can reinstall later if you want to. Same as the current consoles, and PCs.

I've no idea if part of that 500gb is reserved for system and/or for PVR, mind. It could well be that you've only got 200gb for games - and then you might hit problems.

Looks like I'll only be a 2 console guy this gen.
I go to work all week and I'll be a 1 console guy this gen. You sit at home all day and aren't sure whether you'll have two or three consoles?
Bless. I can see why you're depressed...

True that.
I currently have no idea which way I'll go next gen. I'll have a better idea come Christmas, when we know a lot more about price, performance, and dozens of other things we still don't know about. But even then I probably won't be certain which way I'll go and will likely wait quite a while before I buy either. I want the console that best suits my requirements of course, but I also like to see which way the wind's blowing. If, after six months, one of the machines is massively outselling the other, or one is having horrendous problems with one aspect or another then that's a factor I'll consider before taking the plunge.

Title: Re: Xbox 720

Lol, I didn't say that I'll be getting a PS4 at launch or anything, I'll have to save up for a while before I can get one. I savedup for about a year to get my Wii U. I'll be waiting for a price cut, the usual Slim SKU and get it using my mate's Sony staff discount.

And I can't see Sony being daft enough to fuck about with used games. I can't believe that Microsoft have decided to do it. A very bad decision.
Title: Re: Xbox 720

Well like I said, if Sony release a console that is free to play online and allows used games to play on it for free (as per this gen) compared to the One which costs money to play online and a fee to play used games... then that will probably be an major factor in my launch choice.  At the moment, Sony have only said that any PS4 hardware is capable of playing used games.. and nothing more - take from that what you will.. but it sounds omnious that they haven't stated whether they will be a fee or not.  I also expect them to start charging for their online service in the next gen too.

The only thing I can really compare both systems on is the controller at the moment.. and the xone controller looks the business.. in fact, even if I dont get an xone.. I'd still buy the controller for the pc, the rumble triggers will be a revelation.

I can see a lot of rows starting with wives/girlfriends walking into the front room and saying "xbox off"  ;D

I'm also not sure how Kinect knows when you're gesturing to it. If you move your arms apart or together whilst talking to someone you might find your screen going batty because the machine thinks you're trying to maximise/minimise what you're watching. Wave to a neighbour and you might find your volume going up and down because it thinks you're pointing up and down. Scratch your balls and you might find the telly switches to porn because it knows that's what you usually want when you put your hand to your groin...

lol, I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday.. I get threats all the time when I should be getting off but need to find a savepoint first which takes longer than I thought.. "I'll come and turn your xbox off"... blah blah blah.. lol.. yeah - that might get annoying quite quickly...

...but then didnt they say Kinect recognises you and your voice.. so if your signed in - it will only work with your voice ? Unsure on that.

I believe Kinect can track where your looking - so maybe thats how it knows where you're gesturing.. it also works far better in much more confined spaces and can track up to 6 people now (even at just a few feet away).. The technology in that thing is absolutely outstanding going by their conference.. it can recognise where in your body you are applying and exerting pressure, it can recognise your heart-beat (although Im not convinced on this one yet), it also works in the pitch dark and is totally lag free.. its the best motion capture tech and will blow anything nintendo/sony have out of the water.....

...however, I still cant see how its going to be that useful for gaming.. well some parts will.. exercise/dancing games will be far better on the xone for instance.. and there will be a huge host of party/mini games that will work far better with Kinect... Kinect Sports 3 is a definite I think....other than that.. Im struggling to think of any other type of game where the tech will actually improve gameplay...give me a classic game with classic controls any day of the week!

Yeah, Microsoft and journos seem to be buzzing on mediaeval brawler "Ryse" where your movements dictate how you wield your sword and shield. Doesn't appeal to me at all. But time will tell.

I'm still intrigued to hear more about the upcoming Steamboxes. I maintain they've a good chance of eating into Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo(lol)'s console market shares.

Only console I'm likely to buy this year is the Ouya - and I'm still not 100% convinced on that. It's suffered another slight delay, and it can't afford delays. It's marketplace is untested. It's coming out with a Tegra 2 just as Tegra 3 is hitting the market. And there's a few rival android consoles coming out now (closest rival probably being the eStick).

Nah.. the steamboxes wont do owt to the console market.. any gamer with a pc usually has a console to play on too anyway.. thats just the way it is... I wouldnt want to limit myself to just pc games - they miss out on a lot of console greats... GTA5 hasnt even been announced for the pc yet for example...

There's loads come out for pc that don't make console, too. (It's had major problems, so Sim City is probably not the best example, but it's the first that springs to mind.) So I consider it's swings and roundabouts when it comes to what games come out on console/pc.

If a steambox costs about the same as a console, and the games are largely the same, and the resale market's the same (digital download vs physical with restricted resale) - but games cost about £40 on the consoles and about £20 on the pc then I'm definitely tempted by the pc option.

ps4/x-one comparison thoughts (http://www.edge-online.com/news/ps4-is-more-powerful-than-xbox-one-on-paper-but-microsoft-will-catch-up-says-avalanche-studios/) by Avalanche Studios, on EDGE.
No real surprises in there, tbh.
PS4 has more raw power on paper. X-one not far behind, and eminently capable of catching up with cloud infrastructure and a few other tweaks.
Sounds very similar to the ps3/xbox360 comparisons we were reading around 7 years ago, to be honest, where the ps3 was widely recognised as slightly better on paper, but most games being almost identical on the two machines.

Well Sim City is probably a terrible example for reasons other than the massive launch cock-up... mainly the fact that its made by EA who use Origin to release their games.. so Sim City and all EA games are not available to download via steam and wouldnt be available on a steam box anyway  ;D  (Thats of course if Valve lock the steambox.. i.e. tie it to just using steam.. if they let you download other apps and stuff onto the box, then its entirely possible to play games not found on steam).

But overall I think I'd much prefer console exclusives over pc exclusives.. which usually fall into three categories - MMORPGs, RPGs or Strategy Games... thats not to say I dont enjoy those games.. Strategy games are one of my favourites.. and I typically buy them on the pc for the better experience.. but I couldnt of survived this gen with just a pc and no 360...thats partly because I have bought a lot of used games.. if microsoft are going to regulate and start charging for used games themselves then I'd expect the new game price to go down.

lol - yeah, Steambox is confirmed as unlocked and open to other systems/applications :P
Can't remember if they said they're having Windows, Linux, or something else as os, but it's not a proprietary system - and you'll be able to boot into other modes than Steam Big Picture.
Or that's my understanding, anyway, from reports a few months back. Of course nothing's finalised and we're a long way from launch, so nothing's certain. But I'm in no immediate rush to buy a next gen machine, so I'm keeping Steambox in mind as a definite option.

I agree that new game prices should definitely drop if next gen consoles are to follow a similar model to pc games. "Should" is the operative word, though. As I said in my last post, if they're using a model similar to pc games but the console versions are still considerably more expensive than pc ones then steambox definitely looks a tempting alternative.
Microsoft's games next gen really shouldn't be significantly more expensive than games on Steam. Bet they are, though.

Whilst Kinect 2.0 is impressive, it's also bloody scary too.
It's constantly recording both video (at 1080) and audio, it knows who's in the room, and it knows where their eyes are pointed.
Aside from the obvious potential for marketing and voyeurism, Microsoft reportedly have patents in place to check how many people are watching a film, for instance, so they can charge extra if there's more people in the room, and patents to pause adverts if you look away from the screen...

Good luck with seeing the retail prices of games going down this gen. A lower price means less royalties on each game sold for Sony and Microsoft. Can't see that happening tbh. If anything you'll probably see games being a tenner more expensive due to development costs rising now that developers have the power under the hood to make 1080p native games possible. :-\

Going to be interesting to see what Sony do after all of this fuss over the One. They'll probably leave it up to the publishers which could see PS4 owners boycotting games. Going to be very interesting to see how this all turns out. :o

Why haven't pc game prices gone up.. and why are Wii U games the normal price then?  All games on the X1 will be available in disc and digital form.  I cant see why game prices will stay the same when they have cut the middle-man out with FULL digital downloads.. and cutting the middle-man out from used games will surely make more money for publishers.

Going to be interesting to see what Sony do after all of this fuss over the One. They'll probably leave it up to the publishers which could see PS4 owners boycotting games. Going to be very interesting to see how this all turns out. :o

Dont forget.. Sony introduced PSN Pass a few years back now.. and whilst they dont charge for single-player content on used games at the moment (and to be fair to the X1 - Microsoft have not fully confirmed anything yet)... why would they of done this if they are totally consumer-focused - this type of thing has been brewing for a long time... Sony are as money grabbing as Microsoft imo.

EA have dropped their online passes - this is enough to say to me that whatever happens... individual publishers/developers wont be implementing their own systems come the next gen... I cant see EA implementing online passes for the PS4 but not for the X1.. its going to be all down to Sony/Microsoft how they handle it.. via a fee to play the entire used game or a fee to play the online portion of a used game - hopefully it will be the latter for both companies.

PC games are cheaper because of piracy being rife on the platform. Wii U games at launch were a tenner more expensive than their PS3 and 360 counterparts. When all 3 current gen consoles are on the market you'll probably see the price of Wii U games going up too despite the platform being a great deal cheaper to develop for due to the tens of thousands of pounds of middleware and software free with each dev kit and the lower native resolution.

Rumours today that activation fee for second hand X-One games will be around £35.

If true they can stick their console up their ar$e.
(An uncomfortable proposition with any console. Probably moreso with one that's akin in size and dimensions to my first video player.)

See the image I posted above lol. :P

That can't be right, surely..? That's going to put the likes of Game, CEX, Zavvi and HMV out of business. And they're all struggling to stay afloat as it is. That has to be a load of old bollocks, even as much as a tenner would be over the top.

If that's true then the console is going to fail miserably unless it's £199.99. :o

That's not a change of plans - that's a dismissal of a rumor. A subtle but quite pertinent distinction.

Post by: jman on May 26, 2013, 02:20:55 PM
Aye, I think the rumour was from a website saying that the maximum discount on used games would be 10%.. so taking 10% of a normal £39.99 RRP gives you around £35... all of it, just pure speculation of course.  There are a lot of questions, all of them hopefully being answered at E3.. although I don't think we'll get a release date or price from either company.
Title: Re: Xbox 720

Well I think they're going to have to do something drastic, the One could end up selling much worse than the GameCube at this rate going by the result of polls. :o :-\

You mean I wont be able to play all those imported games that I've never bought for any console in the entire history of my gaming life ??  Damn!

Xbox One breaks pre-order records at Blockbuster (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/xbox-one-breaks-pre-order-records-at-blockbuster/0116237) - guess not everyone is seeing it as a complete failure.. although have to point out that the X1 could further destroy Blockbusters if some of the rumours about Microsofts policies are true

Can't understand those who are writing the console off at this stage. Nor can I understand those who are pre-ordering.

There's likely around half a year between now and release, and we'll know a LOT more about the console and about it's rival(s) in a few months' time...

Amazon have put a pre-order price for £600 on their website... thats fucking crazy... they do state they have no idea what the price will be - I guess they have learnt their lesson from underpricing the Wii U before official prices were released  ;D

Going on the little we do know - I'd go for £349.99 for X1 at launch.. and £499.99 for PS4

Edit : Theres also been retail listing for Mirrors Edge 2 for the X1 on the Germany/Italian amazon sites - I really (unexpectedly) enjoyed the first one.. so that would be an awesome launch game - and quite possibly an exclusive too.

Edit, Edit : I've actually gone back on my word.. and pre-ordered both consoles at Zavvi for £399.99 for each one - the way I see it.. I've paid no money, I can cancel whichever one I want.. I dont have to worry about missing out by not pre-ordering early and if the price of each console is revealed to be quite a bit more.. I'll get a console on the cheap (Im sure the PS4 will cost more than £400)

I reckon we'll be looking at £449.99 for both of them. The benefits of only having 8GB of DDR3 and a GPU pushing 1.2GB will be negated by having Kinect 2 bundled imo.

I missed this (http://www.oxm.co.uk/54524/historic-rare-franchise-to-be-revived-at-e3-for-xbox-one/) but Rare are apparently releasing a new game from a "historic franchise" at E3 exclusive to the X1.

Banjo-Kazooie ?? Conker ?? Killer Instinct ?? Perfect Dark ??

If its a new Banjo game... that would be a massive + for me.... but Killer Instinct is the front runner because Microsoft tried to renew its license on the name last year.

Now Asda have come out and said they have received more pre-orders for the X1 than any other console... I dont get this.. why are so many people pre-ordering when there have been barely any games shown and no pricing structure revealed?  At least I preordered both consoles and I paid no deposit.. Blockbusters and Asda both require a £20 deposit to pre-order - find it very strange... unless people are that interested in turning their tv into a smart tv.  :-\

Title: Re: Xbox 720
Post by: Late on June 04, 2013, 11:00:23 AM
That is bloody weird.
I can understand pre-orders being high at places where there's no deposit and the price is realistic looking. But putting money down six months in advance, to buy from a retailer who isn't even willing to guess at the price?
Sure, you can cancel and get your £20 back later if you want, but that seems pretty daft to me. I've no idea of the number of preorders they've had, and I doubt Asda/Walmart are short of a few quid, but it adds up the public giving them a cubic fucktonne of money for six months, for nothing.

Some official Xbox One information released today on licensing, connectivity and privacy features - Link (http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/main)

I've picked the most salient points out :

Quote
Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers.  Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.

So no fees to play used-games.. but you can only sell them to participating retailers if the publishers have enabled a trade-in feature.. so buying/selling on ebay is out of the question and the trade-in price will be determined by the retail-stores.

Quote
Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.

You cant loan games out to your friends.. but you can give them to your friends for free.. provided they have been on your friends list for 30 days.  After the initial "give", your friend cant "give" the game again.

Quote
Share access to your games with everyone inside your home: Your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games.  Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you.

Everyone can play your games on your console regardless of whether you are logged in or not.

Quote
You are in control of when Kinect sensing is On, Off or Paused: If you don’t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command -- “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you’ll need to turn it back on for these experiences.

You can turn Kinect off at will.

Quote
With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.

You need to log-in every so often to play games.  Personally I log in every time the 360 turns on automatically - this is not a massive problem for me as long as my internet doesn't die.

IMO.. this is just like steam.. except it requires more online connectivity.. but there is the possibility of trade-ins.. its not offputting to me.. but if sony offer no fee on used games and the ability to sell to anyone.. that's obviously going to be more appealing to me.

Yup, the world and his wife have been going apeshit over this since it was announced last night. I really can't believe Microsoft are killing their console launch like this.

I really can't see Sony taking a similar route after all this fuss. At the very least they'll allow games to be loaned between friends and sold used via Amazon and eBay. Otherwise I've seen plenty of people saying they're going to forget about consoles and game on their PCs instead. And if Sony leave the decision whether to allow used game sales to publishers then there's a possibility that those games will be boycotted and we could be looking at another Crash.

All of this could have serious repercussions for the industry. I can't believe that publishers and Microsoft are thinking this is going to be a good idea. The mind really does boggle. After the initial backlash when the news leaked Microsoft had the chance to change things and they've changed absolutely nothing. Unbelievable.

Really undecided now.

Most of the games I buy are pre owned. I only usually get a new game if one I'm interested in is released close to my birthday or Christmas then my dad gets it for me.

If Microsoft kill the pre owned game market then is lean towards a PS4 but then we don't know if Sony will do the same.

Hopefully we'll know more in a day or two.

I'm still more excited about the Steambox than the ps4 or xbox1 at the moment - but I don't think we'll see that for another year.

E3 should be the best we've seen in a long time, with lots of exciting news (though I'll miss Microsoft's presser as I'm commuting, I'll miss Sony's as I'll be slaying zombies, and I'll miss Nintendo's because I'm not a twelve year old girl). Looking forward to reading the highlights and watching new game trailers though!

This has to be the biggest clusterfuck of a console launch I've ever seen. Do you think they're fucking up this launch on purpose..? More info has been released on achievements, challenges & rewards.

Gamerscore carries over from the 360 (which we'd already been told), and arise from in-game Achievements - which will work in the same way as on the 360.
There are new Achievements that don't affect your gamerscore - for music and video apps etc. They'll unlock certain things.
And Challenges are another new feature. Again, they won't affect your gamerscore, but may give you rewards.

Are these the same kind of people that were panicking when Xbox Live first arrived and required a broadband connection (no dial-up modems)... to use when there were many parts of the country who didn't even have broadband at that point.

I suppose the fact that Xbox One doesn't support CRTs is another massive mistake too ??
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: jman on June 14, 2013, 02:28:16 PM
Weird.. with all these limitations and DRM functions in place.. Microsoft have seemed to confirm that if you buy a game.. you can actually share it with up to ten people so they can play it as well.. no matter where they are in the world... so if I bought a game on the X1.. and (unlikely but) if someone else on here bought an X1.. I could share any game I buy with that person if I have them added on my shared list.. and vice versa obviously... although it seems (and here's the catch).. only one person of those 10 can play the shared game at any one time, although that last part hasn't been confirmed and it could be two people playing the same game concurrently (the owner of the game and any one of their shared list)

Still, if that is true.. that's a pretty cool feature to be honest in terms of loaning and sharing games..  I'm a bit sceptical after everything that has gone down that there's not a catch in there somewhere... but we'll see.

Link (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/06/microsoft-defends-the-xbox-ones-licensing-used-game-policies/)

Quote
You'll be able to link other Xbox Live accounts as having shared access to your library when you first set up a system and will also be able to add them later on (though specific details of how you manage these relationships is still not being discussed). The only limitation, it seems, is that only one person can be playing the shared copy of a single game at any given time. All in all, this does sound like a pretty convenient feature that's more workable than simply passing discs around amongst friends who are actually in your area.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on June 14, 2013, 03:46:30 PM
That does sound good, if true.

Dibs on a position on everyone's shared list if I get the console!

Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: jman on June 14, 2013, 05:43:30 PM
Its a system selling feature if you take it at face value.  One person would buy an X1 and then encourage all their friends to get one.. so they can share games..  it just seems to good to be true and surely having such a feature would actually reduce the amount of new game sales.. which is the polar opposite of all their other restrictions and DRM.. which begs the question, why has it taken till now to get this information out to the masses and where's the catch?

Even taking it at face value.. I would automatically presume there would be some restrictions.. like everyone in your family has to have XBLG to participate.. one account/console can only be part of one family.. but even still, it would be a fantastic feature.. I would almost certainly forgive the other stuff for a feature of this form.  What I don't want to hear now is.. oh there would be a "small fee involved" or "actually, what you share is a F2P version of the game" or something stupid like that.

On the concurrent usage issue.. nothing has been confirmed, except that you will be able to play your games from any console as long as you log in, regardless of who you are sharing your library with and whose playing what.   The official guidelines say "any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time".. the ambiguity has arisen from questions such as.. OK me and my mate are playing Game A that I am sharing.. can another mate play Game B in my sharing library at the same time?

Plus I could see you being a right leecher late :P

I wouldn't take too much notice of the Xbox twitter account, they get a lot of information wrong, including that piece as they confirmed afterwards that they were referencing the 360 in that question.

The game sharing feature on the other hand still seems legit and would be a massive plus although ms fucked up their pr so much, the ps4 is definitely going to outsell it by a large majority at launch.

Its a bit of a jip that 360 accessories don't work with the Xbox One.. this includes controllers, headsets and such...considering there's a fair few changes to the controller, it hasn't really changed in its functionality so not sure why you have to replace them.  Could understand with the Dualshock 4 as there's been plenty of changes... probably the best change was to make L2 and R2 more trigger based.. I never understood why a controller needed 2 sets of bumpers instead of using natural shoulder triggers.  The touchpad just seems like an unnecessary extra though.

Still the 360 is by far the best controller around at the moment and the X1 controller looks like its managed to improve it even further.. the addition of trigger based feedback is truly next-gen...although I'm not totally sold on the Xbox Guide position change.

Apparently Microsoft are backing down on ALL its DRM policies and its used game policy!  :o

Confirmed via the official Xbox facebook feed, and various other sites but with so much information around now - its all a bit confusing still as to what is going on now.. but this is great news.. one thing that will be impacted by this is the digital sharing will no longer be a feature which is a disappointment.  Hopefully be able to find some concrete information in the morning.

But, with identical features to the PS4 and a far better game line-up... quite safe to say that I'll be getting an X1 at launch now.

Title: Re: Xbox One

So... the new policies with the Xbox One :

The console no longer needs to check in at all.. they have scrapped the whole 24hr check-in malarkey... so all offline games can be played totally offline.  You only need to be online once during system set-up and that's it.. I presume this is to download a system update to enable this function.

Used games are going to be how they are working on the 360.. so all games will require the disc in the drive to operate (unless you've bought a digital copy of a game).  This means you don't have to install your games to the hard-drive.

They also announced that the console is going to be region-free.

The notion of "Family Sharing" has been scrapped due to this, so you'll just share the game disc (instead of the proposed digital sharing) and also downloaded titles cannot be resold.

Official Statement (http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update)

This is certainly good news, whilst I do think that Microsoft were trying to push the boundaries and step into the unknown.. some of their policies just didn't make sense.  The family sharing idea sounded awesome and I'm a bit gutted that its been totally scrapped, but I guess its for the greater good - being able to still buy and play used games is exactly what I wanted.  Cancelled my PS4 pre-order this morning... apart from the lower price point, there is no other appeal now.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on June 20, 2013, 09:38:20 AM
Part of me is disappointed. I liked the idea of sharing games digitally, and I liked the idea of not needing to put the disk in the drive every time you want to play it.
But all in all, this move was absolutely necessary. I think they were going to take a massive beating next gen, until this announcement - but now they're right back in the running.

Launch Games for the X1
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
Battlefield 4
Call of Duty: Ghosts
Dead Rising 3
FIFA 14
Forza Motorsport 5
Just Dance 2014
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
LocoCycle
Madden NFL 25
NBA 2K14
NBA Live 14
Killer Instinct
Kinect Sports Rivals
Ryse: Son of Rome
Skylanders: Swap Force
Watch Dogs

Just been looking to see which ones I'd want to get

Top of the list is definitely Dead Rising 3 and I think Forza 5 and Watch Dogs would be a day one purchase too.

Killer Instinct would be launch window and I'd like to give Kinect v2 a good go.. so Sports Rivals might be a launch window purchase too

Probably get Bf4 on the PC depending on how the multiplayer is shaping up and I don't think I'll bother with AC4, haven't even played AC3 yet.

That's a pretty impressive launch lineup.

If I were getting an xbone this xmas I'd be wanting the following either at launch or pretty soon after:
Battlefield 4
Call of Duty: Ghosts
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
Forza Motorsport 5
Watch Dogs (so long as it reviews well. Looks great, but you never can be sure with a new IP).

I'd also want AC4 and Kinect Sports Rivals (and maybe DR3 & Killer Instinct) pretty soon afterward.

Not personally interested in Fifa, Dance, Loco, NFL, NBA, Ryse, or Skylanders - but they each have appeal to a lot of people. I'd imagine there's something there for just about anyone.

Yup.. one of the better launch line-ups in recent times.. pisses all over what the Wii U had.. Plus there's Titanfall, Wolfenstein and The Crew to come in Q1 as-well and they all look like the mutt's nuts.

Apart from GTA 5 and NHL 14 I'm (hopefully) not going to buy any more 360 games...the saving starts here!!!  Although come November when I have no savings.. I'll probably have to take it all in one hit lol - its the norm.

Fortunately my birthday is in November, so hoping the console releases before the 11th  :P

MS revealed today that the xb1 won't have a headset included.

You're asking us to stump up four hundred and thirty quid, and you won't even throw in your £2 headset - you'll instead sell it separately (for about £10-15?).

I understand the headset is an optional peripheral, so some wouldn't use it and some would eschew them for their premium Turtle Beaches etc. - but to not include the basic headset is just cheap.

Well Kinect does come with a built-in-microphone that can be used.. although there are distinct advantages of using a headset.  I actually haven't used mine for the 360 in ages though.. so probably wont affect me too much.. they said they were working on an adapter to get current x360 headsets to work although you'll probably have to pay for that separately as well.

Peggle 2 has been pushed back slightly - so is no longer a launch day title but is still firmly in the "launch window".

PopCap haven't given a date for it but say it'll be in December - so we're only looking at few weeks delay.

Looks like all Xbox Live Gold members will be able to stream music from Xbox Music free of charge on Xbox One (with the occasional ad).

I'm not really a music lover, but will have to check that out. I'm sure it'll be very popular with a lot of folk.

I believe the only way to play music on the ps4 is to subscribe to Sony's music service at about £5pm (i.e. it's not included in your ps+ subscription) - though that's advert free..

Just got an email from Microsoft saying they are giving me Killer Instinct for free..

Obviously the basic version of Killer Instinct is free-to-play - but they are unlocking all the characters for me... as a dedication present!!  :o  (I presume its based on how many years as an xbox live member you have been.. maybe? )

Sweet!  I was actually thinking of buying the full version.. no need now  ;D

Blimey - that's a good result!
Did MS know you're getting a One, or was it something along the lines of "if you buy a One we'll give you this"?

Edit: a few sites are reporting people getting the same email as you. And there's also reports of some folk getting free consoles!
Nothing for me, sadly :(
No official word on the criteria for being "dedicated" but it seems to be a combination of gamerscore and gold membership.

(Can I put an awful thought in your head, Kieron. Might you have been given a free console if you'd passed 100k gamerscore instead of deliberately stopping just shy of it last month?...)

Surely under such circumstances it's any bloke's duty to plant such thoughts in their friends' minds! ;)

(Incidentally, rewards seem to be based on a mixture of criteria, and I've seen reports from people with over 300k GS getting the KI characters unlocked, so being on 99980 won't really have stopped Kieron hitting the jackpot.)

lol.. I was checking neogaf and saw a few people mention they had won themselves a console.. and I already thought to myself that if the free game/console was based on 100k+ Gamerscore and years service - I would of properly done my nut in lol..  I've seen a fair few people who have higher GS than me and around the same years service not get an email at all though ??  Maybe their email was delayed - dunno... but I'd imagine there are other factors involved - # of games played/downloaded perhaps - maybe just a random factor.. I haven't got a clue - but I have pretty much dedicated my entire console gaming to the 360 this gen... so I think I deserve it  :P  and you cant beat free stuff  ;D

Just been looking on the GAME website for opening hours on launch day, I want to get there super early, pick up my games and leave... they do a early morning opening in my local store I think - I hope that means anyone can go in there at that time (i.e. not just console pre-orders only)... are you doing a midnight launch late or you waiting till the morning/afternoon?
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on November 13, 2013, 12:13:04 PM
The plan was to get it at midnight Thursday night and be off on the Friday.
(I wasn't certain it was opening at midnight but I assumed so. Have just checked the list/u] (http://instore.game.co.uk/midnight-launches/#XB1_link) and confirmed.)
Probably get a second controller and a copy of COD at the same time, if possible.

As I'm out of hols I'm not sure, though. If I go for the midnight launch I might not actually get out of there with it until after 12.30 (I've no idea), and it's a 20 minute drive home. Then say half an hour to set it up (unbox, move av equipment around, etc.). And probably a 20 minute mandatory day one system patch. And then download Forza (half an hour, rough guess?). There's a good chance I'll be fannying about until gone 2 or 3am, and then not actually get it played.
On the bright side I'd get to play with it at 6pm on Friday.

Alternative option is to pick it up on the way home from work Friday and do all the fannying around on the evening. Probably makes more sense to do that, but it means I ain't playing on my new toy until late evening. (And when has "making sense" come into the equation when buying a day one xb1?)

All my hopes rest on the courier getting to my house nice and early.. I swear if zavvi are even a day late getting my X1 to me, I shall not use them again.

Looks like Lego Marvel has been delayed on the X1 - but not other platforms.. sorry late!

Was surprised to hear "Injustice: Gods Among Us" is coming to ps4 but not to xb1.
I've got the GOTY edition for xb360 pre-ordered. Would've considered getting xb1 version instead (if it were a reasonable price).
Annoyingly, it's available for a really good price on ps4, which just compounds the frustration.

I got my Wii U from Zavvi on launch day without a problem so you should be okay. The only problems with delivery from Zavvi have been with software, not hardware. For some strange reason they seem completely unaware of the correct launch dates of some games. Very odd.
Title: Re: Xbox One

Yeah, well just a bit wary pre-ordering hardware online after getting burnt with amazon and their monumental fuck-up with pre-orders on the 360.. I was a massive amazon user at the time.. but after that incident, I stopped buying from them for about 5 years.. and only in the last few years have I ordered a few bits from them but I always look around first if amazon seems to be the cheapest, I don't mind paying a little bit extra if it means I don't have to use them.

Just heard Halo Spartan Assault (the windows mobile/pc) top down twin shooter is coming to X1/X360 on digital download.. will definitely be getting that.. love twin shooters and love halo.. so I should enjoy it.. all the reviews blast the mobile version for having shit controls.. but that shouldn't translate to the consoles where dual-analogues are king for this type of game.

If picking up an xbox One at a Game midnight launch I hear the following offers will be on:

Fighter Within half price £25
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes half price £25 (game has been delayed but i hear will be honoured)
Call of Duty: Ghosts for £40 (or free if you trade in a current-gen version of Ghosts previously purchased at GAME)
£10 off a number of games (Forza Motorsport 5, Dead Rising 3, Ryse: Son of Rome, FIFA 14, Battlefield 4, Need For Speed: Rivals, NBA 2K14, Madden NFL 25)
£10 off a 12 Month Xbox LIVE Day One Edition Subscription.
Reduced price BluRays (£12.99 each: The Wolverine, Man Of Steel, Despicable Me 2, Kick-Ass 2, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Pacific Rim.)

Possibly other deals. I'm not sure whether these deals are set in stone or just rumour but I've seen mention in a couple of places.

You might want to avoid Ryse,  I've heard nothing but negative feedback regarding the combat. I had my doubts about it when I saw the first reveal of the game. A real shame because it really could have been seven shades of awesome :(

Really pisses me off that what could be great games are completely fucked up by shite design decisions. >:( But of course you need a design degree to be a games designer...right..? Right..? :o ::)
Title: Re: Xbox One

Ryse has always looked crap.

If the offer is correct I can see me buying COD for £40 and reserving Lego Marvel (to pick up a week or so later) for £25.

The other games don't much excite me, and I ain't paying £13 for a BD. I'll end up buying Man of Steel and Kick Ass 2 but only when they're about £6. And I'm sorted for my live Gold subs until approx Sept 2014, so don't need that. I hear they're throwing in £5 of MS credit if you buy subs, but that's not a deal if their stickered price is RRP.

Let me know if you hear those deals are concrete late... £10 off Forza and DR3 might be worth staying up for!

Personally I think Ryse "looks" pretty awesome, amazing in fact.... the gameplay on the other hand is what is putting me off actually buying it.. I don't think the demo did it any justice whatsoever by showing so many QTE - I would give it the benefit of the doubt in that aspect as its only the finishing moves that require a QTE, I heard the combat has more in line with batman combat than anything else.. its the linearity of the game that is offputting and would bore me stiff, offering little to zero replayability -  which is not what I want from a launch game.. saying that, that comment was from a preview of the early 2 stages of the game so if the reviews come in and suggest the game is far more expansive and open later on - I could be tempted to buy it.

To be fair, the graphics look very good.
But as I posted elsewhere: "Looks like it plays similar to the freeflow sidegame thing from the Arkham games [I love the game but don't like the freeflow combat], but with QTEs thrown in, and some shifting maps. Spike pits etc. sound reasonable to put into a Roman arena (I'm not sure if they really had them, but they're often in films etc. and they do actually add something) but the arena shifting to a swamp or jungle at the press of a button by the Caesar? Behave yourself!..."
Has never appealed from the moment I first heard about it, and it's only gone downhill since then, for me.
I hope I'm wrong and it's great, though.

Popped into Game on my way home today.
The deals are confirmed, and only apply if buying a console at the same time.

My preorder is now amended to:
Xbox One day one edition with Forza £429.99
Call of Duty Ghosts £40.00
Lego Marvel £25.00

I've been told I can get it at midnight (or any time thereafter) but to speed it up I can pay on Wed or Thurs if I want - which will mean I can pretty much be straight in and out.

Looks like Lego Marvel isn't delayed after all.. releases on the 29th in Europe - £25 is a pretty good deal - I'd of probably been tempted myself as you could easily flog it on afterwards for £40+ on ebay.

My launch day order is
£400 - Xbox One, Day One Console + Fifa 14
£50 - Dead Rising 3
£50 - Forza 5
£Free - Killer Instinct  :P

Console is paid for.. put a £5 deposit on DR3 already and got £55 left over on my game card.. so I've basically got £40 left to pay for Forza 5.. I was debating whether to get Zoo Tycoon at the same time - but I think that would be taking it a bit too far as I'll have plenty to play through.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on November 15, 2013, 11:13:29 AM
I was told Lego Marvel would probably be a week after the console's release. I assume I'll pay for it on the 22nd and pick it up when it's available. Works fine for me. I'm sure Forza and COD will tide me over ;)

I think I'll have about £20* left on my gift/rewards after buying my bundle. Won't get anything else that day, but will probably get a second controller or another game within a fortnight.
I'm tempted by Zoo Tycoon. Doesn't look the most outstanding of games or something I'd normally go for, but it's something a bit different, it puts Kinect to good use, I'd play it (and probably enjoy it), and the wife and kids might love it.
We'll see how the reviews go.

*Give or take a tenner or so. I lose track, as I've used the card to buy SR4 t'other week (I don't think I've used it for anything else, but I might have) and I'm not sure how many reward points etc. I'll get next week.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on November 18, 2013, 04:34:22 PM
Mixed reports that Lego Marvel might not be delayed, now.
No biggie if it is, tbh. I'll have enough to keep me busy if that game's released a week late, and I pretty much drive past the branch of Game I'm getting it from on my commute.

Toying with getting Assassin's Creed. I usually wait until the AC games are about £20 before taking the plunge, but this one's getting rave reviews - and I doubt we'll see next gen versions dropping in price that quickly. So I might be best off getting it for a tenner off on launch day if possible.
Decisions, decisions.
I should probably leave it. I've pretty much used up all my credit and I've not yet got a second controller or a game that properly utilises Kinect.

Have arranged to leave work half an hour early on Friday. Avoiding the rush hour should save me a fair bit of time in my commute, so hopefully I'll be home about 5.00-5.15 instead of 6.00.
I still intend picking up the machine at midnight. Probably won't get much (or any) play on it that night, but I should hopefully be able to get it all set up - so that I'm good to go when I get home, instead of fannying about setting it up for a while and not actually gaming until 9pm or something...

Annoyingly, the wife and one of the kids will both be home all day Friday. I get my new toy and go to work while those two are home and not all that interested in it. FML.

If you get it a day early I'll be well jealous! :(  ;)
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: jman on November 20, 2013, 12:02:41 PM
lol, no chance of that, I can see the parcel status and apparently its sitting at the Zavvi depot awaiting yodel to pick it up.. and even if they try to deliver it tomorrow I'll be at work.. so I wont get it until Friday at the earliest... but another worrying sign is that on the Zavvi order it says it will arrive "On or before 25th November"  :o .. like I said previously.. Zavvi have a chance here.. and now they have despatched it.. even if Yodel fucks it up, I wont be using Zavvi again (nor any of The Hut Group subsidiaries).

The last two things I ordered from companies that used Yodel, one package was chucked into the middle of my garden (and no card was left) - didn't realise until the next day (after it had rained) - luckily it wasn't damaged from the rain or the drop because it was thrown around 10 feet from about 6 feet up and there is no way the courier knew what was inside it.. the other I paid for next day delivery and despite the company sending it out that day, it sat with Yodel for a week and when he eventually turned up I told him to sod off and refused delivery, so I complained, heard nothing back - so haven't used that company again.  I think that last time was about 1 & 1/2 years ago though.. so I hope they have improved since !!

So it looks like there will be a 2GB update on day one.. you can do this before-hand by saving it to a USB stick to speed up the process - Instructions Here (http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/system/emergency-offline-update) - although it seems a bit convoluted so I dont think I'll bother, I think what I will do is wait in until the courier turns up (if they turn up) - then download the update and nip out to game to pick up DR3 and Forza.

What game am I going to play first.. I haven't got a clue.. just so excited.. it'll probably be Forza though as it looks absolutely amazing... probably play it for a few hours before I swap over to DR3.. then give KI a go later on and make sure I download the Kinect Sports Rivals demo to give Kinect 2.0 a good seeing to.. also I cant wait to play around with the snap features...I can see myself getting a lot of use out of snapping tv and game in one window.. my tv does already support PIP but not between two different HDMI outputs

Edit : Forgot I have Fifa 14 aswell.. will probably have a little go on that.. but it certainly wont be my priority.

I still don't know if my Forza will be digital download or disk.
I assumed it'd be digital, like FIFA, but the Game website indicates it might be a disk. I asked when I was instore last week and the lad said he's not sure either.
TBH I'm easy either way. If it's disk it means I can get straight to playing it when I get the console set up, rather than waiting for 4 or 5 gig to download. Also means I can sell the game later if I want.
If it's digital it means I should be able to switch from COD to Forza with one voice command, and not have to get off my lazy backside and change disks.
Swings and roundabouts really!

I'll let the machine sort it's day one update out itself. It'd be nice to get it downloaded early to speed things along, but I can't be arsed with that.

Can't wait. 13 hours from now I'll be pulling my car into the big trading estate where Game is located, whilst scanning the area for ne'r-do-wells. (Those lads sat in that car. Have they paid for a One, or are they looking to mug someone? Good luck - I'll take on all four of you to protect my games console!)

The amazon bundle with Forza comes with a download code - so I imagine its the same.

I cant wait to try out the voice commands.. shouting out "Xbox - change my pants" - when I've been festering on the sofa for the next couple of days.. and "Xbox - make my dinner", "Xbox - iron my clothes".. to be fair, if you substitute Xbox with my missus name.. I'll probably get the same response lol.

As someone pointed out elsewhere, probably best to have that downloaded just in case. The servers might be a bit busy tomorrow.

Yup, and you can't do bugger all with the console until that update is done apparently. At least with the Wii U you could play a game whilst it downloads in the background. That's the price to pay for that 180 I guess, and well worth paying even though it's inconvenient.

Post by: Late on November 22, 2013, 09:47:02 AM
Got home with my console around 1.10am.
Setting it up went as smooth as you like, as did bringing over my gamertag etc.
The day one update was smaller than expected (varying reports said 1.2gb - 2.0gb but it was only 500mb) but it took about half an hour - I guess the servers are taking a bit of a hammering.

My copy of Forza is physical disk. I also bought COD on disk, and I have Lego Marvel ordered - but that won't be available for about a week. All disks appear to have a mandatory installation to HDD. I think the installation for Forza was about 5gb but I wasn't paying attention tbh - was busy buggering about with customising profile etc. You can't play the game straight away, but when it was partly installed (about 35%? rough guess (a few minutes) - again I was preoccupied so never paid attention to the game installation) it flashed up a message saying it's okay to play now and the rest will install in the background.
Played the first three races, but it was about 3.30am by then and my back was aching from the little bit of crawling around behind the tv - and from carrying the console, which is heavier than expected - so I decided to call it a night. I ejected the Forza disk and put the COD disk in to start that installing to HDD so that I'm good to go on both games tonight. I then got messages telling me to put the Forza disk back in as it was still installing. D'oh! Ah well, I'll sort it all out tonight.

I think I'll get a wall mount (or shelf) for the kinect. I have it in front of the tv at present, and it works okay - but having it further back against the wall will allow it to see more of the room.
Also need to have a play about with the hdmi-in options. Will probably feed my Sky in, but might feed in the media player instead.
Controller's good, but will take a bit of getting used to. The thumbsticks are smaller than on the 360, but have a great feel and grip to them. The feedback in the triggers is great. The bumpers and face buttons are fractionally off where they used to be, but I'll get used to them in no time.

Voice control is a bit iffy on occasion, early impression. Not sure if it's my accent, the room setup, my being a bit quiet because the family were asleep, or just me getting used to asking the right things, but a couple of times it did the wrong thing and a few times it didn't seem to recognise my commands at all.

Of course I only had a fairly quick play with it all, and it'll be a different story in a few days' time.

I can confirm, though, that saying "xbox on" and watching the console turn on and go to your personal homescreen is pretty much the most awesome thing ever.

Yesterday I got 100 cigs, three hundred cans of coke, a dozen tubes of pringles, and filled the car's petrol tank up.

lmao..  ;D

Absolutely pointless taking a days holiday.. by the time I've got it, set it all up, gone and bought my games, come home and downloaded them.. it'll easily be going home time.

Parcel was received by the local delivery courier at 09:09 - and still I wait  :(

Believe me, you don't want to be at work right now.
Being at home setting it all up through the day definitely beats getting home from work and making a start on it all at about 6pm.
And getting it set up doesn't really take all that long. 15 mins to unbox and plug it all in, then half an hour or so of mandatory day one download (while you pop down the shops - don't worry, you don't need to be there and click continue etc. throughout).
If the delivery driver turns up soon you could be up and running and playing games by lunchtime.

Time to set Fifa/KI download going and get down to GAME!!

Congrats Kieron! :D

Can't believe how fast that update went for you. Are you wired directly into the Microsoft servers?
One of the lads I've been speaking with said he's just done his and it took 45 minutes.

One of the kids was around as I set it up last night, so I got her set up on the console too. (She couldn't remember her email addy and password from the xb360 so had to make a new account, but that's by-the-by.)
Anyways, when we were both set up we spent a while just farting around with voice controls - primarily "xbox, show my stuff" and watching it switch from my homepage to hers, and back again :D

You didn't happen to pick the Hyundai Genesis with the flame design in Forza did you late??  Well I picked that car/design (mainly because I drive a Hyundai coupe myself).. and your drivatar I just raced against used the exact same one!!

You'll be pleased to know, I absolutely cained yours and everyone elses drivatar in my first race ;D ;D

I love next gen!!

lol - yes indeed I did! About ten starter cars to pick from, each with dozens of designs, and we picked the exact same one, lol.
That's so cool it used my car and style for you to race against :D
Of course when I race you for real I'll kick your arse.
(Okay, probably not, as I'm not very good at driving games.)
I did come first in all three races I did - but I used rewind on two of them after major crashes... :-[

You got your console yet Kenny?
If memory serves you were getting the Forza pack from ShopTo?
A workmate of mine got the same pack from there, and it's being delivered between 3.16 and 4.16 this afternoon.

I feel for the poor sod who comes up against my drivatar... so many times I have just smashed my way round corners and stuff lol...

I've just finished the first championship.. finished 1st in all but one - I finished 3rd in that one.. but I had messed around with the assists/drivatar ability - and it took one race to get used to no assisted braking!!

Its only just finished installing (it took its sweet time), so I've just stuck DR3 in to install and will give that a whirl...

No email/message from Microsoft yet about my free KI.. but got several things queued up to download already.. I absolutely fucking love the fact I can hold my QR code up to Kinect (instead of having to input a code) to register my downloads and stuff.. its so cool.

I had tried the controller previously, but getting more to grips with it and I love it even more than the 360 controller.. its smaller, but feels so much better, rumble in the triggers - amazing.

Talking to your console as in "Xbox - do this" seems strange at first, but it is pretty quick and easier.. I think if you are having trouble with the voice recognition, its easy to just say xbox and pause for a sec for the (Stop Listening) box to come up - before you tell it what to do... to be honest, I had a few times where it didn't do what I said, but it seems to of sorted itself out now and besides me shouting out the wrong commands, its doing everything just dandy!

Ditto. I've just been on the xbox One store (https://store.xbox.com/en-GB/Xbox-One/Games/) on the office pc, and have told it to download Killer Instinct and Xbox Fitness to my console. Might as well get the machine doing some of this stuff while I'm out of the house :D

I haven't looked at setting up my TV options on the console at all yet. I did see the option last night, but swerved it at the time.
I don't think we have much functionality in the UK on that side of things, yet, so you're not missing much. You could possibly feed a freeview box into the HDMI-in if it's not doing anything else, but I doubt you'd get much benefit from doing so.
I'll be experimenting with mine over the weekend - will let you know how it goes. I plan on trying my little media player device, and my Sky+HD.
TBH I'm not expecting much. As far as I can see it's just putting an extra (completely unnecessary) middle-man into my set-up, but time will tell.

I absolutely shit myself in the first 10 minutes of Dead Rising 3... the first jump scene.. just was not expecting it at all... to be honest, I didn't play it for very long.. I will get some more time on it over the weekend... graphics are like high end 360 graphics - so nothing to shout about, but its certainly got tension to it already.

I love Forza 5 though, it is a piece of fucking beauty, the controller feedback is amazing and the drivatar stuff is brilliant.. cant believe its only tracking at an average of 82 on metacritic... its telling in the user reviews that pretty much everyone has given it a 9/10 or a 0 .. lol some people are too sad for words.

I'm also pretty impressed with Killer Instinct although I always have problems with the longevity of fighting games.. and with no actual campaign/story mode in it, I think this will struggle to stay in my recent played games.

Fifa 14.. is just fifa.. it looks pretty, it plays nicely.. but I bore it of way too easily..

Kinect Sports Rivals - I can see this being a LOT of fun when the full version releases, the wake racing in the demo plays really nicely - very much like waverace 64 with some nice graphics - and its great that I can play it sitting down, although my arms starting aching after about 2 go's on it.

I downloaded Xbox Fitness but haven't played it yet.. I decided to get a Play And Charge kit today instead of Zoo Tycoon - but that's going on my xmas list.

I cant seem to get "Xbox - On" working :(  lol - I just sound like a twat, sitting there trying to get it to work instead of using the controller - it is on the correct power mode  :-\

Leaving a slight pause between 'Xbox' and your command worked well for me - expect when turning it on. A short 'Xbox on' works best for me.

Voice controls keep coming on without prompting on YouTube, which is very irritating.

The Wii U had a successful launch, it was the launch window and beyond that were dodgy due to its software drought. Super Mario 3D World should boost sales significantly and they have plenty lined up early next year to keep sales momentum after Christmas, including the sales beast that it Mario Kart 8. The Wii U is going to be fine.

I want an "Xbox eject disk" option. Can't understand why it's not there.

Have got sky plugged into my HDMI in now - and I like it. It's nowhere near as good as it should be (ie how the yanks have it) but it means I can switch from game to app to TV. Can't control my Sky or bring up the TV guide with voice controls but it's limited functionality is still pretty cool - and means my Xbox will now be turned on whenever the TV is on.

Playing cod earlier (search and destroy, as always) I could snap or switch to TV between games or whilst waiting to respawn by simple voice controls.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on November 24, 2013, 02:48:32 PM
Have slightly rejigged my Xbox One inputs, Harmony remote, etc.
I now have Sky+HD , Cyclone media player, and (a now totally defunct) Philips BD player all going into a 3-in-1 HDMI switcher, which goes into the Xbox One's HDMI-in.

If I press the "watch TV" activity button on my remote it powers on the TV, the Xbox One, and the Sky, and turns off everything else. TV at that point is on a large tile on the One's dashboard and can be full-screened with a voice command or a press of a button on the Xbox controller (though the controller would need to be turned on first). Could probably also be full-screened by gesture but I've not really played much with gesture controls yet.

If I press the "watch film" activity button (I use "watch film" as a catchall for watching TV and film from portable hard drive via Cyclone media player) it powers up the TV, the Xbox One, and the media player, and turns off everything else.

End result - whatever I'm doing the One is turned on and everything goes through it. Whether I'm watching telly or watching something I've downloaded I can instantly access any Xbox one function - be it playing games, browsing the internet, YouTube, Skype, or whatever. I've noticed no problems with latency etc.
Voice command over the tv and media player are pretty much limited to volume control (mute, volume up, volume down) - so just some limited control over the TV but no control over the satellite decoder/PVR nor the media player.
TV guide, changing channel, scrolling through hdd, fast forward etc are all done by remote control.

As mentioned above, the separate bluray player is fairly redundant now (though it does mean I can have a game disk and a bluray disk simultaneously accessible). I'm toying with getting rid of the bluray player and plugging in either my Xbox 360 or a ps3 (I don't have a ps3 but I'm tempted) to the third slot on my HDMI switcher.
Not sure if I can be logged in on the 360 and the One  simultaneously, but I'd imagine it's fine. Might get messy if I'm sent a message from another Xbox, mind, and try to display it on both the 360 and on the One it's feeding through.

Still getting to grips with the new layout etc...

I have scanned the QR code in for my Day One achievement. Where can I actually see it? And how do I see it on my friends' profiles, if they have it?
Edit - turns out I hadn't put the code in correctly. Have rescanned it and it's showing fine now.

Also, what's the green circle above my gamerscore about? I have a green circle with a six in it. I've seen other numbers on other peoples' profiles but I've no idea what it's supposed to signify.
Edit - might be how many years of gold you've had.

Yep looks like its xbox live tenure.. although personally I haven't even noticed it..

..wish I wasn't feeling so shit.. I've hardly had any time on the X1 this weekend... in the time I did have, I played a bit more of DR3 - the thing I hate with that game is that I just want to collect everything.. and always feel rushed with the time limit... I feel like I want to start the game again as I've already pissed up so much time up the wall just messing around... there seems to be shit loads of zombies this time around.. in one section I couldn't quite believe how many zombies they had on screen at once.. chucked a couple of grenades and killed a few hundred... there was still no way through though...then I realised I had to jump from car roof to car roof to get past... then I found a vehicle and absolutely smashed my way through hordes of zombies - its great fun.. but I feel rushed all the time.. I love and hate playing Dead Rising at the same time, its a weird feeling.

Realised that Ultimate Team on Fifa this year allows single player seasons - which is great.. about time they introduced that.. to be honest, I get so sick of playing Be A Pro on Fifa.. its nice that there's a half decent single player alternative now.

Managed to stream some stuff from my pc to the X1 the other day too, there isn't an app available to do this via the X1 at the moment, so I was worried I wouldn't be able to do this, but if you have Windows Media Centre on your pc, you can just stream the files directly to the device.  I need to sort out my notifications, I don't seem to get any popups when friends come online, plus I set my colour as Blue.. and I don't like the fact the achievements come up in the colour you pick.. just my OCD, but I'm picking green tonight so it looks the same as the 360  ;D  Will probably play a bit of Forza tonight if you fancy testing out an online game late?

I'll be showing as online all evening and into the early hours, but the wife and kids will be watching telly for much of that.
Best for me is between 6.00 and 7.30 and then any time after about 10.30. (If you're only available in that intervening time message me and I'll get the wife to go hoover the oven or something ;) )

I usually get to play between 4:30 - 7ish.. sometimes later depending on what time the missus gets home.. I think she said she'll be home before 6 today.. but similarly, I can get mine to go iron something for a while.. I'll be having a fairly early night tonight I reckon as I feel like shit, so if you can get on between 6:00-7:30, just set up a party/session and invite me in.

Our lass is usually home before me, but it's stock-take at her work today so she has to stop back a while. :D
(Either that or she's having an affair with her boss. Either way, she's out of the way for a while so it's all good.)

Ordered a second controller today. Still a bit more than I wanted to pay, but greenmangaming (http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/gb/en/xbox-one/games/accessories/xbox-one-wireless-controller/)'s £39.99 is the best price around (aside from a possible deal at "24studio" (http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/xbox-one-wireless-controller-35-99-24-studio-1706496) - which I avoided due to bad customer feedback).

Dat next-generation crowd in Forza 5 (http://i.picpar.com/rN0.png) :o

They would have been better off with either no crowd at all or having poly models. What an odd (and shite) design decision. :-\

Yeah, it's not great. ;D  That said, you rarely get near the crowds nor go slow enough to see them. You can see he's in photo mode there, and has contrived to get as close to the crowd as possible, plus he's used zoom - and of course he's used the most extreme example of character duplication he could find, to emphasise his point.
Definitely not ideal though.

Yup, he did precede that one with two fantastic screenshots so he was just having a bit of a laugh but there's no way that a game with that sort of budget behind it should look like that. The Producer should have known full well that this sort of quality isn't gooddenough.

Killzone is looking absolutely gobsmackingly good in terms of eye candy. Killzone and Super Mario 3D World are definitely the best two games featured in the next-generation screenshots thread so far, although to be fair Microsoft's inexplicable decision not to have a screenshot tool for the One isn't doing it any favours, nor is their dodgy upscaler either. The crushed blacks and sharpness filter isn't doing One screenshots any favours at all for those few people that have a capture card.

Peggle 2 bought. Hopefully it's downloading now. (I'm at work.)

£9.99 on the UK marketplace (https://store.xbox.com/en-GB/)
It's $11.99 Stateside, which is about £7.35 sterling, or £8.82 including VAT, so we're only paying about a quid more than the yanks.

1.72 GB, so shouldn't take too long to download.

Online integration for consoles is one of the worst things to happen in the industry in a way. Years ago releasing a game with Class A bugs was unthinkable but now it's common practice. :(

I've crashed The Last Of Us twice so far and had to restart the game once too, which technically is a Class B bug but whenever I added them to the database I always bunged them in as a Class A because having to restart the game is just as bad as a crash imo. Most Leads agree with it, some don't.

Turns out there's only six masters in the new Peggle. That's a bit disappointing.
And no leaderboards - which is just baffling considering it's a score-attack game.

Still loving it, though :D - despite it still crashing from time to time. Has happened to me (twice), the wife (three times), and one of the kids (once) now.

___________________________________

Congrats to Microsoft, who have finally released some sales figures. The console has shifted over 2 million units in it's first 18 days.
Not bad at all!

The ps4 shifted 2.1m in it's first 18 days - but had only been out in NA for the first 14 of those days.
It's about as fair a comparison as you can get, really, given the differing release schedules.

Clearly Microsoft is behind Sony - but it's much much closer than I'd been expecting. I was sure the Sony would outsell the One by at least 2:1, and feared it might actually be much worse than that.

Prehaps you underestimated how many disgruntled Wii U owners there were.. who had to buy another console, just to play some new games ;)

I've only got to the 2nd master on Peggle.. Jeff - he's fucking brilliant! lol

Love the music, art, and gameplay - I heard they had cut the # of masters down.. and whilst it is slightly disappointing, I personally thought there were a least 2 or 3 totally naff masters in the first game that I never played with.. unfortunately Bjorn was one of them lol.. but the flower and pyramid ones also spring to mind.

One thing I don't like is the fucking Xbox game-clip recorded pop-up that seems to come up all the time for me.. is there a way to turn that off - unless I specifically say Xbox Record That.. stop with the recording already - its also annoying on fifa, which seems to record every volley you attempt  ::)

Got my first dashboard reset on Peggle 2 last night  :-\  Like you said, its no biggy... how far are you through then late?  I've completed the first 3 sets of 10 trials - I really enjoy the trials, but finding them a bit easy (compared to the challenges in the first game) - not sure how many rainbows I have overall, will check tonight.  The last set of levels are bloody hard compared to the rest of the levels though.

I've done all 60 regular levels, and I think I'm a little under half-way through the bonus stages.

I agree Luna's crap. I've got one or two rainbow objectives on most levels for most masters, but on hers I've probably only got one or two from the ten levels combined. :(
One of the achievements I got yesterday was for number of rainbows, but I can't remember how many it was (possibly 60?) - and it seems you can't check xbox one achievements on xbox.com - just xbox360 achievements. Unless I'm missing something - which is entirely possible.

I plan on finishing the bonus levels then going back for rainbows - most of which should be fairly straightforward for the first 3 or 4 masters.
You don't need to get all three objectives at once, and you don't need to complete the level for some of them. (ie if you need 400k score, clear all pegs, and get a long-shot on a level and you already have the first two then I think you can start the level, do a longshot, then back out and all three will be ticked. Of course for most you'll have to do the full level though, as the missing objectives are often highscore or clear all pegs.)

Lego Marvel reset to dash yesterday. It's the only time it's done it in dozens of hours of play, so not much of a problem - but it's a little worrying that two games have now done it.

Yeah the crashing to Home thing is most certainly a software issue - otherwise your X1 would freeze up... plus I have played Forza more than anything and not had a single reset... I hope developers get it sorted soon - I can only begin to imagine how annoying it would be in other games that don't have as much auto-save as peggle 2 lol.

Sounds like your at the same kind of progress as I am.. done all 60 levels and 30 bonus levels.. I don't think I have 60 rainbows yet though lol.  I think the thing with Luna is that you have to play drastically different with her than the others.. but her power is just not strong enough for her levels + her power doesn't adapt well to many other levels.

I do love this game though, it will be my first X1 100% game.. yeah the sooner Microsoft sort out the xbox website to recogonise X1 games the better

Post by: Late on December 16, 2013, 01:28:23 PM
With some levels/masters you're better off activating their power early in the level, and with some you're best waiting until near the end - but with Luna I just can't find a good time.
I intend getting 100% on Peggle and Lego Marvel, but Luna may well prevent me getting it on Peggle. I find her levels completely infuriating.

I wouldn't worry about the crashes, launch software is a bloody nightmare to test due to constant changes to hardware and SDKs. Software launched after the launch window will be much more stable.

Have just done a couple of yoga exercises with Wii Fit U and it was pretty painful lol :-[ ;D

Just hit the achievement for 90 rainbows.. done all the trials now... some of the challenges on the normal level are an absolute bitch and the game reset bug just exacerbates my frustration  >:(  I haven't even touched the luna/celestial levels yet..

Think I'm on about 138 rainbows now.. nearly completed the first 3 levels in their entirety.. the Luna ones are relatively easy to be honest as you don't have to use her... but the last set of levels.. the Celestial ones are pissing hard!!

Gnorman is my character of choice.. best skill for most levels.. except if there are load of single pegs on the level, then Berg comes into play... Bjorn is great for getting the trick shot ones, Luna is garbage, Jeff - whilst being awesome isn't that useful for most either.

Yeah, I'm in a similar position. I've got between 27/30 and 30/30 rainbows for all five masters, and got an achievement for 150 late yesterday, but haven't made much headway on the Celestial ones yet.
Gnorman's the bomb. I use him about 95% of the time. Main reason for using the others is just to see their animations and new skins when unlocked.

Hahaa.. knew you'd want to catch up after lagging behind so badly, I'm trying to hit 150 before tomorrow because I'm going to get next to no time on my X1 over the xmas/new year period so great chance to beat me to the 100% there ;)

I tried to do some multiplayer the other day, but just got a game loading screen for ages before it chucked me out the lobby
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on December 23, 2013, 12:05:10 PM
Haven't tried multiplayer yet, and probably won't bother.
I got my arse into gear when I saw you'd got the achievement for 120 rainbows. I was on close, so got the achievement about 40 minutes after you.
Haven't played Lego Marvel in about a week, but am looking forward to getting back to it. Could be my favourite Lego game - it's spot on. Have finished the story, and am working my way through gold bricks and extra characters on the map. I'd say I'm less than 50% of the way through the game - but it's still fun, whereas LOTR was a chore by this point.

Need to get back to COD at some point, too. It's decent, but not the best COD they've done.

Really should try to get through some of the xb360 backlog at some point, too.

Will be out pretty much all day Christmas Day, and half of Boxing Day, but aside from that I anticipate spending most of the next week playing games. :D

For some very strange reason, I woke up at 5:55am this morning.. couldn't get back to sleep so just sat and played Peggle 2 for a bit.. made 150 - although progress is going very slow now lol.  30 on first 2 levels, 28 on next 2, 22 on luna and 12 on celestial  :-\ lol

Also I downloaded Halo : Spartan Assault to my X1 from my pc at work, expecting it to be installed when I got home.. but it wasn't..  :-\  I thought if I downloaded it, it would install automagically :(
Title: Re: Xbox One

Yeah, I had the same with Peggle 2. Bought it while at work and it downloaded to the One but didn't install until I told it to.
Might be possible to install it remotely but I've not looked into it (perhaps smartglass?).

Am also moving very slowly on Peggle objectives now. Played for a while last night but only moved from 150 to about 155.

175/180 rainbows on Peggle 2 now, and just about ready to give up on the remaining five.
Remaining:
Berg 5,
Berg 10,
Gnorman 5,
Gnorman 7,
Celestial 5.

Just one more rainbow, beginning to piss me off now, seen you've 100%ed it late, how did you do celestial 6, ace score, I can't get near it, I don't know whether to use gnorman or Luna, I've grown a fondness for her now and used her a lot over the celestial ones, if you can save a green until you are on 10x, you can rack up a shitload of points on a good level
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on December 28, 2013, 09:38:33 PM
The last few were a chore. Haven't had a look at the level you're struggling with but you can rack up ridiculous scores (over a mil) if you clear half the screen with Gnorman then pick the others off one by one by skimming the very edge of them and going straight into the bucket. It's tedious and frustrating playing that way though.

PS4 has sold 4.2m, the Wii U should be around 5m. We'll find out at the end of the month during Nintendo's investor's meeting. But you've got to remember that sales for both the PS4 and One will drop like a stone these next few months whereas the sales of the Wii U will get a boost in February and probably April/May due to the releases of Donkey Kong and Mario Kart 8.

There also has to be something on the way before the end of the financial year that we're unaware of behind the sales forecasts of Iwata (9m) and Patcher (6m).
Title: Re: Xbox One

Sorry, was that a "yes you were right"?  :P

I'd expect X1 and PS4 sales to slow, naturally but with some really strong launch window titles still to release, they won't slow down that much
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: harv on January 08, 2014, 10:33:25 AM
No, you're not right. As I've said, Nintendo have a secret Megaton to unleash - we'll probably have it announced at the end of the month and if it's a Wii U Pokemon then that combined with China ending their video game ban will have consoles flying off shelves. China's change in policy can't be the reason why those two sales forecasts are so high, it has to be Pokemon.

Probably a good time to buy Nintendo shares, they've already gone up in value since the ban ended (as did Sony and Microsoft shares, just not as much as Nintendo who already have a decent foothold in that market) but if they release Pokemon Wii U over there with collectible NFC cards/figurines, people over there would go fucking INSANE :o :o :o
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: harv on January 08, 2014, 10:39:18 AM
And those sales forecasts would bring the installed userbase to 9m/12m which would mean it will take longer for the PS4 and One to catch up even before you take the sales boost that Mario Kart 8 will give the Wii U probably at the beginning of the next financial year, and what's likely to be SSBU released before next Black Friday and Christmas.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on January 08, 2014, 12:00:07 PM
Of course the Wii U's 2014 line-up looks exciting compared to it's rivals - because Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Pokemon, and Super Smash Bros are much more mouthwatering than Titanfall, Infamous Second Son, The Order 1886, Destiny, Halo 5, Witcher 3, Dying Light, The Evil Within, Daylight, No Man's Sky, Driveclub, The Crew, The Walking Dead, Tom Clancy's The Division, Dark Souls 2, Dragon Age Inquisition, Metal Gear Solid Ground Zero and The Witness (to name but a few of the fantastic looking titles coming out in 2014 but not making it to the Wii U)...

Wake up, Harv. The U's getting mauled.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: harv on January 08, 2014, 01:45:20 PM
Those 4 titles combined will probably outsell those titles you've listed combined. Pokemon in particular is going to be huge when it happens. And once the Wii U's installed userbase is boosted by Donkey Kong, Pokemon and Mario Kart 8 you'll see the third party support growing.

I'm 100% certain that we're going to see Pokemon released before the end of the financial year and the effect that's going to have on sales is going to be ridiculous. I can also see a 3DS companion app coming too.

Last month's survey results are in.
100 people were polled...

Q1 - Do you know what the Wii U is?
.......... 22 Yes, I'm sure I know what it is.
.......... 78 No, I'm not sure what it is

Q2 - The Wii U is a console, and is not the same thing as a Wii. If you answered yes to the above question would it be fair to say you got it wrong, and didn't really know what the Wii U is?
.......... 15 Yes, I was mistaken. Thought I knew what it was, but turns out I didn't.
.......... 7 No, I really knew.

Q3 - Which of the following games are you most likely to purchase? (You may only pick one.)
.......... 4 Mario Kart 8
.......... 31 Titanfall
.......... 5 Pokemon
.......... 15 Dark Souls 2
.......... 28 Infamous Second Son
.......... 17 Don't know/not interested

Q4 - Have you bought a console in the last 18 months?
.......... 43 Yes
.......... 57 No

Q5 - If you answered yes to Q4, which console did you buy?
.......... 8 Xbox One
.......... 11 Xbox 360
.......... 9 Playstation 4
.......... 13 Playstation 3
.......... 1 Wii U
.......... 0 Wii
.......... 4 Other
(total 46 rather than 43 expected as several people bought more than one console in the last 18 months)

Q6 - Which console are you most likely to buy in the next 18 months?
.......... 28 Xbox One
.......... 16 Xbox 360
.......... 32 Playstation 4
.......... 13 Playstation 3
.......... 1 Wii U
.......... 0 Wii
.......... 11 Other
.......... 44 I'm unlikely to buy a console in the next 18 months.
(total 145 rather than 100 expected as several people anticipate buying two or more consoles in the next 18 months)

Q7 - At what point will the xbox One and the Playstation 4 both overtake the Wii U's sales worldwide?
.......... 33 Between January and March 2014
.......... 45 Between April and December 2014
.......... 3 Not until 2015
.......... 1 They'll never be able to catch up
.......... 18 Haven't they already overtaken it?

Q8 - Is Pokemon the gayest thing ever?
.......... 5 No
.......... 88 Yes
.......... 7 What's a Pokemon? Definitely sounds gay, at any rate.

Q9 - Is Harv a mental fanboy with a curious fascination with gay sex, pensionable women, and a toddler's games console?
.......... 3 No
.......... 97 Yes

Q10 - How much would you pay for a Wii U?
.......... 5 I'd happily pay over £100 for one
.......... 73 I'd buy one if they were less than £100
.......... 5 I wouldn't have one if they were free
.......... 17 I have no idea what you're talking about.

I would just like to point out that I have never played and probably never will play a Pokemon game, and it's only been recently that I've found out what the fuck a Pokemon is. That isn't going to stop it printing money for Nintendo and selling a shitload of home console hardware. ;)

Spent a few hours yesterday (and today) pissing around with the car customization in Forza 5 - it really is quite powerful... I created a Mighty Ducks themed car and put it up to share, to be honest, I could of spent ages doing more bits to it, but I got a bit bored and just finished it off instead... I'm gonna start messing around with the upload studio tomorrow as I haven't really used that much yet and see if I can capture a short video to post on here of it.

Edit :

Pictures - unfortunately taken from my camera phone and edited in paint - totally unsure how to save a picture in Forza 5 and be able to share that - I don't think you can..

Video - so I managed to save 2 clips - one of a replay of me racing, and one of me showcasing the car in my garage - used "Xbox Record That" commands - although I could of also snapped Upload Studio and started and ended the clip as and when I wanted.  So went into Upload Studio after I had saved two clips (I had to delete tons of shitty Peggle 2 clips - I see they have sorted that bug now as well btw)... and went to edit my first clip, chose Picture in Picture, set my showcase as the second clip and hit Upload - it really was as simple as that - so I was very impressed with that.

I'm not sure if I will buy another retail game before then..still got plenty of life in Forza 5 and Dead Rising 3.. in fact I really need to stop playing Forza 5 and get back into Dead Rising 3 - I've barely played it since I got it.. will make some time for it this week most definitely.

Nice paint job, Kieron!

Really looking forward to Titanfall. Was surprised to hear teams are capped at 6v6, but it's impossible to cast judgement until you've played it. It's possible for everyone to be operating Titans simultaneously, and with a dozen or more titans raining destruction I imagine things will be a bit busy.
Looks absolutely outstanding.

Yup, Iwata has just revised Nintendo's sales forecast from 9m to 2.8m. :o

So no Wii U Pokemon before the end of the FY by the looks of it. Not sure how they're going to turn this around tbh, Donkey Kong and Mario Kart 8 should boost sales a bit though.

Time to get rid of Iwata I think.

Dead Rising got a patch last night, apparently.
A staggering 13gb! THIRTEEN GIG! (11gb of that actually overwrites part of your previous installation, so your used HDD should only actually grow by 2gb.)

On the bright side, you won't need to boot up the console and/or game to start the download, and then wait ages for it. If you have the game then the patch should've automatically downloaded and installed itself while your console was in standby overnight. Which is canny stuff, really.

Yep, I noticed that patch yesterday, took a while to install and I went and played something else instead and didn't come back to it.. but started playing it again today and its a great game, the only niggle for me is the map is getting slightly monotonous now, its just annoying that certain roads are blocked meaning there are sometimes only one or two ways to get to 1 of the 4 areas in the game meaning you have to go the same way every time... the rollerhawg is so awesome though!!

I mentioned somewhere on these forums that I was having some problems with an Xbox code.

I bought a £40 code from Game (for £24 - price error) and scanned it in (qr). It said my balance was increasing £40 - but my balance never actually went up. Checked the wife & kids' accounts but they all had nil balances - and I was the only person home when I scanned the code in anyway so it could only go onto my account.
After 9 days I've finally got it resolved. Microsoft today confirmed it had gone onto the wife's account. God only know how that happened. Most odd. I'm positive it wasn't there when I checked last week, but it's there now. And Microsoft have bumped my own balance up by £30* to say sorry. Very nice result, all in all.
Just wish I could transfer the credit from her account to mine. Not sure what to do with £40 credit on hers. Had a look around at the marketplace and there's not much on there - and what there is is mainly £50. Will probably just leave it there a couple of months, see what comes up. And like I say - I can't complain. I paid £24 and got £70 credit.
Nice one Microsoft :D

*They actually told me that were giving me £40 but they gave me €40 in error. Works out at about £30. I'll take it!

I wish they would sort achievements out, its such a pain checking achievements compared to the 360 and its not instant either which is another annoyance.  Its stupid that I cant check my xb1 achievements online without using smartglass either.

Don't know if they have sorted the friend list stuff out, but notifications of new messages and also if I have friends online when I turn my xb1 on are an absolutely necessity  :(

Microsoft have today announced that they're reducing the price of Ryse from £49.99 to £34.99.
Looks like the price is due to go up again in a week's time, so it's hard to gauge whether this is a one-off promotion or possibly the start of something a bit more widespread. Either way, it's a nice price cut - though I doubt I'll be getting it myself. Doesn't really appeal to me. (Might give it a look if I see it for about £20 later in the year, but that doesn't seem likely tbh.)

Don't forget to fill in this months survey on http://rewards.xbox.com/ for 250 points.. I missed the last few.. but nearing my first 5000 deposit.. it only equates to £3.35 (which makes filling out a survey worth about 17p) but any saving is a saving and to be honest, I got most of my points from playing new games.. 1000 points for playing a new game for 10 hours in the first month of its release - I don't mind getting paid for my hobby  :D

Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on February 27, 2014, 04:21:48 PM
I guess you got the same email I did.
I got some email this morning reminding me about the rewards scheme, and completed the survey for the 250 points (having not done one in months). I'm currently showing as 4650 points, but that doesn't seem to include 250 from today's survey, so am pretty close to my first reward.

31/12/13 - MyAchievements – Legend Rebate - 400 Credits (Pending)
19/09/13 - Played New Game Release - 1,000 Credits (Pending)
02/09/13 - Completed September Survey - 250 Credits (Pending)
26/08/13 - Renewed 12-month Xbox Live Gold membership - 3,000 Credits (Pending)

Not sure what the "played new game" reward was in September. I guess I didn't play Forza enough for the reward (sounds about right - I probably only played about 2 hours). Must've played dozens of hours of COD in November - no reward there. I wonder if the month started when it came out on last gen platforms, because I'm sure I must have played well over ten hours in the first month after the game's release on xb1.
Fingers crossed for reward points soon for Rayman Legends, Thief, and Titanfall.

New survey done. Showing as 4900 reward points not including the March survey so I expect that'll update tomorrow and I'll get my reward later this month.

Turns out the offer where you get 1000 reward points for playing a new game was a short-lived promotion and ended in October, so that explains why I've not been earning that reward. :(

Ugh. Was having problems with my Thief disk. Has happened a few times - just hangs on a splash screen and can only be fixed by powering of completely (not a great game, and buggy too - awesome :( ) After this reboot I'm unable to log into my profile.
It seems it's a widespread problem affecting a LOT of people this evening. Unfortunate timing, with the US launch of Titanfall. Seems to be Xbox One only - Xbox 360 is apparently fine.
Can't really play anything if I can't get into my account. Wtg Microsoft. :(

Feel lucky those americans aren't getting too far ahead in Titanfall already  ;)

2 days to go - and fantastic news.. my missus is buggering off for the whole day on Saturday for paddys day.. so I'll have an entire day dedicated to Titanfall.. well actually I'm going out in the evening too, but should be on for most of the day up until 4-5ish

That's if I get it on time.. wondering why I haven't received my dispatch email yet ..  ;D :-\

Aye, hopefully we're not too far behind. It's a bit nasty that the yanks will all have scopes and extended clips on their guns, not to mention a range of new weapons and equipment when we're starting out at level one. Plus they'll know their way around the maps a bit. :(

I'm looking to buy it digitally at midnight tomorrow night. I expect it'll be £55 - which doesn't sound great when the disk version is around £37, but I got my credit at a bit of a discount so £55 would actually work out at about £35. And £35 for a digital copy of Titanfall on the xb One sounds like a bargain to me :D

I'm told the download is 16gb (extracts to 20gb), which is a lot smaller than the pc version (around 50gb), and of course you can play it before it's fully downloaded, so hopefully it'll take less than 18 hours and I'll be able to play it when I get home from work on Friday night.

Digital sale on Xbox One this weekend.

From Friday 28th March till 30th March.

Call of Duty: Ghosts* 33% off, was £54.99, down to £36.84
Thief* 50% off, was £49.99, down to £24.99
Tomb Raider* 50% off, was £44.99, down to £22.50
Call of Duty: Ghosts Digital Hardened Edition 20% off, was £89.99, down to £72.00
_______________________________________________________________

Meh. No use to me - I already have cod and thief, and had TR on the 360. And I didn't rate any of those games. Still - good if you want any of those, or want to pad out your collection a bit.

Most recent movements on my xbox rewards (http://rewards.xbox.com/myrewards/) account:

11/04/14 - Completed April Survey - 250 Credits (Pending)
31/03/14 - MyAchievements – Legend Rebate - 1,600 Credits (Pending)
26/03/14 - Rewards Deposited - 5,150 Credits

So in early March I reached/passed the 5000 credits mark, at which point they automatically convert into cash (I got £3.45).
Thanks to buying Titanfall and doing a survey I'm well on the way to my next payout.
I'll not get a reward for buying Trials, unfortunately, as I bought that on the wife's account. (Some credit I bought accidentally went onto her account, so I used a bit of that up.)

Reward for buying Trials.. ??

Have I missed something then.. I didn't get anything for buying that..

The rewards programme is ridiculous since they got rid of the new game rewards..  I mean you'd still have to buy 5 new game releases to even earn 5000 - which is still only a few quid in rewards..since the X1 release, I bought the console on launch day, several brand new games and a few other things too and earnt about 2000 credits - half of which came from fucking surveys lol ;D
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on May 07, 2014, 09:50:44 AM
Yeah, you should've gotten a few points for buying Trials, assuming you bought it digitally and on your own account. You're top tier (over 75k gamerscore) so for every £6.70 you spend on the marketplace you should get 300 Rewards Credits.
Can't remember how much it was. £10 or £15? You should be on for 300 or 600 points. Which is worth fuck all, but I'd still be complaining about not getting it.

Mind, you did get a free copy of Killer Instinct, and I got nowt, so screw you :p
Did you actually play KI, btw? Was it any good? I had one game with the one free character they gave everyone, on launch day, then completely forgot about it.

May survey done.
That one was a bit tricky. Which of these fifteen features on xb1 are your five favourites? I put voice & gesture control as #1 (though I love voice but hate gesture), and then had hdmi passthrough, home gold, and oneguide as 2-4 (not sure if I put them in that order), but struggled to come up with a #5. I'm not interested in cross party chat, Skype, Fitness, or most of the other options, and they're taking the piss if they think anyone's going to select "the large selection of marketplace games".
For the "what feature do you want added" question I put Games With Gold. I'm sure they'll be crap when we do get our free games, but free's free! :D

Killer Instinct was alright.. bit bland as a fighting game.. which are probably one of my least favourite genres anyway.. I absolutely sucked at online play.. played a few times and got my ass handed to me every single time.. people must just play them constantly to learn the combos - I just find them boring.

I didn't get anything for Trials - I got a Master Rebate (tee-hee) at the end of December for 900 credits - Peggle 2 maybe?  Since then I've only had the February Survey - I keep forgetting to do them aswell lol.

Three big announcements from Microsoft today.  All three should start in June.

They're selling a cheaper version of the One without Kinect. (Ugh)
You can use a lot of apps without Gold. (Indifferent)
Games With Gold is coming to the One. (Yay)

Going to be interesting to see if Sony respond to this by cutting the price of the PS4 by $50. Unless I'm getting my US prices mixed up that puts the Xbox One from $499.99 to $399.99, the same price as the PS4 over there. So they've gone from paying more money for a less powerful machine to paying the same amount of money for a less powerful machine. It's better but still not ideal. :-\
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: jman on May 14, 2014, 08:00:58 AM
You forget that the X1 (despite being a "less powerful machine") is already keeping up/surpassing PS4 sales in N.America on a weekly basis despite being more expensive... 2.8m - X1, vs 3.1m - PS4 -  you'll start to see the X1 dominate the market over there soon.

The biggest loser in all of this would be the Wii U - but we already knew that.

I'd rather they did an anniversary edition of Halo 2 than repackage Halo 1-4 into one collection set.. maybe jumping the gun, but I'd be sure that if it was a collection then there wont be any multiplayer... and I was really psyched to play Halo 2 MP again...

Should be seeing a patch to enable extra storage with a HD soon - that will be good - you just knew as soon as Microsoft and Sony announced the sizes of the internal hard-drive - it wasn't going to be enough... apparently Wolfenstein is a big bastard too, so I could hit half-way through my limit by tonight  :-\

I love the idea of the Master Chief Collection (Halo 1-4).
No official word on it, yet, but rumour has it there'll be the four campaigns, plus one multiplayer mode featuring the best maps from all four games.
That'd be pretty bloody awesome.

Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on May 20, 2014, 03:45:39 PM
I just hope it's at the standard price.
I have an awful feeling the rumours about Halo 2 Anniversary and the rumours about Halo Master Chief Collection might both relate to the same project - being a standard "Halo 2 Anniversary" for £50, with a "Master Chief edition" (which includes Halo 1-4) being £100 or something.
In which case they won't be seeing any of my money.

If it's all four games for £40-£50 I'm in, though.

Some might argue it's a rip off to pay that for such old games (bearing in mind the second is ten years old this year), but I'm happy to see old games come to the current generation - preferably with a polish, but I'm happy to replay them as they originally were.
Would love to see Portal, Half Life, and Bioshock get similar treatments.

EDIT - ah, I do love a good pun...
Have just seen a piece on these rumours, with the headline "Remaster Chief".  ;D
Title: Re: Xbox One

Hang on, I thought The Master Chief Collection was games 1-4 given the Halo Anniversary treatment..? So they're going to release the Collection, Halo 2 Anniversary and Halo 5..? A bit pointless for Microsoft to work on the Collection if they're not going to spruce the games up a bit, isn't it..? :-\

And aren't they overdoing things a bit with so many Halo games in one go..? :o
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on May 20, 2014, 05:44:39 PM
Nobody knows what the master chief collection is. In fact Microsoft haven't even announced it. It's just a rumour. But a VERY strong rumour...
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: harv on May 20, 2014, 06:54:41 PM
Oh right. Fair enough. Has Halo 2 Anniversary been confirmed yet or is that another rumour..?

It would make A LOT more sense to either release separate Anniversary games with updated eye candy or just release them in the Collection, in one great value package deal.

I can't see them doing both tbh. :-\
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: jman on May 21, 2014, 07:53:05 AM
Nothings been confirmed yet...

But seeing as its Halo 2's 10 year anniversary in November this year.. it would make sense that if they are going to release an anniversary edition - it would be this year.

The rumour is the master collection - the games would all be HD versions - not like the anniversary editions where all the graphical textures are rebuilt...  But it wont include Reach or ODST - therefore it wont be a complete collection in my eyes.. ODST maybe just a side extra, but Reach certainly wasn't.

I'm quite happy with one or both separately.. be a bit silly to release them together I think - but this is Microsoft we are talking about  ;D

_________________________________________________________________________

Looks like I finally got my 600 credits rebate for Trials - at last.. on 4500 credits now.. 2 more surveys.. and that £2.50 is mine!! YES!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Most played game this month (you guessed it) - TITANFALL
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on May 21, 2014, 09:51:09 AM
Yeah, you won't be surprised to hear Titanfall was my most played game of the month, too, lol.

I added a year's gold to my account a day or two back. Runs out at the end of Sept, so I added 12 months.
That should boost my reward points by 3000 - though I see you don't actually get the rewards for that until your current membership ends and your new membership kicks in, so I won't get those until Sept.

I also stuck £50 credit onto my account (bought for £39 from cdkeys. Got the 12m Gold there, too, for £24) so I'm all set if there's any bargains when the Deals With Gold initiative starts next month.

June update for Xbox One:

majornelson (http://majornelson.com/2014/05/21/external-storage-real-names-and-more-coming-with-xbox-one-system-update-in-june/)

Includes:
External hard drives (any generic usb drives over 256gb, and you can set default storage as either drive - and easily move stuff from one to the other)
Real names (can allow people on your friends list to see your name, rather than just their gamertag)
Smartglass improvements (including tv remote, drap&drop your home icons, and twitch notifications)

Yeah, just saw that..

Have to say they are getting there... making the xb1 behave exactly like the 360  ;D ;D  (With a few extra improvements thrown in for good measure of course.)

Does look good for Xb1 owners that you are seeing visible improvements each month - there's still a fair few things I'm not happy about - the fact I cant use it as a media centre is one.. the achievements app is still way too slow as another

Reminds me...
Are your blurays all playing fine?
I've been having problems with them lately.
Bought a new film yesterday and the disk wasn't recognised. (Was brand new, and spotless - and worked fine in my stand-alone BD player.) So I tried a few older films, all of which I'm sure I've watched on the xbox One in recent months, and only 3 of the 9 worked.
I tried powering off at the wall, and I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the bluray app, but it didn't seem to make any difference.
Not sure if it's a faulty unit, or possibly related to an update (either general release or "preview"). Have reported it to Microsoft.

I've never understood people wanting to use a game console for playing anything but games, although to be fair I do use mine for Netflix and LoveFilm too these days.

They're a pain in the arse, this generation, aren't they.
First Snoop is linked with your Kinect, and now Dre's knacking up the bluray drives? What next? Eminem's gonna pop round and break my controller? Tupac's gonna start haunting my hard drive?

Fuck you, Microsoft, with your obvious West Coast associations!

Bit the bullet, and contacted MS about my faulty console.
Was talking to them on webchat last night, and she got me to reset MAC address stuff, unplug everything for a couple of minutes, plug everything back in, etc. Still no joy.
Been putting it off, because I don't want to go a few weeks without a console, waiting for it to be repaired/replaced.

Needn't have worried, though. They're sending me a new console, and I'll return to them the faulty one after I've received the new one.
Nice service, that.

Result!  Best to get it done whilst it is in warranty.

Well I can stream stuff directly to my tv (or X1) from the WMC on the pc because they are all on the same network.. except it doesn't seem to stream everything I used to be able to watch on the 360 with it's built in media centre.. its weird.. the files are normal AVI's and MP4's and some work, some don't.. could be a codec issue but they seem to play ok when I use the 360 or the pc.  Since I've moved the 360 and disconnected it from the network its a right pain in the ass when stuff no longer plays.

And yes, not having to buy a separate Blu-ray player/dvd player/media streamer/console is handy - part of the reason I bought an Xb1 was the fact it could do everything the 360 can do plus more.

After speaking to Microsoft on Thursday morning, I got an email saying my xbox would be shipped within the next two working days, and that I'll get an email when it's dispatched.
Still no email received, so I've just phoned MS to see what's happening - as I need to make sure someone's home to take delivery. Quite unlike them to take so long to dispatch. They said within 2 working days but I kinda expected it to be dispatched that same day...

After several minutes on the phone it turns out the console was dispatched on Thurs 29th, they've no idea why I didn't get my dispatch email, and it was delivered at about 10 o'clock this morning. I felt like a right dozy tw@t.
You'd think the wife would bloody let me know it'd been delivered! Dizzy tart. I'd be blasting her on the phone right now, but I know she's working 12.00-6.00 today.

Anyway, good result that it's been delivered. :D

Oh nice. Will have to check it out tonight :D
Was knackered last night so didn't really put the xbox on (well it's always on when the tv's on, but you know what I mean) so I haven't progressed with Titanfall (still on gen 9) and I haven't installed anything other than Titanfall, Youtube, and BluRay Player.

I'm intrigued by the new "Brazil Now" app. Don't think it's available yet, and it probably won't bring much to the table, but it's nice that footy is getting some attention from Microsoft rather than just the usual American sports.
For those who haven't heard of it, it's an app you can install that will pop up alerts about goals, and other news from the World Cup. You can also have it in "snap" mode (which uses about a quarter of your screen) where it'll display live stats etc.
Like I say, it might not actually be all that good, as your usual tv providers will keep everyone up to date with anything you need to know anyway, but it's great to see they're getting into the footy and you never know - it might be really good.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: jman on June 04, 2014, 10:24:08 AM
Yeah I heard about "Brazil Now" and would of definitely used it - but since my tv has built-in freeview and I have no satellite or cable.. I can't get any of the tv stuff working with my X1  :(

I think the Oneguide is coming soon (or might of been included in the June pre-update) which looks to work really well with Kinect.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on June 04, 2014, 10:30:07 AM
Yeah, the OneGuide's pretty cool.
Most of the time I just use my remote control, as normal, but if it's not in reach I'll just give it a bit of "xbox, watch tv. Oneguide. Page down. Page down. Watch South Park" (for instance), and it generally works just fine.
It was still a little bit buggy last time I used it (probably about a week ago). Sometimes it'll try to go to a channel I don't have, and sometimes the shortcuts didn't come up onscreen. But most of the time it's fine.

Possible early signs that Microsoft's decision to free up the 10% GPU bandwidth previously reserved strictly for Kinect could make a real difference:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...gn=socialoomph

Destiny is now expected to run at 1080p/30fps on both PS4 and XB1 according to Bungie, whereas before it was expected the XB1 version would only manage a lower resolution.  :)

Xbox.com finally updated so you can see your Xbox One achievements.. + your 360 ones too.

Looks like in July we will see the achievement snap mode - looking forward to that seeing as the achievements app still takes an age to load.  Also the double-tap to snap mode.. double tapping the xbox guide button bringing up a list of snappable apps to snap onto the side on the screen.. handy!

I reckon we'll see LocoCycle on GWG next month - the trailer looked so cheesy I almost wanted to play it.. but I'm hoping Crimson Dragon - although I think it'll be a few months before that is made free as its on offer at the moment.

Free games for Gold members on Xbox One this July:
"Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition" & "Max: The Curse Of Brotherhood"

Wtf Microsoft?!
You're giving us two games every month, but one of them will be a repeat?
They could maybe get away with a repeat six months later, but rolling a game from month one into month two is taking the piss.
And Guacamelee doesn't look that good. I've had it on Stream for about a year but not even tried it once, yet.

Very disappointing.

Meanwhile, on the Xbox 360, "Gotham City Imposters" and "BattleBlock Theater".

Fingers crossed for two new ones in August, but I'm not overly optimistic.
I've not checked but someone told me the terms say we'll get two games a month, and at least one of them will be new to GWG - so I'd imagine next month they'll give us one new one (my money's on Lococycle or Crimson Dragon) plus one old one (presumably either Spartan Assault will return, or they'll roll Guacamelee forward).

I'll definitely download Guacamelee, and give it a look, but I'd been hoping they'd dazzle us for the first few months to rope more people in - perhaps with Zoo Tycoon or Ryse.

I take it back.
I'm enjoying Guacamelee a lot more than I thought I would.

Not content with pissing off early adopters by killing the console's USP and slashing it's RRP, and bringing out loads of marketplace deals on the 360 for people who didn't bother upgrading to the new console, Microsoft have decided to kick us in the teeth once more - by offering people $75 of xbox credit for upgrading to the One...

Marvellous.

Just goes to show how much of a flop the console has been so far. It isn't flopping as hard as the Wii U by any means but the console is in trouble. The VGC figures are overtracked imo, I can't see there being more than 4.5m consoles in homes worldwide which is only around 1m more than the Wii U this time last year. Microsoft's silence on sales as opposed to shipments is deafening.

It's only a matter of time before the PS4 has sold twice as much as the One, and once PS4 SKUs sell twice as much as One SKUs publishers are going to start to take notice. The Xbox One is in big trouble at the moment, I'm surprised the press haven't started picking up on it yet tbh. :-\

August's games with gold:

Xbox One: Crimson Dragon and Strike Suit Zero (available all month).
Xbox 360: Motocross Madness (first half month) and Dishonored (second half month).

Nice to get two new freebies on the One this month - even if they're not exactly the most popular of games (I recall Crimson Dragon getting very poor reviews; I think Strike Suit Zero fared better).

Quite happy with Crimson Dragon... I have very fond memories of playing Panzer Dragoon on the old Saturn.   Haven't even heard of Strike Suit Zero.. but will give it a go either way.

EA just announced EA Access - a subscription service for the Xbox One which allows users to play older EA titles for $4.99 a month.. or $29.99 per year.. only 4 titles included so far - Fifa 14, Madden NFL 25, Peggle 2 and Battlefield 4

Plus you get digitial discounts on newer games (10%) and trial access to newer games before the launch.

Sounds good.. the pricing is decent which is the main thing.. if they can add a few decent titles to the service - I'd definitely give it a go on a monthly basis.

Nice initiative, that.
I do worry, though, that we might end up in a situation where it seems normal to pay monthly fees to Microsoft, EA, Activision, Ubisoft, and a few others.

And whilst the scheme seems okay now, I'm not sure where it's headed. If they don't include access to their latest game people will buy that game. And then in a year's time when that game is added to those that subscribers get are you going to keep your subs going?

Time will tell. At present and in the short term it just means more options, and that's rarely a bad thing. Choice is good.

Strike Suit Zero could be worth a go. Not sure about the other one. Was hoping for something like Zoo Tycoon or Ryse, but can't complain.

EA Access looks like it might be good value, but this is EA we're talking about... I'll probably subscribe just to try BF4, and surely they'll add Plants vs Zombies and NFS Rivals soon as they've both been out a while.

Had a go on Crimson Dragoon last week. Not my cup of tea at all. Did the training mission, was crap at it, replayed that mission, was crap again, gave up. Have never been a fan of on-rails shooters. They're a bit 80s.

Strike Suit Zero is a bit better. It's not really my thing but it's okay - for free. Will tide me over for a few days. Did the training mission, was crap at it, replayed that mission, was a bit better at it, moved on to the next mission.

Might give Titanfall another look soon. There's been some new dlc. One new map pack (at a cost) and one free update that adds a few things (such as the ability to buy and sell burn cards, rather than just binning your excess ones). If matchmaking is working okay I might get the map pack - which is supposed to be good.

All in all I'm largely just burning time ahead of Minecraft hopefully coming out later this month. I know it's often ridiculed, as it's a game with no real objective and it's appeal is hard to explain, but I liked the clone I played a couple of years ago and am keen to try out the real thing.
(As for it being hard to explain, and having no real objective, I'm comfortable with that. Explaining it to non-gamers is actually easier than explaining Sim City to them!)

Ah. They've now said it's exclusivity is timed - but they won't say for how long.
So we're probably looking at Q4 in 2015 on xbox and then Q1 or Q2 in 2016 for other platforms.

Child of Light and LocoCycle are both reduced this week on the One, in the "Deals with Gold" initiative.
I don't fancy LocoCycle, but Child of Light might be worth a look.

Wonder if I need to install Preview.
Never actually got round to installing the app after Microsoft replaced my One.

Installed the Preview app last night, and got my codes today to download the Halo 5 beta.
There are two downloads. Not sure how big they are, but the first one has been downloading for an hour and is still only at 36%...

EDIT:
Took about four and a half hours in the end, for a 10gb download. Must be massive server loads - shouldn't take anything like that to download only ten gig. The second download was a tiny file that took only seconds.

The beta is two maps and one game mode - "Slayer".
I can't remember what the older Halo games were like (I played 1-3 back in the day, and got about halfway through Halo 1 in the MCC recently before getting distracted) but Halo 5 seems to play pretty good. Did recent ones have sprint & climb mechanics? They work well on this, and I'm sure they weren't in Halo CE but later ones might've had them.
The maps seem decent, if a little sterile, from first impressions. I've only played one game on each map but I feel I know my way around both already - which is a little worrying. I'm used to multiplayer maps being bigger and taking a fair while to know your way around.

And of course I did crap - but that's to be expected. I'm okay on COD (just "okay" - I definitely wouldn't qualify as "good" or even "quite good") but was never really any good at Halo.
K/D was 6/12 first game and 10/13 second game.

They will also be adding another remastered map to Halo 2 for free.

Nice, although ODST is probably the weakest halo... Reach would of been good, wonder what they will do with that.  Been playing a lot of MCC recently, looks like they have finally fixed matchmaking too, so been playing a lot of that too.

Have to say my favourite halo game is actually Halo 3, after playing the halo 2 / halo 3 campaigns and comparing the multiplayer, I think halo 3 just edges it, although I have very fond memories of halo 2.

So I played one game of halo 5 mp... Was the reimagined midship level, which is actually one of my least liked maps from halo 2.  17 kills, 9 deaths, 1.9k/d ratio.  Unsure what I make of it, but it doesn't really matter, halo 5 is a launch day purchase whatever.

Think sprint was introduced "properly" in ODST/Reach.  Climbing in halo 3.  Personally I think it makes no difference

Typical Microsoft.. do all the best deals before payday  :P

I wouldn't bother with Kinect Sports Rivals.. 80% off is good.. but the game is nowhere near as good as the previous instalments.. the games just aren't that much fun.   I never really got very far in it.

I'd probably pick up Shadow of Mordor if it comes in under £30.. but I've bought two digital games this month already, got plenty to play still.. and probably need to get a hard-drive before I buy anything else... not much space left.

I'm with you there. I've had to delete so much bloody stuff lately.
TBH if the console had come with a 1TB drive inside it it'd probably be borderline full now, mind. Games get through so much disk space these days, it's shocking. I'm sure I've removed about 8-10 games in recent months, each of which used around 40-50gb.

Will have to hold off on an external HDD though. It's a luxury rather than a necessity, as I probably won't want to replay any time soon (if at all) the stuff I've been uninstalling. Annoying that I'll have to go through the rigmarole if I do want to go back to one of them though.

I can't justify paying for the Telltale games I bought on the 360 again, even with a discount. I'll grab Game of Thrones after all the episodes have been released together at an inevitably discounted price. I'm not really interested in any of the other sale games either, but I have recently picked up The Escapists and Pier Solar. Have played a few hours of The Escapists and managed to escape from the first prison using a ridiculously easy method I can't believe I didn't try first. As Jman says, the game explains nothing so I was trying to think up some master Michael Scofield-esque plan when it wasn't necessary. Maybe it will be for the later prisons.

Not had a chance to really get into Pier Solar yet, but it's a 16-bit classic JRPG that reminds me a lot of the early FF games in terms of visual style. It sports turn-based combat which I don't mind too much (although I prefer real-time). Supposed to have around 40-50 hours of gameplay so I took a punt at £12 given that there's a distinct lack of decent JRPGs around at the moment.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: jman on February 18, 2015, 07:53:40 AM
I think you escaped the same way I did then lol... the third prison is where it starts to get tough because that method doesn't work.. I still haven't escaped yet.. 23 days in... I get so frustrated at getting chucked into solitary.. that if I've had a productive day in the prison, I don't dare try and escape and lose all my hard days work.. it takes so bloody long replaying each day, doing favours and collecting items you need.

I had my eye on Pier Solar for ages.. cant beat a decent 16bit RPG.. never downloaded it though, the reviews weren't very kind
and not sure I would want to dedicate that amount of time to a game I might not like.

Haven't tried out either of those, yet, but it seems I was lucky to get Lords of the Fallen.
It was only in the sale for a couple of hours, then removed...

The developers have said that it's supposed to be in the sale, and they've no idea why it's been removed. Microsoft are saying it should never have been put in there in the first place, and was discounted accidentally.
Lots of very angry people now, of course.

TBH Microsoft would be best off reducing it, now. Nobody in their right mind is going to pay fifty quid for it at the moment, so selling tens of thousands of copies of a digital product at £7.50 must surely be better business than selling zero copies at £49.99 - and that's without factoring in the goodwill/badwill side of the equation.

So a few months after I got my Xbox One the disk drive started playing up. It'd occasionally not recognise when I put a disk in - irrespective of whether it was a game disk or a BD film, but at first it was usually okay if you ejected it and put it back in again.
Over the next few weeks it got worse and worse - until around Feb 2014 it was only recognising disks about one in ten times. At that point I got on to Microsoft Support, and they quickly sorted me out a replacement. (Sent me a new one, and asked me to send them the dodgy one a week later.) I think they extended my warranty at that point, or perhaps it was always up to Feb 2015 - I don't recall. Either way, it ran out a week or two ago.

This last week or so I've noticed my xbox sometimes isn't recognising disks when I put them in. Eject it and put it back in once or twice and you're usually okay.
This doesn't look good...  :-\

Edit - just found this:

lol that's a bit nuts...

I've had this problem too.. most recently with my MCC disc... admittedly I haven't been swapping discs around a lot lately..probably around 3 or 4 times in a few months as I haven't bought many disc based games recently and tend to use the X360 for DVDs... so I haven't seen it for a while.. but a few months back it just would not read MCC at all... took about 10-15 attempts before it read it..

Will keep this in mind next time I see it lol  8)

Nice. I knew there had to be some reason I did those surveys.
Haven't actually played on the console in the about three weeks, mind.
Did serve as a reminder to download this month's free games, though. After clearing some space on the HDD yet again.

Love the fact that all the 360 games can now be downloaded to the X1 and played through backwards compatibility - therefore giving a potential 5 free games to any X1 owner each month.  Saying that, I already own Castlestorm and have owned Operation Flashpoint in the past...and Sacred 3 has got really bad reviews..  ;D

But the X1 titles are much better... not a massive fan of stealth games, but even I can see that Thief is a pretty good game to have on GWG.

Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on November 29, 2015, 04:09:54 AM
Yeah, Thief is a decent game at that price - just don't expect it to be as good as the old Thief games, if you ever played them, back in the day. This one's way too linear.

Haven't bought anything physical in the Black Friday sales this year, but I did add a few games to my xbox library. Picked up The Escapists last week, and also got Rare Replay this weekend. RR has been as cheap as £9.99 for a physical copy, but I was holding out for a decent price on digital - so was happy to pay £12.99 for it.

Haven't played them, yet - nor have I played any of the last few months' GWGs - I've been busy playing COD Blops 3. Pretty good fun, though as always I'm not very good at it and my K/D ratio is appalling. It's getting a bit better now that I'm at a high level - so have access to better weapons and equipment. I was always a fan of the claymores and bouncing betties in the earlier instalments, and the futuristic variant "trip mines" are keeping my stats reasonable now - I get more kills with them than with my guns (I'm mainly sprinting around dual-wielding pistols). With the trip mines it's all about the positioning. In Search & Destroy (the only game mode I ever play) you soon know good places to put them, but there's always new places to learn.

Sent you a message on the xbox yesterday, btw, Kieron - not sure if you've seen it.

Must of missed it bud.. Rare Replay is brilliant, definitely a bargain at that price.. I will go back to mine after Christmas probably and try and do a bit more.. I want to play Kameo and finish off Viva Pinata 2... cant see myself getting all the stamps in it though - just don't think I have the patience for some of it.

Finished Fallout 4 now and all of the separate paths you can go down.. I've played it way too quickly lol.. there is one really annoying slightly buggy achievement though.. that's getting a settlement up to 100% happiness - that could take a while to get and there are a few more achievements I've still to get.. so there is still a bit of life left in it..

Not much for me there... own KI and owned and completed Dirt + Deus Ex... great games if you haven't played them..  Zheros looks like a side-scrolling beat-em-up version of the film Incredibles..

Not too shabby.
Never really played KI (if memory serves I got one or two characters when I got the console, but I only played one game). Love DX:HR, but tbh I doubt I'll play it again - I played it on the 360 when it came out, and I played it again on Steam a couple of months ago.
ZHeros and Dirt definitely to try out.

Killer Instinct is a bit crap.. or rather.. I'm bloody awful at it, and I don't like getting my arse handed to me... lol.

Dirt Showdown is probably the worst of the Dirt games, but it is still worth a go regardless of if you have played any of the others.

Hmmm.. not great..

I played ZHeroes the other day from last months GWG - I started playing on the hardest mode... and it is quite tough... but more importantly - it is utterly shit!

Downloaded a game called Sparkle 2 last night (never heard of Sparkle 1) - just released.. its a Zuma clone.. (which itself is a clone but that's by-the-by) - and it lacks any kind of charm or imagination that Zuma has..... BUT.. it is a puzzle match-3-marble type game.. which I do enjoy playing from time-to-time.. so fulfilling that itch.. and it only cost a fiver... and I'll probably waste 8+ hours time on it for the achievements... gotta have something to play before Far Cry Primal at the end of the month anyway  ;D

Looks like Microsoft are knocking the Hololens on the head. They say it's not going to be released for 'the foreseeable future'. Probably down to a couple of competitors showing AR devices with a MUCH better FOV recently. :-\
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on February 26, 2016, 08:12:23 AM
You're talking bollocks, mate.
They've said they won't release it until they think the time is right - which is pretty much how all technology is released.

Given a choice between buying a hololens now for £1000 with three games supported and a limited field of vision, or buying one in two years' time for £300 with improved sensors and field, and scores of games supported I'd much rather the second option.
Still wouldn't buy it, mind. Not until I'm certain the tech works well and is likely to be supported long-term.

I'll say it again, for emphasis, though. I've seen zero indication Microsoft are "knocking the hololens on the head".

Got it from here (http://www.polygon.com/2016/2/22/11093250/mindful-of-kinects-fate-microsoft-wont-launch-its-vr-until-the-world).

Yes, they're letting developers for 3 grand, but what developer in their right mind would start working on a HoloLens game..? :o

It's not quite as bad as the Kinect, the FOV problem won't make mainstream game development impossible the way that Kinect's lag did but I don't think it's a coincidence that they've put what could be a very long hold on releasing it when there are two superior alternative headsets on the horizon.

I also think that Room Scale VR is going to go the same way as the Kinect because, again, it's going to be virtually impossible to develop mainstream games for it. The vast majority of mainstream games involve exploration or movement from one area to another. So let's say that your playable area is your living room. The southern edge is your sofa, the northern edge is your telly and the eastern and western edges are your walls either side.

You walk from the southern edge to your northern edge. You use the teleportation mechanic to move to the next area (which only contextually makes sense in sci-fi games and breaks immersion anyway) and you have to turn around. It's ridiculous tbh.

The games that work with Room Scale VR are games like Space Pirates Training, Hover Junkers, Job Simulator, Surgeon Simulator, Fantastic Contraption and Tilt Brush where all of the gameplay is in one area. And all of these games are going to get old fast, just as the Kinect games did. Game designers just ran out of ideas for the thing, and the same is going to happen with Room Scale VR. :-\

And Meta 2 devkits, one of the two superior alternatives I mentioned earlier, have just become available for developers for $949.

Just with Kinect they've come up with a great idea on paper but when they actually start developing the idea it's fundamentally flawed. :(  (https://www.metavision.com/buy)

A bit of a weird coincidence, because one of the co-founders of Oculus was killed in a similar way not so long ago. :-\ :(

Drunk drivers need to be skinned alive imo. Fuckers. >:(

Definitely. I've had PS+ for about a year and a half now, and can probably count on one hand the amount of games I've downloaded and actually liked.

I keep meaning to start The Wolf Among Us but still haven't got round to it since buying it in November lol.

Post by: harv on March 27, 2016, 02:54:45 AM
Yup, like stupac has said it isn't just lately, it's been going on for quite a while.

Now that I'm joining the PC Master Race (well I'm nearly there, just got my monster graphics card to go!) and will be doing all of my gaming in VR ALL consoles are going to be dead to me from November onwards. I already didn't buy a PS4 or Xbox One this generation because I'm refusing to pay a yearly tax to play online, but my Wii U will also start to gather dust...although I'll still use it to watch Netflix in bed!

Not getting any consoles at all next generation, once you go VR you never go back lol :P ;D

Mind you, I will be tempted to play PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U emulators in VR using Virtual Desktop, but that's because I'll be playing games on a 150" screen lmfao ;D ;D ;D

Post by: jman on March 29, 2016, 10:19:05 AM
I read a few of the many Oculus reviews that have been posted in the last couple of days... to summarise them all = Hardware - great.  Games - crap - don't bother wasting your money now.  Yep, enjoy wasting your money on PC gaming harv... hopefully it means we won't have to listen to your Nintendo biased tripe in the console threads any more?  One can hope...

Back to Xbox gaming...
So made a start on the backlog of GWG - played and finished Sherlock Holmes : Crimes & Punishment... it was a bit shit to be honest.. and I've never liked Sherlock.. which was compounded even further by the films because I think Robert Downey Jnr is a bit of a smarmy prick. but that's by-the-by.   The game has you collecting evidence/clues in 6 different cases to solve murders basically... not a bad premise.. and it would of been a bit better had it been a bit more open-ended, but it is so linear and the general gameplay is just shite.  It took about an hour just to get used to moving around because of all the invisible walls that box your character in and ultimately funnel you into finding every single bit of evidence/clue - it felt impossible to miss anything in each case.   Playing the cases once was more than enough.. and I collared the correct killer in 5 of the 6 cases on the first go... the fact I was paying very little attention to any of the clues or evidence I picked up just goes to show how easy the game was too.  The case I got wrong was probably the best case.. but to replay the case afterwards meant starting it from the beginning.. which meant collecting every single piece of evidence/clue again.  One annoying niggle with the game was that about 75% of the dialogue was skippable.. but a random 25% of the dialogue made you read/watch all of it before it got onto the next piece of dialogue.. which might or might not be skippable.. made replaying that one case a chore.. the load times for each section in a case aren't exactly quick either.
3/10

So I started another one that was on GWG a few months back.. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing - I don't know why I picked this game.. I hated the Van Helsing film when it first came out.. but I thought I'd give this a few hours and call it a day.. I ended up completing it over the last week.. and probably sunk about 13-15 hours into it in total... so its not a complete shower of shit...but its far from an "Incredible Adventure".   So its a Baldurs Gate type of game.. which was a welcome surprise actually... I haven't played anything like that for a while (unless you count Dragon Age - but I didn't really get on with that).. I really should of knocked Van Helsing on the head after the first hour or two.. because the game is so repetitive and annoying.. I was getting very bored/frustrated towards the end of it... the game consisted mainly of exploring a tiny bit of the map until you hit a set of monsters.. retreating whilst killing the monsters.. and then rinse and repeat.... one of the major headaches in the game was the information overload... it took me about 5-6 hours to work out which buttons were the shortcut buttons for healing potions/mana potions.. (despite those buttons being displayed on the screen at the bottom left for the entire game - my excuse is that the graphics are utter wank.. so those buttons aren't very clear!  The cutscene graphics are hilariously bad)... Anyway sorting out the inventory was the worst though.. and to make matters worse, you have a ghost companion who also has her own set of inventory items - at times I just couldn't be bothered to change my weapons/armor because I knew it would take about an hour to do it properly!  Ok maybe a slight over-exaggeration, but I ended up using a perk so I could carry more items.. just so I didn't have to sort out my inventory when it came to selling stuff so often.  Another annoying issue were the ridiculously long load-times.. so that carry perk came in handy again because if I wanted to go back to my base to sell stuff... it meant having to endure two long loading times.. one to get to the base and one back out again.  I would probably go back to this game and mop some of the achievements up.. there's a decent little tower defense part in the middle of the game which was by far the highlight of the game for me... but there's no way to replay certain sections within the game and there's zero chance I'm replaying the game from the start again so I'm probably done with this now.
4.5/10

Currently thoroughly enjoying Fallout 4 and Plague Inc.
I bought Plague Inc and Witcher 3 in the marketplace sale - but doubt I'll get around to Witcher any time soon. Fallout will keep me busy for a while, and I need to get back to Rare Replay some time soon (not to mention Halo).

Also bought a Rabbids game on the One. Don't know anything about it but it was cheap and I enjoyed some of the Rabbids games on the Wii.

Have also been playing Remember Me and Speedball 2 on Steam.

The Lucky's Tale game reviews have been a bit odd so far. Lucky's Tale has had 3 mixed reviews, but all of the hardware reviews have mentioned the games and praised Lucky's Tale in particular. I'm expecting Lucky's Tale to get mostly positive reviews, Chronos and Adr1ft to get mixed ones and the rest of them to get mostly positive reviews. The standout game is going to be Technolust I think, it's going to be right up there with Project CARS and Elite Dangerous.

One thing that does concern me is how the comfort level is going to affect reviews. Reviewers reviewing 'Intense' level games MUST have steady 'VR legs' for the reviews to remain fair. Oculus have come up with these comfort levels for a reason :o

Plague is a nice little time-waster.. although the random nature of the game can be a bit of an enjoyment killer... after I finished it on normal mode.. I enjoyed using a few guides to get some of the achievements.

I bought Fruit Ninja Kinect 2 last week.. have to say.. the Kinect integration is about a hundred times better than the original game on the 360.. it is so fluid - it makes a massive difference and improves the game a lot.. the "sequel" is pretty much exactly the same as the original.. a few game-modes have been tacked on.. but I kinda knew that when I bought it.. haven't tried side-by-side multiplayer yet.. that could be good fun though.

That's an absolute shit load of games coming through the indie/ID channels at the moment.. I downloaded a game about 3 or 4 weeks ago.. and its miles down the list on the recent releases.. quite impressive.. some of the games are really appealing aswell.. Prison Architect, Active Soccer 2 DX, Trackmania Turbo, Shadow Complex Remastered, Ori & The Blind Forest.. plus a few others too.

That's cool bud, I got a code myself yesterday too... I think it runs from today to Sunday.. but I'm away most of the weekend on a booze-up, so I've decided not to bother using the code.. I've already decided I'm going to pre-order the game based on what I saw in the previous beta anyway.  I'd recommend giving it a go if you're undecided about buying it.. I know its only the multi-player portion of the game.. and I'm not one to typically delve into online multiplayer - but its great fun.. it harks back to the older Doom/Quake games in terms of its pace and gameplay.

Free Joy Ride Turbo game.. instructions here : Link (http://www.hotukdeals.com/freebies/free-joy-ride-turbo-game-xbox-one-2474437)

Think its the 360 game that now works on X1 - I downloaded it last night.. dunno if its gonna be worth the hassle though - 67 on metacritic.

If you have trouble getting it to work, just change the last 3 digits a few times, or change the postal code.. it works after a while.

Never played any of them.. looking forward to Spelunky though.

I was trying to play The Crew last night.. fucking stupid idea to have a constant internet connection - I know it wasn't my connection, but every 5-10 minutes I was being dumped out of the game saying the Xbox Live Services were unavailable.. and then I tried later again that night and couldn't even get into the game because the Ubisoft servers were down...  I would be fucking furious if I paid any money for this.  Its a shame because the basic concept for The Crew isn't bad.. its probably got the best open-world design in a racing game too...I just love the fact you can drive everywhere in the states - took me the best part of an hour to drive from Detroit to Miami.. I wanted to check out South Beach - as I have driven around there.. and its spot on - even the place we ate for dinner one night is a restaurant in the game - Washington and New York are pretty spot on too - driving over Brooklyn Bridge and being able to take in all the sights took me back to when we did it.

My online participation has mainly been about seeing people nearby and crashing into their cars... sounds lame, but its actually been quite fun.. some guy was trying to grief me the other night when I was wanted by the police by trying to stop me driving off... took about 20 minutes to lose the cops.. and kudos to him, he kept up with me all the time.. when I finally did lose the cops.. I just rammed my car into his, blocked him into a corner and he couldn't escape lol.  After a couple of minutes his car just faded away - he must of fast travelled somewhere lol - I didn't see him again after that.   I felt quite sorry for someone I was pestering a few days back.. poor guy was just trying to play the game and I kept ramming his car off the road and driving off.. then 5 minutes later, catching up with him and doing it again.. he tried to catch me once and I went off-road and he ended up flying off a cliff lolol.

If your Xbox is dying you should use this opportunity to get yourself an Oculus Rift while the price is still cheap and join the VR revolution. It's £400 for another 3 weeks and after that the price is coming down from the pre-sale £600 to £500.

No online tax to pay and the ONLY way to play any sort of cockpit game. The first time you see the inside of a Coriolis space station and the first time you come out of hyperspace in Elite Dangerous will absolutely blow your mind :o

And it's looking like VR has it's very first 'killer apps' in Lone Echo and Echo Arena too (although imo there have been several since both headsets launched, particularly Elite Dangerous!).

Well that's your loss lol

At only 400 quid, getting a Rift instead of another Xbox One is a no-brainer tbh, particularly now that you have a PC capable of running it. It brings gaming to another level.

Back to your corner.

A £170 console on which I can play cod and titanfall, versus a £400 headset on which I can't is indeed a no-brainer.

Echo Arena is a million miles better than both of those two added together ;)

I went to lean on the Holotable in Lone Echo last night and nearly fell over lmfao :-[ ;D

I've started to use the same software they've used for that game too for my website (which is in the process of being constructed) and VR game I'm working on. It really is a fantastic piece of kit...but I can't see my textures being anywhere near as good as theirs.

Lone Echo just looks SO GOOD :o And the zero g gameplay is awesome too. I've also decided to rip off borrow the gameplay mechanic they use to turn your torch on and off too.  You just extend your pointy finger and switch it on by the side of your head. 8)

Risk you take when buying a launch machine unfortunately.  I've had a few issues with the Blu-ray drive where it takes about 5000 turns to get it to read.. but other than that its been fine.  Best off waiting for an X1X - unsure whether I'm getting one at launch as I've got other things that are more important, but I'll definitely upgrade at some point.

Mine's struggled with blurays for the last few years, but I find if you hang onto the disk for a second when you put it in (so start to insert it until you feel the machine pulling it in, and hang onto it briefly before releasing) it almost always works.

Not sure about the 1x. I do like the look of it, but my tv's only 720p so it doesn't make sense to upgrade unless I buy a new telly, and finances are a bit tight. Might just get another xb1 or an xb1s to tide me over. I'm now having to factory reset the current machine about once a day.

Get a Rift instead! It's worth getting a Rift just for the Alien Isolation VR Mod, and a Half Life 2 VR Mod is on its way too! And then you have the Doom 3 BFG VR Mod too before you even start to think about the Facebook funded AAA games and Fallout 4 VR and Doom VFR on the way.

Plus you can play my game, Nakamura's Fall, if I ever get it finished ;D

Just started working my way through the Substance Designer tutorials, the guy that does them must be worth his weight in gold to Allegorithmic because his tutorials are so easy to follow.

I've done 38 models so far for my game and am going to texture some of them soon. I need to do a few more but now that I have the Substance Indie Pack I'm itching to texture some of them now.

Yeah, no.

Alien Isolation was a really bad game. Adding a gimmick to a bad game doesn't make it good.

I was never a massive fan of half life (it was good, but not the be all and end all that everyone raves about), I've played it through a couple of times, and playing it again has no appeal.

And money is tight.

And vr is probably a fad.

And I have a family. I don't see any appeal in wearing a janky headset while the rest of the family do something else.

Ain't going to happen, mate. Nobody but you round here has any interest in vr. You're flogging a dead donkey.

I think you're getting your Alien games mixed up. Alien Colonial Marines by Gearbox was godawful, Alien Isolation by Creative Assembly is a different kettle of fish altogether. It's everything that Colonial Marines should have been. Looks great and plays even better. There are plenty of people that didn't have the balls to finish the game on a flat screen...and in VR it's fucking crazy scary.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: Late on August 03, 2017, 08:32:10 PM
No, I'm taking about Isolation.
My impressions of the game, posted a couple of years ago on dealspwn:

Quote
Late  Feb. 16, 2015 at 09:53
I love the Alien films (well the first two, anyway - I prefer to pretend the latter ones didn't happen. Like the Matrix. But I digress. Already. I'm only five words into my post and I've gone off on a tangent for ages. Get some control, Late!) and have tried most of the games that have spawned from the franchise, and they've all been a bit rubbish (though I was in that minority that quite enjoyed AvP) - so I was overjoyed when this latest one got very good reviews.

Yet I gave up on it last night - about half-way through. :(
I'm alright at stealth games. I like to explore most games anyway, and I always enjoy finding alternative paths, so a game based on some of my favourite films and with mechanics that I like should be right up my street! It's very tense as you creep around a newly unlocked area of the space station collecting everything you can scavenge (ammo, and parts to make smoke bombs etc.) and checking in at computer terminals etc., whilst constantly checking your motion detector; before scooting into a locker or similar hiding place just as the alien appears. And then you're trying to peek out through the slats to see where it is. It's incredibly tense. You can't see it. Take a peek at the motion scanner. The alien hears the beeps, and kills you. You restart from the last save point (which was only a couple of rooms back, but it took you 20 sodding minutes to get through those couple of rooms). You repeat every step from above. Including the bit where you get killed in the locker you were hiding in. You repeat it all again (collecting all the stuff you can each time, checking the computer terminals again each time) but hide in a different place. Different place but same result. So this time you decide to be a bit less cautious, you don't skirt around the edge of the room in a crouched stance, but instead walk at normal pace through the middle, and you're fine. You walk into the second room, your attention has perhaps slipped a little, you don't notice that tell-tale gloopy mucussy stuff dripping from the overhead vent, you see the alien's tail go through your torso. You restart from the checkpoint. You switch it off and watch tv for a while, having wasted over an hour without really progressing. And when you do make it to that next checkpoint it's pretty much the same thing again. You're in a new area. You explore it. You die repeatedly.

I'm playing on medium/normal difficulty, and I'm a seasoned gamer. I don't know if I'm just being rubbish, if I'm getting old, if I'm so used to games being easy these days that I have a hissy fit when I encounter a little difficulty whilst completely forgetting that games used to be way more unforgiving.
Whatever it is, I give up.

Installed Far Cry 4. Absolutely loving it, so far. I'm not very far into it, but it's so much more intuitive, so much more fun. So much easier.
Is that last part a good thing? I'm not sure. It sure feels like it, though, as I whiz around this war-torn land like the genetically engineered spawn of Rambo, Che Guevara, and John Marston.

That just means ya don't have da skillz innit 8)

You REALLY need to play this in VR tbh, although I do agree that the save points are a bit crap. This is the 21st Century ffs, save points are so 90s  :o

In VR it's bloody terrifying, I'm going to be doing very well to finish the game tbh. Last night was the very first time I've felt genuine fear whilst playing a video game. It's crazy.

Dreadhalls came close but rather than fear, as the name of the game suggests, you start to feel dread instead.

With the release of the One X on the horizon there are some good deals kicking around for the One S, so I took advantage at Game.

My old console had been factory reset about 20-30 times in the last couple of months, (including 5 times in one infuriating day last week), so maybe could've limped on for another couple of months before giving up the ghost.

Got £105 trade-in for my knackered console (which operated flawlessly when they tested it). Picked up the newer console for £200 including Forza Horizon 3 (digital) and FIFA 18 Ronaldo edition (physical). I've no interest in FIFA, and that version is selling new for about £75 so hopefully I'll get £40-£50 for it unopened.

So that'll mean around £45-£55 outlay and I've upgraded the dodgy console to a newer stable one, replaced the old controller with a new one, and picked up Forza Horizon 3. That'll do me nicely.

Frustratingly, the bundle I got yesterday at game is note available at Currys but with an extra game thrown in and a tenner knocked off the price.
Ah well. Cest la vie. (Doubt Currys would've let me trade in my old console, so it's probably not much different in the long run)

Most played games:
Puzzle Quest 2 - lol
Bully
Ghost Recon Wildlands

588 achievements
748 hours played, ouch

MOST PLAYED GAMES
THE WITCHER 3
TITANFALL® 2
DISHONORED 2
FORZA HORIZON 3
MINECRAFT: XBOX ONE EDITION

Damn, I'm all about the sequels!

378 achievements
832 hours played

You can tell it's a bit behind as it says I've got about 97k gamerscore, but I finally passed 100k yesterday 😎
("Refunct" is about £2, fun/relaxing and you'll have 800-1000 GS in less than an hour, which tipped me over the 100k mark).

Congrats fella, feels good to get over the first 100k - I purposely stayed on 100k for about 2 weeks lol.. long old slog to get to 200k though - not too long for me to go.

I take it the "hours played" only takes into account the amount of time the xbox has been on - well that's my excuse to spending a whole month (from 10 months) playing xbox lol.

Oculus are adding an hours played feature to Oculus Home soon so I'll find out how much time I've spent in VR since I got my Rift on 21st October. It's not going to be pretty lol :-\ ;D

Guess again.
I think my Xbox is on about 18-20 hours a day, on average, and my profile is auto-logged in - so it'd be around 6,000-7,000 hours if it counted all the time it's turned on.

Great to see Kodi officially available on the xb1, from today.
It's an alpha build and still needs some work, but it's there and it apparently works.

I've had a quick play around with it and of the three add-ons I tried only one of them worked (Cerebro worked, but Neptune and Covenant didn't). I found and pressed play on a couple of films and they seemed to be working right but I haven't tried actually watching one in full to check stability.

Loads of decent deals on at the moment..  just bought 4 games for about £40 all in:
Dead Island : Riptide, Prison Architect, Diablo 3 and Forza 7.

Also saw that Duke Nukem 3D Anniversary was reduced to about a fiver - I must of bought that game on 3 or 4 different consoles already - do I really want to play it again?  Well, it is fucking awesome.. and there is an extra episode... so I might have that by tonight lol.

Edit:
Just bought Duke Nukem, Deus Ex Mankind Divided and Walking Dead Season 3 for £22ish - must stop looking at this sale now lol.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: jman on January 18, 2018, 01:07:52 PM
Out of the ones I bought so far:

Forza 7 - same old Forza as always - great for a while, then gets a bit boring - then gets mind-numbingly boring.  Theres about a million cars to unlock - and that's no lie.
Prison Architect - seems too fiddly for a console game - I did think that when I bought it - played it for a bit and wasn't too impressed.
Duke Nukem 3D Anniversary - already 100%'ed it.. glad I bought it actually, loved playing through it again and the new chapter was pretty good
Walking Dead Season 3 - already 100%'ed it.. probably the weakest season of the 3 though.. just thought the storyline was a bit pants, being a zombie game, they didn't seem to feature too much.
Diablo 3 - I've never played a Diablo game before - I started a co-op game with a buddy who is in the same boat - we both really enjoyed geeking out to the Warcraft-esque feel - looking forward to playing some more.

Oh.. and I noticed Zombi is available to download on GWG this month.. haha.. now I can see how shit this seminal Wii game is that harv was banging on about for ages lol.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: harv on January 18, 2018, 04:27:54 PM
Well for starters you're not going to get the same amount of stress and tension playing the game without a screen on your controller. And if that wasn't enough to spoil the game as a survival horror game Ubisoft decided to patch the difficulty out of the game 6 months after it launched on the Wii U.

It WAS a great game but Ubisoft ruined it.

VR horror games aside, ZombiU was the scariest survival horror game that I'd played for YEARS. Particularly when you played it with crosshairs and aim assist turned off. The nursery scene in particular was VERY intense.

Hit 200k GS today.. kinda fucked it up and actually landed on 200040 just to annoy my OCD.. got it finishing JumpJet Rex (didn't realise it would unlock 3 achievements at the same time) - the last level is fucking tough (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXq7983Kpfw).. so maybe the final achievement wasn't as worthy as my 100k achievement (100%ing Lost Odyssey - 50 hours to get one poxy achievement).. but I still had to work for it!

I think I'm addicted to Skyrim VR and VR Porn...especially the latter lol :o ;D ;D ;D

I went scorched earth on my system drive on my PC a few weeks ago which fucked up my mods for Skyrim VR somehow and these last couple of days I've been downloading and installing mods in between matches and at night after the matches have finished.

Now I've finished them and I'm itching to play the game. Someone on the Skyrim VR sub-Reddit did an eye candy mod guide so I've been following that. It looks a lot better than my previous mod list I think, particularly where the lighting and fires are concerned.

It's a shame that Microsoft aren't having a VR option for the Xbox One X because playing Skyrim in VR, even if you've put hundreds of hours into the vanilla game, really is amazing. You'll see little things that you completely missed whilst playing it flat (AKA Flatrim to some lol) and spellcasting, archery and to a lesser extent melee combat are amazing to do in game.

And even without mods seeing some of these views from INSIDE the game is literally jaw dropping at times...but with 4K textures things are on a completely different level altogether.

Yeah I played it 7 years ago.. Good for you, your playing a really old game.  How many current triple A titles are available in VR, could probably count on one hand.  VR hasn't taken to the mainstream,  I think that's evident.. The fact it was pretty non-existent at E3 should be enough to know that there's gonna be sod all incoming too.

Yes, it's an old game. But like I said people that have played the game to death on other platforms are still enjoying the game in VR. There's no adrenaline rush in Flatrim like there is in Skyrim VR because playing it in VR is on a completely different level altogether. I just got attacked by bandits earlier and it was a real rush.

And of course VR hasn't gone mainstream. That's probably going to take another 5-10 years. As for AAA quality games there are plenty:

Elite Dangerous
Skyrim VR
Fallout 4 VR
Project CARS
Project CARS 2
Assetto Corsa
DiRT Rally VR
Lucky's Tale
Chronos
Edge Of Nowhere
The Climb
Robinson: The Journey
Wilson's Heart
From Other Suns
SuperHOT VR
The Mage's Tale
Arktika.1
Dead & Buried
Robo Recall
Obduction

That's 20 off the top of my head - and don't include PSVR games - if they're not all AAA quality games they're not far off. And these are all first generation games too.

In 5-10 years time when VR goes mainstream and you have a VR headset in your home you'll finally understand what all the fuss I've been making is all about. Particularly when it comes to horror games lol :o :P

It's going to take some time but VR headsets will be similar to tellies and DVD/Blu-Ray players - every home will have one. 8)
Title: Re: Xbox One

lol keep dreaming.. you've listed about 2-3 AAA games there... and nothing current either - you've also listed a plethora of games that got slated for their shitty VR experience - Robo Recall, Wilson's Heart, Edge of Nowhere and Robinson: The Journey to name a few.  Your opnion on "great" games is ridiculous anyway - the guy who claimed that ZombiU was a console seller - I couldn't bear playing the campaign for more than 5 minutes it was so bad LOL.

I won't be buying a VR headset in the forseable future - you'll be going back to normal gaming when the support for VR games dries up, just like you moved on when you finally realised the WiiU was a pile of wank ;)

Anyway, if you are into your Skryim - you should google Malukah - she has a cracking version of The Dragonborn song - it still pops up from time-to-time when playing my mixes - I must have listened to it a LOT lol.  She has a few Skryim songs but nothing as good as Dragonborn.
Title: Re: Xbox One

Nope. The only reasons why consumer VR didn't take off in the 80s and 90s were because the technology wasn't there to make it good enough quality and because it was WAY too expensive for people to buy.

VR isn't going anywhere.

And with standalone headsets like the Oculus Go and soon to be Santa Cruz you don't even need a powerful PC to make it possible.

Trust me, when you get a headset and play games in VR in 5-10 years you'll completely understand how awesome it is, and maybe by that time you'll have 16K per eye headsets with over a 200 degree FOV so that it's going to be VERY difficult to tell the difference between VR and real life.

The only downsides to this first generation of VR are the low resolution and 110 degrees FOV, there's plenty of SDE (Screen Door Effect) and it looks like you're seeing everything with ski goggles on but Oculus will be releasing their second generation high-end PC VR headset next year with a 140 degree FOV and what's likely to be 4K displays per eye with eye tracking and dynamic foveated rendering.

After experiencing games in VR I can't go back to playing games flat. There's a huge difference.
Title: Re: Xbox One

Can't see me bothering with vr or ar until we get it in contact lenses or some sort of implant. Can't be doing with wearing those silly headsets, just to play old games which aren't really designed to be played on vr.

Don't bother arguing the point or telling me how awesome it is. My opinion won't be swayed by anything you say.

Besides, your best argument seems to usually be the porn, which is fitting - vr at present is mainly for wankers.
Title: Re: Xbox One
Post by: harv on June 21, 2018, 10:42:56 PM
Well I'd say it's more VR Porn, simulators and horror games. Once you experience those three different things in VR going back to doing the same things flat is such a poor experience in comparison. ;D

But, again, this is something you have to actually experience rather than taking someone's word for it on an internet forum.

This generation is just the beginning, things will get MUCH better in 5-10 years. And you say that you're not interested in strapping a couple of displays to your face NOW, but once Microsoft get their VR arses in gear in 5-10 years time you'll end up looking like this with the rest of us:

Funnily enough, Microsoft have said in the last day that it won't have specific VR/AR/Mixed Reality support in the Xbox ecosystem because its a better fit on the PC.  Enjoy your decade old games though harv - if you refuse to play "flat games" - then you're missing out on more than I am.  I've experienced VR and it sucked, headaches, nausea and motion sickness - not what I want 5 minutes after booting up a game.

Plus VR is no doubt - bad for your eyes.. what did your mum always say.. sit too close to the tv and your eyes will go square... you already wear glasses harv (although that's probably down to Late's well spotted observation that you are a habitual wanker) - be interested to know when you next go to the optician how bad your eyes have got since last time ;)
