Title: Champions League Last 16 (2017-2018)
Post by: jman on December 11, 2017, 11:13:24 AM
Juventus vs Spurs
FC Basel vs Man City
Porto vs Liverpool
Sevilla vs Man Utd
Real Madrid vs PSG
Shakhtar Donetsk vs Roma
Chelsea vs Barcelona
Bayern Munich vs Besiktas

So United had the easiest group and arguably one of the easiest last 16 tie... and Jose moans about City having the gods of football behind them ;D
Real Madrid vs PSG puts one of the big hitters out - you could see an English side lifting the trophy this year (probably not Chelsea) lol.

At last City get a reasonable draw.
At least Maureen can pick up some more lemons from Spain.
Five English teams in the Quarters.

Decent result for Chelsea last night but that away goal might cost them.

Team news for United:

De Gea

Valencia Lindelof Smalling Young

Herrera Matic McTominay

Mata Lukaku Sanchez

Pogba on the bench  :o

A TERRIBLE first half from United. De Gea has made a couple of world class saves and United go in level at half-time.

Herrera came off injured after 16 minutes with Pogba coming on to replace him.

Lukaku is a threat that the 2 Sevilla centre backs are struggling to deal with but Sevilla have been the better side during that first half by a mile. They've had 6 times more shots on goal than United and 5 times more on target. :'(

Meh. Typical Maureen game there. Bus parked. 0-0 at full time.  >:(

Hardly a bus parked when Sevilla were only denied winning the game from some poor finishing and some good saves from de gay.  You see Liverpool smash Porto 5-0 away from home and then you get that from United, I'd be embarrassed by that display, Sevilla are 5th in la liga,  that's the equivalent of a championship side over here, their best player is Navas lol.
Title: Re: Champions League Last 16 (2017-2018)
Post by: harv on February 22, 2018, 11:03:55 AM
Most of their 25 attempts on goal were from outside the area. We parked that bus pretty well for the vast majority of the game. The last 5 minutes of the first half was the only time that Sevilla really threatened to score.

Way too negative from United so far. 0-0 at halftime and we've only had 1 shot on target. We've got the players up front to carve them open at will but apart from doing that once or twice we're just sitting there and inviting them on.

We need to up the pace for the second half otherwise we're going to get caught out.

TERRIBLE performance from United. 0-2 down with 11 minutes to go. This has been an embarrassment.

Lukaku has got 1 back but too little too late I think.

And that's it. Game over. Maureen and the players need to hang their heads in shame. United should have played attacking football and gone at them right from the start of the first half. We needed goals ffs. >:(

Sevilla deservedly through, no easy games in the last 16, especially when you attempt to play with 10 men behind the ball for 180 minutes
Title: Re: Champions League Last 16 (2017-2018)
Post by: harv on March 13, 2018, 10:16:59 PM
Yup. It's REALLY annoying because we have the players there to cause any team on the planet defensive problems. Personally I think United need to switch back to playing 4-4-2 at home:

De Gea

Valencia Bailly Smalling Young

Lingard Matic Fellaini Rashford

Sanchez Lukaku

Would have been a much better idea than playing 4-5-1 with 2 defensive midfielders. Have Lukaku or Sanchez dropping deep when losing possession.

I hate playing 4-5-1 at home. :'(

This could be the beginning of the end for Mourinho at United.. we all know what happens in his 3rd season ;D - this could well be the catalyst judging by people's reactions to the game last night and some of his post-match comments..

Quote
“I sat in this chair with Porto - Man Utd out. I sat in this chair with Real Madrid - Man Utd out. It's not something new for this club."

;D ;D ;D

Yep as I predicted, Mourinho has started his melt-down and did his best impression of Rafa's FACT rant ;D ;D ;D  By his words, you don't understand what football 'eritage is harv lolol.  Maybe someone should remind him that Chelsea didn't have an 'eritage when he joined the first time around.. so whats different - you've spent over £300m in two seasons.. anyone falling for this old claptrap needs their head seeing too... he's being paid to deliver results and trophies.. not to be slightly better than Moyes and Looney.

Well he's done pretty good with trophies so far, we won two last season :P

It does look like cracks in his sanity are appearing though lol :o ;D ;D ;D

United have to be favourites to win the FA Cup but tonight's match isn't a foregone conclusion by any means. Our League Cup exit is proof of that :-[

A cracking goal from Bale. Overhead kick. He'd be one of the world's best players if he could stay fit for more than 5 minutes. 2-1 to Real Madras. 65 minutes gone.

Fucking hell, another howler from their keeper gives Bale his second goal. 3-1 and that has to be game over now. Two minutes to go plus Injury Time.

I couldn't be arsed to start a new thread so I thought I'd bump this one instead.

Team news for United:

De Gea

Young Bailly Lindelof Shaw

Herrera Matic Pogba

Lingard Rashford Martial

Bench: Romero, Jones, Dalot, Fred, Mata, Sanchez, Lukaku

PSG are missing Cavani and Neymar which might do us a few favours.

3 bookings for each side now, and one of their players, Kimpembe, should have had three yellow cards by now. This ref is pretty useless. He's throwing the cards around like a nut case but only if a player hasn't been booked yet.

A bad night for United. Martial and Lingard injured and Pogba sent off. The best team won but the ref was useless. That has to be us out now, I can't see us winning by two goals at their house. :'(

De Gea, Young, Bailly, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw, McTominay, Fred, Pereira, Rashford, Lukaku

Looks like 3-5-2 for United.

We need to score and we need to score first. If we're one goal ahead in the second half then there'll be more than a few French bums twitching.

Getting through after giving away two away goals a few weeks ago is a big ask, but the old United appears to be back so there's a chance they can do it.

That's 1-2 (3-2 agg) at half-time. This could still go either way but the longer it goes without another goal the more those French bums will be twitching!!!

A big match that most people would write us off for, but we've beaten Juventus and PSG away so even if we lose tonight there's a chance of us going through unless we get hammered. Getting beat by more than 2 goals will be too much of an ask though I think.

And thanks to other sides cocking up we're still in the race for a top four place.

United 0-1 down at halftime but it's been a good performance. They've had LOADS of possession but haven't done much with it so far. 3 attempts on goal and only 1 on target. We've had 5 attempts on goal but none on target.
Title: Re: Champions League Last 16 (2017-2018)

0-1 final score in the end and a great performance. We were only let down by poor finishing, 10 attempts on goal and none on target. De Gea didn't have a great deal to do, they had 6 attempts on goal and 3 on target.

I can see us scoring over there in the away leg though, not sure if we'll end up winning over there though...but then I thought the same thing about PSG so there's still hope we can go through.

Because we were playing decent football and had the Barcelona defence filling their trousers at times. If we had better finishing we would have won the match, Messi was kept pretty quiet too. If we play the same way over there but improve our finishing then we'll end up knocking them out.

We certainly weren't playing like a side that's 21 points away from first place in the Premiership table, although to be fair to United we're only 21 points away from the top because Maureen is a useless twat.

Haven't you lost 4 out of your last 5 under Solskjaer, been knocked out the FA cup, slipped back down to 6th and pretty much been knocked out of the champions league?

I'd have Mourinho back in a heartbeat - most decorated manager of the modern era ;)
Title: Re: Champions League Last 16 (2017-2018)
Post by: harv on April 12, 2019, 05:08:06 PM
Yup, we've had a bad run but we're still in with a shout for 3rd place. Before Ollie took over we were in 6th place, 11 points behind 4th place and with a Goal Difference of -1. According to Maureen it would take 'a miracle' to get us to 4th place.

Even if we don't make it into the top 4 I'm just happy to see United playing like United again. The Barcelona defenders were filling their trousers for most of that second half.

3-0 final score, at least this leg wasn't a routine, although ig did come close. Not enough attempts on target again, only 3. Barcelona had twice that. :'(

The problem that Ollie has is getting rid of the dead wood from the squad. Wholesale changes to a squad need to be done in stages. Matic, Valencia, Lukaku, Sanchez, Mata, Darmian, Rojo and Bailly all need to go, and that's being generous.

Luckily we have Chong, Greenwood, Gomes and Garner coming through which should save us a few quid going forward but we need to spend a good few quid ON THE RIGHT PLAYERS before we can challenge for the Champions League again.
