I decided to take a trip down Memory Lane and download the songs that a Punk band I was in recorded 17 or 18 years ago. They're available to listen to here (http://www.mf-enterprizes.com/My%20Recordings%20mp3.html) if you want to have a listen. We were bloody terrible lol. A few half-decent songs though including Where The Fields Are Green, Harvey's Song (lol), I Lay You To Rest and our finale, Take Me To Your Leader.
I wore a French Maid's outfit on stage (I was drunk when I agreed to it in front of witnesses) and the singer, Spark, changed into a wedding dress before we started playing I Lay You To Rest about halfway through the gig lololol.
First gig was on 20th May 1995 in front of 128 people and after that we averaged 70-80 until I quit the band because the other band members weren't too interested in doing gigs. We only did half a dozen as far as I remember.

Went out and bought all his albums on import from Australia after the festival and have bought every one since.
He's a decent human being too.
Laat saw them at the Southampton Guildhall last year (July 2011). The new band members he has put together are even better in my opinion (he likes to change the bassist and drummer every so often to freshen things up).

Been back for a little while from Hard Rock Calling, watching Springsteen and a few other bands.
Jack Savoretti and a couple of others on one of the smaller stages were pretty good. John Fogerty was pretty good but the highlight of his set was when Springsteen came on at the end and sang Rocking All Over the World with Fogerty.
Then it was Springsteen's turn. As usual, bloody excellent. If you've never seen him live you really need to before he stops performing. The E-street band are superb musicians and with Steve Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren both in the band they are even better. Clarence Clemons nephew has taken over from the big man on sax and was damned good as well.
Bruce definitely doesn't play because he needs the money or help in selling records. He plays because he loves it, as do the likes of Van Zandt. 3 hrs and 10 minutes on stage and he only stopped because the miserable toads turned the speakers off to stop him carrying on, which was a bloody disgrace considering he was just finishing his second song with Paul McCartney, who had been brought on as a special guest (which was pretty damned awesome in itself), what a version of Twist and Shout that was. That menat no encore and no tribute to Clarence Clemons. Totally disrespectful to Springsteen and McCartney to do what they did in the manner they did it.
Apparently there was a 10:30 curfew on a Saturday night because it upsets the residents in the area. Well I hope that the organisers take Hard Rock Calling elsewhere and tell Kensington Borough where to poke it. The festival brings in enough revenue for them.
I think Sir Paul should have a word with Queeny and tell her that the Royal Borough of Kensington should have the Royal taken away from it. There were a lot of people made happy by the music, made very unhappy at the end by the organisers.

Swent and saw Seether at the Electric Ballroom in Camden last night. Great gig once they sorted out the sound levels on the vocals, which took them about 5 or 6 songs and was really annoying. Great live band though.
Support were an old school heavy metal band called Heaven's Basement and they were very good live. Excellent guitarist and the vocalist was superb.

I personally quite like that but then I have very eclectic musical tastes.
Got my ticket to see Springsteen again at Wembley next year. Waiting to see who's on at Hard Rock calling as well.
Springsteen concert clashes with the IoW festival this year, but they are selling day tickets again, rather than just whole weekend tickets, so may get a ticket for Sunday at the IoW.

Funnily enough I've always thought that Vai was the better guitar player but where it really counts - songwriting - Satriani is streets ahead.
Still, you're not going to find a better songwriter or guitarist than Frank Zappa was. Probably the most underrated guitarist out there, and I'm still convinced he was killed by the US secret services due to his communist links - he was the Minister of Culture for Cuba :o Mercury in his drinking water in the 80s, that's all it will take to kill someone from prostate cancer in the 90s.

Make that the second best pedal ever made (http://www.ehx.com/products/hog2), the HOG 2 basically turns your guitar into a synth lol. Keyboard sounds, cello sounds and best of all violin sounds. Fucking amazing but it's waaaay out of my league in terms of finances...it's about 300 quid :o
I've been thinking of buying a DIY violin kit because I've always wanted to play one so will probably do that because it's going to be a great deal cheaper than a HOG 2 lol.

I had the good fortune to see The Jam live 3 times, between 77 and 82. All the gigs were great, but the first as it was my first gig, was so special. It was at Bracknell Leisure Centre, I was 14 really naive, and wore my black school blazer (without the badge which had been ripped off on the train to Bracknell), white shirt and a black shoe lace tie, thought I looked the dogs bollocks, but probably just Bollocks. ;D
I can't say i meet Paul Weller, Rick or Bruce.................. but it was the kind of gig, that as I was waiting for a lift home with my mate in the car park, the band and a few roadies were loading their gear into a van. :o

Saw them live 6 times in total, including their last ever official gig at the Brighton centre, though people I've spoken to since said they played a smaller intimate gig after that but I've found no record of it.
I met the band once at Portsmouth Guildhall and got their autographs. 1981 I think (it was the year Funeral Pyre was released - how nice it was when bands could release stand alone singles without them being leaders for an album).
Jam gigs were great because, if the venue allowed it, if you got there early enough and queued, they'd let those people who were there really early in to watch the sound check. So you'd end up with a mini concert of three or four songs and they'd chat to fans and sign autographs. Bruce Foxton told me how pissed off they were that Funeral Pyre didn't make number one - it really is a brilliant track. Weller is probably responsible for me being the bane of many a future bosses' life (not to mention my teachers for the following year) because he told a slightly impressionable and very stubborn 15 year old never to take any shit from anyone.
After that gig I had bruises on my chest and stomach from being crushed against the barrier in front of ther mosh pit at the front for the whole gig but at the end of it Weller handed me his plectrum. I was one very awestruck 15 year old kid lol.

My Mum had all of the Beatles' autographs on one piece of paper donkey's years ago but cut them up and sold them when our family needed money. She kept Paul McCartney and John Lennon though. The things parents do to feed their kids :o :-\ :o
Bet she's wished she let me and my brother starve since then lol :P ;D :P
I've paid some of that back a little though because I wrote to David Beckham in 1998 asking him to send my Mum an autograph and he sent her a proper signed photo. Was expecting a print at best, that's why I won't have a word said against him. ;D

Just sorted out my nut on one of my guitars. Filed it down a bit too much though so it falls out of the guitar without the strings there to keep it in place but have just restrung my guitar and it plays fine. Just need to sort out my intonation tomorrow and I'll be good to start work on writing my Space Rock Opera based on Stephen Donaldson's Gap novels 8)
Still need to sort out the whammy bar though but it's not a big priority for me tbh.

I don't know why, but recently I have been listening to lots of 80's bands...........King, Go West, Joe Jackson, Dexys, Fine Young Canniballs etc etc and Howard Jones....A few possibly could be classed as boy bands or manufactured, but at least the fuckers could play instruments and write good songs.

Haven't played for a while because I haven't been feeling up to it. A bit weird, you would have thought that depression would have some sort of benefit when playing the Blues but when I'm feeling bad I can't go anywhere near my guitar :(
Have had a bad few weeks but feeling pretty good for the first time in ages so I've joined in the weekly Session Mode thread that's begun last Monday. They choose a different band, a different scale and a different key to play with and upload their stuff to either Soundcloud or YouTube.
This week it's the Modern Blues band, E Major and the Blues scale.
There's supposedto be a limit of 5 minutes but mine is 10m minutes long lol :-[ ;D
I'll post a link when it's uploaded. I'm pretty sure I've ripped off the hook that the song starts off with and that continues through the jam but no idea where from. :-[ :o ;D

I'm pretty sure I've ripped off that hook from somewhere but I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out, warts and all. It was just my second attempt (the first one I didn't press F9 to start the recording lol) too.
I got that custom tone from Parisienne Walkways from a cDLC song. I really love the sound of it and I think I'll be using it a lot.
Near enough a month has passed between that video on the previous page and this one and I'm a lot happier with this one. Still loads of cock ups but overall it sounds pretty reasonable I think.

Was watching a few Zappa interviews on YouTube the other week as it goes. He was a musical genius, I'd go as far as to say he was the Beethoven or Mozart of our time.
My favourite albums are Joe's Garage Acts I, II and III, Over Nite Sensation and Hot Rats. Brilliant stuff. 8)

A challenge for the handful that actually like music, a wee mini concert broadcast in 1976 on a Saturday evening in simulcast with the radio in stereo. This was a very big deal for the time.
The artist they picked to push this experiment was a no brainer really, but the performance was exceptional.

Kinda makes me sad when I consider that there aren't any new, young, popular guitarists producing records anymore. I'd be quite happy to see a reality TV programme like X-Factor come out, but just for artists playing original material using real instruments. No drum machines, no (c)rap, no dancey dancey bollocks. Just proper musicians playing proper instruments and spanning different genres like rock, metal, blues, jazz, funk, proper R&B, proper soul, classical etc etc.
I'm hoping that in the next 5 years or so stuff like Rocksmith is going to encourage kids to play the guitar again...but I won't hold my breath. :'(

Have been messing around with Band In A Box which is a really nice piece of kit! You can listen to my first song I've finished writing using it, a Texas Blues number called Autumn Breeze (https://soundcloud.com/arv1971/autumn-breeze). Done it as a jam track really but at some pint I may add some lyrics. 8)

I did start off writing Manhattan a while back but have just finished it off. A jazz/funk number, both are pretty laid back. 8) 8) 8) :)
