and if i was Deca i would have got the Japanese government to pass resolution naming their country Cuba  !   ( just like the Oireachtas  named their country" Republic of Ireland"  in  1948.  :P :) :) )

France's proper name is the  French Republic  but we rarely call it that.

which is interesting because w e always call  the Czech Republic, the Czech Republic  but I have friends from there who tell me off and say its called  "Czech".    Just like France i suppose.

Interesting. So there is a difference between its legal name and its constitutional name !  I've always admired the irish ability to negotiate well. The politician's ability to take a word and point out that in precise interpretation it means something different to what you thought and therefore you are wrong  is always impressive.

Is there any reason why the use of the term Irish Republic is not liked  ( other than association with soccer) ?  I had no idea before this.  Personally I would prefer Republic as it signifies freedom and democracy to me as opposed to a kingdom ruled by a monarch.

I don't think anyone dislikes the term Irish Republic or Republic of Ireland but neither are the correct name for our country. I live in Ireland, my address is in Ireland, my passport says Eire and Ireland on it.

The only place you ever see the country being called anything other than Ireland is with those idiots who run soccer in our country. The state of our national team and the league of Ireland demonstrate just how good they are at their job. Yet another club couldn't pay their players wages this week. The CEO of the FAI earns more in a year than the winners of the league of Ireland get which probably is all you need to know.
