Title: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 03, 2018, 03:26:35 PM
Thought it was time we had one of these.

Who do you think is going to win?

England of course, you crazy fools. :o 8)

Paddy Power have the Argies at 10/1 and Portugal at 22/1, might be worth a couple of each-way bets I reckon.

Unfuckingbelievable.

The joint US, Canada and Mexico bid for the 2026 World Cup has won. Despite Mexico hosting in 1986 and the US hosting in 1994. And Canada is hardly known as a footballing nation either. That would be 60 years since England hosted the competition.

What the FUCK do we have to do to host the fucking thing again?!!?!!?

Fucking wankers. :o >:( :o

We didn't bid for the 2026 World Cup though.. and I think the 2030 world cup will go to Uruguay as it will be the 100th anniversary... 2034 here we come - although I do believe it should be a joint nation bid (Scotland/Ireland/Wales/England) - that would be fantastic.

I think the US/Canada/Mexico WC is good though - better than Morocco.. although the time difference will be a killer for the late games...

I've gone for the Argies at 10/1 this WC.. I think Messi has to win it.. although a South American team winning it in europe has only happened once so maybe not.  Also got them to reach the semi's at 5/2

The Argies have no hope of winning the thing cos I bunged a £5 e/w bet on them myself. Sorry about that lol :P

And the only hope we have of hosting the 2034 World Cup will be if the English FA sell Wembley to raise enough money for a few bangs. Worked for Russia and Qatar  :P
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: jman on June 15, 2018, 09:05:24 AM
As long as they make the semi's I don't care if the Argies win it or not.

The opening cermoney yesterday was probably one of the worst I've ever seen.. it was fucking awful and only lasted about 10 minutes, that brunette bint was the only good thing about it, but even she was miming.  The game wasn't much better despite it finishing 5-0... had some comical defending from the Saudis.

Apparently England are going to be preparing a joint nations bid for the 2030 World Cup - I can't see it beating the Argentina/Uruguay/Paraguay joint bid though.. be better off going for the 2034 tournament in honesty.

I'm just surprised that Qatar have kept their hosting of 2022 tbh. It doesn't take much intelligence to know that the decision was as dodgy as fuck.

We'll never get another World Cup imo. FIFA won't have any of it. They hate us. Not even if we get the other home nations with us in a joint bid. Not going to happen.

Uruguay have just gone 1-0 up. You've got to feel for Egypt though, looks like Ramadan has taken its toll on the players in these last 25 minutes or so. They've looked pretty knackered. :(
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 15, 2018, 05:58:19 PM
Fucking hell, Iran have just gone 1-0 up through an own goal. If they can pull this off that will be their second World Cup win in history  :o

And that's it! They've just won!!!

Ronnie puts Portugal 1-0 up from the spot.

Spain might end up getting hammered here if they let their heads drop. I can't imagine that morale would have been great before the start of the match given what's gone on this week.

Looks like have settled down now, getting a good amount of possession.

Costa gets an equaliser :o
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread

A rare howler from De Gea and Ronnie puts Portugal 2-1 up just before half-time. Spain had just been the dominant side for a while too with Isco causing them all sorts of problems.

And that's half-time  :o
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread

Costa goal was amazing, so was David de Karius attempting to save a shot ;D

Fucking Sterling being interviewed. He shouldn't be in the squad imo.

Now another equaliser.

Ronnie 2 - 2 Costa lol  ;D

This is why conte should be sacked, letting Costa go... Such quality, he's a magnificent bastard who you'd dread playing against

Meh. I don't care how good he is, he's a disgrace to football. Should be muzzled like a fucking dog.

And Ronnie gets the equaliser  :o ;D

Great free kick too.

What a fantastic game!!! Ronnie is the best player in the world, no doubt in my mind about that. Forget about Messi.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: jman on June 15, 2018, 09:30:44 PM
He scored two from set-plays and gifted a goal, hardly say that he was that outstanding, was a great free-kick though.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 15, 2018, 11:49:59 PM
Nah...best player in da world. That clown Messi plays Sunday League football in comparison innit :P

I put my money on Argentina and Portugal to win the thing though, a reasonable couple of bets considering the odds on those sides (10/1 and 22/1 respectively if I'm remembering correctly) and the fact that those two sides have the two best players in the world playing for them.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 16, 2018, 11:51:34 AM
Omfg, France 0 - 0 Australia at half-time  :o

The first 5 minutes the Frogs had 3 shots on goal and all of them on target and I thought that the Aussies would get hammered but after that first 15 minutes or so the Frogs basically went backwards and the Aussies grew into the game.

I'll piss myself laughing if they end up losing this game :o ;D
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 16, 2018, 01:06:44 PM
Aw, they ended up winning 2-1 :(

Pogba got them out of jail with the winning goal after 81 minutes but the Aussies deserved a point out of that I think.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread

Aguero puts the Argies 1-0 up, a fantastic finish too.

TERRIBLE penalty from Messi earlier. Told ya he's a Sunday League quality player. They should have had another one not so long ago too.

1-1. I'd just like to wholeheartedly apologise for putting the Harv Kiss Of Death on Argentina. They probably won't make it out of the group stage now I've got money on the fuckers!!! :o :'( ;D

Peru vs Denmark is a great game so far. Poulsen has just put the Danes 1-0 up and Schmeichel has just pulled off a good save to prevent the equaliser a few minutes later.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 16, 2018, 06:58:35 PM
Another great match, it ended with Denmark winning 1-0 but you've got to feel for the Peruvians there because they deserved something from that game with the effort they put in.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread

Croatia are 1-0 up at half-time due to an own goal. Probably the worst match of the competition so far.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 16, 2018, 10:32:14 PM
It finished with Croatia winning 2-0 but was painful to watch sometimes. Terrible match. >:(

I missed the first half of Costa Rica vs Serbia but the second half has started and Kolarov has scored an amazing goal from a free kick to put Serbia 1-0 up. ;D
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread

Bloody hell, Germany vs Mexico looks like it's going to be a fantastic game so far. 3 minutes gone and both sides have had a chance on goal. :o
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 17, 2018, 04:39:58 PM
Lozano puts Mexico 1-0 up. Mexico have JUST been the better side but it's been end to end stuff here.

There's plenty more goals in this game by the looks of it.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 17, 2018, 04:50:02 PM
1-0 to Mexico at half-time during a VERY entertaining first half. Mexico are looking so dangerous on the break and are looking reasonable at the back so far too. Potential dark horses, perhaps? :o
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 17, 2018, 05:51:56 PM
The Krauts had a much better second half but so many of their chances have been off target and not good enough to avoid a 1-0 defeat. Always good to see those fuckers lose lol 8)
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 17, 2018, 08:00:19 PM
Brazil 1-0 up against the Swiss. They're still in it but another goal in the second half will seal the three points I think.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 17, 2018, 08:19:09 PM
1-1 now. Brazil gifted the Swiss a free header. TERRIBLE defending.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 17, 2018, 09:31:31 PM
Ended up 1-1.

Germany, Spain, Brazil and Argentina have all failed to win their first game. :o

A win for England tomorrow and it's a nailed on CERTAINTY that England are gonna win the thing. 8) :P 8)
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: jman on June 17, 2018, 09:42:25 PM
Was good to see the Krauts losing today, Mexico should have had 3 or 4 though.. they were knackered by the 60th minute.. so it was all Germany at the end but great result for them.

So far, so good for my sweepstake at work - I pulled out Uruguay and Denmark lol - unlikely to win the thing, but get my money back if one of them tops their group.

Also got a fiver on a 51/1 shot on
Egypt, Denmark, Mexico, Switzerland, England, Poland, Croatia and Portugal all qualifying from their groups...

Not doing badly at the moment.. its looking OK but need Egypt to beat the Ruskis on Wednesday otherwise its probably fucked...Egypt and Poland were always my dodgy picks but I didn't expect Russia to nail the Saudis like they did.

I watched all the games this weekend aswell - have to say that the Beeb are so much better at this than ITV.. their pundits, anchors and commentators are just pure shit.

Don't get me wrong, Lawro and Murphy just talk absolute shite - I can't stand them, nor Phil Neville - just a whinier version of Gary - but the BBC team is far preferable than ITVs - this will probably come off sexist - I don't care, but why are they so many women pundits at a men's professional game - I can understand the likes of Jacqui Oatley, Gabby Logan - who have actually worked in the men's game for a while - but actually they sit in the anchor role - so not really pundits, they just keep the conversation going, but why female England internationals as pundits - OK they've played football for England.. but not for the men's teams.. completely different level - and they've never really had any punditry experience.. I just don't get it.. its not like women are going to see that and think ah ok, I WILL watch the football now there's a woman on the pundit team.

1-1 with England after Kane puts us ahead and then Walker gifts them a penalty. Bloody idiot.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 18, 2018, 08:13:34 PM
So much for VAR. That's two penalties we should have had now. Unbelievable.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 18, 2018, 08:55:43 PM
And that's what looks like the winner from Kane. They left it a bit late but to be fair to England we should have had two penalties too. Probably the worst refereeing performance so far I think.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: jman on June 19, 2018, 10:16:31 AM
VAR is ruining the world cup a little bit.. those rugby tackles on Kane were penalties any day of the week - they were apparently reviewed by the VAR team and the ref took the view that Kane dived.. I don't get it.  How can they not give a penalty for that, but give penalties like the France one or the Argentina one which were NOT clear and obvious penalties.  When you get a game like that where everyone including all pundits/press/media think that England should have had at minimum two penalties and they get none, VAR is clearly not working as it should.

Anyway.. despite that fact, still got that frustrating feeling watching England... we did play well for the first 20 minutes (probably not the best 20 minutes from any team like that twat Keown spouted out) ... but we weathered the rest of the game, especially after their equalizer which is a bit of worry.  Apparently Tunisia touched the ball 5 times in our penalty area the whole game (including the penalty) - we still conceded.

Thoughts on performances:
Lingard is not good enough.. no excuse for that tame 1st effort - I'd rather see Rashers or even Wellbeck play there.. and Wellbeck is Wellshite!
Not a big fan of Young, I think he's shit.. ok, he didn't do much wrong last night (although that FK was terrible) - but he didn't really do anything to be honest.
Thought Loftus-Cheek did well when he came on, 10 minutes wasn't really enough though.
I don't get why people thought Henderson had a good game.. he over-hit so many passes and surely lost possession more than anyone.. still, better than playing the ball backwards and sideways constantly I guess.
Unsure on Mcguire, ok he burst forward a few times.. a few times he just turned around and passed backwards though.
Glad Kane got on the scoresheet, to be honest, he was just in the right place at the right time.. but that's a good thing and now hopefully that gives him the confidence for future games.
Sterling should be shot for that miss though.. he's going to cost us at some point with his misses.
Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: harv on June 19, 2018, 01:58:59 PM
Sterling should NEVER be wearing an England shirt. He's nowhere near consistent enough for top level football. He'll have a game here or there where he's fantastic but then he'll have a few games where he'll have 15 or 20 minutes playing average football and the rest of the match he'll be complete shite and a few games where he's shite for the whole game.

Hopefully we'll see Rashford starting the next match in his place.

Yep.. maybe Argentina have done so badly because you tipped them then.. I can't believe how bad they have been so far - it was a crap game, both teams being dirty bastards, I do think Rebic should have been sent off.. but so should Otamendi for trying to kick the ball in Rakitic's face at point blank range... by Fergies standards.. "he could have killed him"!!

Looks like we've both lost our bets - fingers crossed Costa can bag a few more in the next game though - only bet left that has any chance of making me some moollah.

Title: Re: The World Cup 2018 Thread
Post by: jman on June 22, 2018, 12:00:38 PM
Also saw yesterday that we've had more penalties already in this World Cup than we had in all the group matches last World Cup.

No real surprise with VAR - some of the penalties given have been absolutely unbelievable though - the one against Denmark the other day was probably the worst - I can't fathom how that was a penalty.  The one against England, the France one in their first match.. theres about 5 or 6 that should never have been given in a million years.. even after a VAR review... its like.. oh VAR are looking at it.. the ref must be thinking oh I fucked up then... I must do exactly what the VAR is saying.. I think I've only seen one incident so far when the ref didn't award anything after a VAR review.

Sterling starting ahead of Rashford. Loftus-Cheek replacing the injured Alle.

I've absolutely no idea why Sterling gets selected and even less idea why Citeh decided to spend £50m on him. He'll have 45 or maybe 90 minutes where he's great but then a few games where he's average.

A brace for Stones makes it 4-0 from a nicely worked free kick.

Belgium now only have +2 on goal difference now. If the heat doesn't fuck us up in the second half we could get 7 or 8.

And just as I was posting this we've got a penalty. And that's Kane with number five lol ;D

Lets not gloss over the fact that we scraped the win against Tunisia, albeit there were some poor referee decisions.
Team did play well yesterday and deserved winners - however, concerned about how easily they scored at the end - Belgium is a much tougher test although both teams will probably rest players.
I wouldn't want to come up against Colombia after their game last night.. Japan or Senegal please!

Another joke penalty from VAR in the Iran game, even worse than the Australian penalty against Denmark, these debateable decisions are ruining the world cup

And it's quite ironic that this thing is supposed to STOP wrong decisions being made too.

I'm becoming quite convinced that money is changing hands here. It's the only logical reason for such awful decisions. I'm surprised that the press hasn't run with this yet tbh.

Messi puts Argentina 1-0 up against Nigeria. Croatia vs Iceland is still level. If this stays like this then Argentina are through to the next round and our bets are still alive!😎

Nigeria got one back but Rojo has just scored to put them 2-1 up! :o

So that's Germany out  ;D

Brazil and Switzerland through and Sweden and Mexico through.

Word has it that Lukaku is either not fit enough to play or will be rested for the match tomorrow. Doesn't matter if he plays, we're the best team in da world and we're not only gonna win tomorrow but we're also gonna win da World Cup  8)

Okay. So we didn't win tonight...

...but we're still gonna win da World Cup lol :-[ ;D ;D ;D

Columbia in the next round and an easier Quarter Final WHEN we beat them. 8)

Dunno why everyone is going on about the easier side of the draw, you'd still have to potentially face any of the teams on our side to reach the final, now we've got a tough game to even get to the quarters and Sweden so far have knocked out Holland in the qualifiers, Italy in the playoffs and Germany in the groups, so that's also a tough potential quarter.

England were shit tonight, Rashford deserves to be dropped after that selfish miss,  even Sterling would have passed or scored there

We'll beat EVERYONE once it comes to the knockout stages.

By the way, Rashford's selfishness during these last few months is down to Ronaldo, and Ronaldo's selfishness during his last few seasons at United was down to Fergie. Ronaldo wouldn't be the goal machine that he is now without Fergie having bets worth tens of thousands of pounds with Ronaldo that he couldn't score more than X goals every season with X getting bigger every year.

This is an important part of Rashford's development that Ronnie is contributing to. Plenty of people were slagging off Ronnie years ago for his selfishness too in the beginning...and the rest is history 8)

A daft penalty given away by Rojo and Griezmann puts France 1-0 up from the spot. That's 4 out of 4 penalties he's scored now.

Plenty of time to go but Argentina need to respond well.

Well that's France through to the Semis after they've beat Uruguay 2-0. Always good to see those dirty bastards getting knocked out of a competition. They're an absolute disgrace to football and always have been.

Brazil vs Belgium next tonight.

I don't care who wins these matches tbh cos NOBODY is going to beat us. We're gonna win da World Cup. 8) ;D 8)

Out of the two I'd probably rather play Croatia. They've been beyond shite so far during this competition. Russia's home advantage could cause us a few problems.

Well I got my wish!

France vs Belgium on Tuesday at 7pm
England vs Croatia on Wednesday at 7pm

That first Semi is going to be a close one but England SHOULD beat Croatia without too much of a problem I think. 8)
